I don't know why but have been listening to a lot of dead from the middle to late 80s lately and I'm sure as well glad that I am. It's almost like a switch got turned on, and the boys would come on night after night and just give it their all. The music was rocking as all hell and going back and listening to it just makes it all the more fun to hear these crazy shows.
I mean don't get me wrong, in my opinion 72 to 79 dead will always hold a special place in my heart, but in the mid eighties it's like the boys got sock of being mellow, and they just crancked the fuck up and the jammed the hell out. I came name many shows where I notice this (3/31/87, 9/8/87), just to name a few, and the summer tour of 88 just kicked ass. In some says I miss the mellow, rocking jams of the 70s but I still love the rocking as hell jams of the 80s. Anyone else got any opinions on this?
I wasn't going to post another posting tonight, but I'm jamming out to 9/7/87 Provodence, RI right now and this just kind of hit me. And surprising so it seems like Brent had a lot to do with this. I have heard from many sources that Jerry was kind of a control freak and he would decide what they would play. It seems like Brent would sometimes take things further and jam them the fuck out. I remember being at the Providence shows in 1987 and thinking every night how much the boys were rocking out. You can even notice it in certain songs. Jack Straw is one example where they started to play it faster and more rocking. Even the Help, Slipknot, Franklins from the warlocks show in 1989 was crazier and more Rockin. I can't remember which show it was bit it was one of the Sullivan stadium shows in MA from 89 wherenif you listen to friend of the devil you can tell that they picked up the pace and it wasn't played as slow as usual (thank god, since I never got into the slw FTOD).
Anyhow, this is just an observation that I noticed and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
Keep Calm and Chive On!!!!!

Hey bud - nice energy! When you speak of Providence '87, 9/9/87 jumps to mind - the final night of the run. Definitely one of my favorite shows of the year, and one of Brent's better performances. Thanks man. _________________ Even the blind man knows when the rain is falling. |

High energy 80s...
Well, try out 3/9/85 and definitely 9/15/85 (check out the 2nd set pre-drums and tell me what happened there!)... and much of 85 for that matter!
They were, seemingly, an unstoppable train in some of these shows. |

I just discovered 4/13/1984 ( Friday the 13th). Don't know how this flew under the radar for so long. Smoking show from start to finish!!! Sure it has some of the sloppiness of the era but "HIGH" energy throughout. Definetly check out the Scarlet-> Fire with some pretty trippy effects on Jerry's vocals toward the end of Fire. _________________ "I'm still walking, so I'm sure that I can dance" |

1985 is the year for me. Rollicking fast pace. Lots of fun topped with a SICK Summer Tour and my only New Year's show! _________________ Phil Phreak Phorever - Drop Dem Bombs! |

Hey Grog and welcome. You mentioned 85 Summer a couple times so I was wondering what your favorite two or three shows are in particular from this time frame. Personally I think it's all about 6/24 Riverbend and 6/25 Blossom - the Ohio section of the tour. But I know that Hershey and Merriweather are also very popular, as are the Greeks from a couple weeks prior. I'm not as big on the East Coast shows, but I do enjoy the Greek shows to some extent - with 6/15 being underrated. _________________ Even the blind man knows when the rain is falling. |

Excellent!
Glad to have another Brenthead aboard... I usually relegate the major pigpen fans to swabbing the poop deck. Just kidding...
But, yeah, 85 is pretty stellar...
Which are your favorites from that year? |
