I've had this song stuck in my head for the past few days, although perhaps "stuck" isn't so fitting since it's not like I've been trying to remove it.
So I felt compelled to start this thread after grooving just now to 12/12/80, TDIH. This version sounds really heavy, with a really deep groove, although I think the superior MOTB source could be a factor here as well.

Anyway, I know I've heard many good versions of this tune, so what are some of yours? Also, I'd really like to hear a slammin' version from '89 or '90 (my current favorite era) since it seems like it was played less by then than it was in the early '80s. |

My recent favorite has been, for some time... 11/5/79... very slow and sultry (usually I prefer faster tempo songs, but for this one, slow works). |

From that Era, my choice would be:
03-15-90 Cap Centre - fast tempo with great Jerry work - I think this was the "Without A Net" version. _________________ Even the blind man knows when the rain is falling. |

12/3/79 - Mellow, over 11 minutes long.
4/28/80 - Great aud, lots of energy.
3/21/81
10/18/83 - Intense aud.
My favorite year for this song is 1991, here are some I like to re-visit
2/19/91 - sleezy
6/24/91 - Listen to BRUUUUCCEEE on the outro
10/27/91 - Probably my favorite. _________________ He's always lived by the golden rule, that's why he'll never be mayor! |

I love 3-15-90, but I am not sure why it is so widely hailed as "best ever." I'm pretty sure 3-20-81 is the best ever. |

Yeah, I guess it didn't get mentioned as such above, but if one were to look at the Internet Archive comments for this show, or other boards' threads on Althea, it gets mentioned as the best ever. Maybe not as "widely" as I thought though, that was a hasty statement.
By the way, since I have no idea where the Black Peter thread is, did you ever listen to 5-15-81? I never listened to the one you said was the best ever, and now I don't remember what it was--what was it? |

Oop, I found the Black Peter thread in about half a second, never mind about the second question, I see it was 10-02-81. I'll pull that one out... |

Interestingly I finally listened to your Black Peter, which I think most people would rate more highly than mine...it is a tremendous version but what makes it is the solo at the end. This is not as elaborate in the 5-15 show but I like that one for the singing and the perfection of it all.
And when I went and listened to your BP I found...my new favorite Althea! If it was a good recording with some Phil, it'd really have something...anyway this is for the guitar solos, especially but not exclusively the last one, and that especially but not exclusively for the first few seconds, the way Jerry comes in is classic, typical yet perfect...
A great version that isn't maybe sung as great as others but has super-duper solos lies on my first show, 10-18-84. |

Glad you gave it a listen. I love that entire show actually (10/2/81), I consider it to be great... wish there was a better source. |

Yeah, the pre-drums is a little sloppy but still manages to mostly live up to the setlist. I agree it's a good show. 1981 seems to be a good time for Black Peter. Is that what this thread is about? The weird thing is, once you hit 'reply,' you cannot see what the thread is supposed to be about so if it isn't firmly in your mind my then, it may be too late to dodge the long arm of Swami. |

Crap, it's Althea! I needed to post before I could see that. I could go back and edit that one to make it look like I was talking about Althea, but that would be dishonest.
I really don't have much to say about Althea today. |

FYI that version was released on The Terrapin Museum limited edition 3 disc set. Monster Terrapin in there as well. |
