Wow. I was getting a little burned out on the GD - been leaning heavily on the early 80's and late 70's and no setlist looked appealing. But I didnt feel like listening to anything else. What's a head to do?? So I decided to switch gears and put on some good ole GD from that hallowed year of 1970. Hadnt listened to this one in a long time. Now I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Wonderful versions of the acoustic stuff - El Paso is killer. Jerry is skipping all over the fretboard.
And best of all - this is a fucking AUD!!! I dont know how they got such a good, clear recording (apparently the staff of the capitol theatre recorded it??) but this is excellent quality, especially the acoustic set. HIghly recommended.

I generally don't listen much to acoustic... but... as far as this show goes, I LOVE the ELECTRIC sets!
The last main ten here, which is what attracted me to it in the beginning. Of course, the 1st electric set is full of rarities as well, my favorite being... "Frieght traaaaaaaaaaaain"
Great show, and definitely a change of pace show from the 80s!
Dave, do me a favor... check out 9/13/93, seriously... there is a change of pace for you too. Or 9/22/93 if you want some sax in your dead. |

Not a fan of Cheesy Answers but the rest of these sets look tasty! 93 is always a nice change of pace. I think I've listened to parts of 9/13 before. I'll check them out. _________________ We used to play for acid, now we play for Clive. |

I think Swami and I are the only documented fans of this song.
I would recommend 9/13 first.
Not to take away from this show.. Sorry I took us off topic. This is definitely a favorite of mine from the early days. |

This is too weird since I had just finished doing my first review of Fall 1970 for the Best Sources Project and had New Orleans>Searchin' from this show on my headphones when I ran into this post! I freaking LOVE THIS SHOW! This is easily one of my favorite all time Grateful Dead recordings.. You are so right about the acoustic set too. I love the "Godzilla vs King Kong" stage chatter during the set too
.
Weir: ."Of course you all realize we're all missing Godzilla vs King Kong on TV..."
Garcia: "He's a mean motherf*cker...and later on we're missing "The 39 Steps"
Weir: "Its a remake.."
Garcia: It is? Oh bummer.."
Weir "So you're not missin' nothing later on. but right now you're missing King Kong vs Godzilla and I hope to tell ya... I didn't get to see King Kong, but Godzilla, he was one motherf*cker. He spit fire, radioactive fire, and blows things up.."
And so begins the intro to Rosalie McFall..
To answer Duderinos question on how they got such a fine sounding audience recording, well a Capitol Theatre security guard by the name of Ken Lee & his wife Judy recorded it with the venue owners permission from the balcony with their microphones spread out 20-25 feet on the balcony rail! Who is going to hassle security about taping? They also recorded the legendary 6/24/70 epic at the same theatre from the balcony railing and the 3/21/70 show too! |

Thanks for the info. I knew it was something like that. Love the 6/24/70 show too. Excellent recording. You can hear the music but occasionally a stoned comment to "keep it real" Yeah the godzilla banter is classic..Listening to Darkstar from 11/8. This is when it is nice to work from home - a loud interstellar 1970 Darkstar crashing through the still dawn... _________________ We used to play for acid, now we play for Clive. |

This is a great show that I didn't ever hear as a young Head. Awesome, primal stuff. It gets so quiet during DS. I hope they kicked the crap out of whoever was yelling "woooooh!" during those really still moments. |
