My dad was a huge Pogo fan, that's Simple J. Malarkey, Walt Kelly's caricature of Senator Joseph McCarthy of McCarthyism fame. Kelly showed that he had considerable balls making fun of him during the Red Scare in newspapers around the country in the funnies.

Also he made fun of the John Birch Society, this book is still in the family collection along with the rest of the Pogo books and the Calvin and Hobbes tomes:

I think Howland Owl would make for a better avatar.

If one was able to shrink this lightning filled volcano, it might be cool...

I like that exploding star, too.... Not sure my posts could live up to it, though!

Someone else was recommending pics of Jerry, which I liked more.....but gee, I just make a few posts and get dragged into avatar politics....

I just discovered this thread; interestingly I just switched to a Pogo avatar a few days ago, although it's not entirely coincidental. Back in 1997 when I discovered the internet, I had to come up with an email address. The night before I had seen a possum while in an altered state, so Pogo came to mind. In the strip, there was a groundhog infant named Grundoon who only spoke in consonants, and I thought I remembered him saying "bzfgt." Years later I checked, and what he had actually said was "bzgft." But by then I'd had the email address for several years and had gotten used to using the handle, so I've left it "bzfgt." I'm not sure why the image of Wiley Katt (I think it is he, NOT Simple J., who was basically the same character though) comes up on the image search, but the connection is being made somewhere--maybe someone else misspelled it, or maybe the computer sees it as close enough.

I tried the image search...'bzfgt' comes up with lots of Pogo, but 'bzgft' doesn't come up with any! I have to do more research...

I have about 25 or 26 book collections of Pogo I inherited if you want me to put up any images for avatar use, the Jack Acid Society Black Book is in there, I was just looking at it.
