Robert Hunter - Box of Rain
Quote:
While there's been no lack of opportunity to hear the Grateful Dead perform songs co-written by Robert Hunter, live performances by the Dead's elusive lyricist have been more of a rarity. His 1990 solo-acoustic tour was therefore a major event, and the best of those sold-out gigs are collected on this live album. A BOX OF RAIN includes intimate, electrifying versions of such classic Dead songs as "Box of Rain," "Scarlet Begonias," "Franklin's Tower," "Ripple," and "Deal" direct from the source.

Jerry Garcia Band is the second album, and first live album, by the Jerry Garcia Band. It was recorded in the spring of 1990 at The Warfield in San Francisco.

The Jerry Garcia Band was a San Francisco Bay Area rock band led by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Garcia founded the band in 1975; it remained the most important of his various side-projects until his death in 1995. "The Garcia Band," as it was often referred to by the fans, toured and recorded sporadically throughout its twenty-year existence, often during times when the Grateful Dead was not touring, but also, sometimes overlapping tours during the same periods.

Over the years, the lineup of the band changed a number of times. The one constant member besides Garcia himself was bassist John Kahn. Melvin Seals had the next longest tenure, serving as keyboardist from 1980 onward. Seals became band leader following Garcia's death and changed the band's name to JGB.

Jerry Garcia's musical interests were famously varied, and this was reflected in the diverse music played by his band. Like the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band played rock music that was influenced by blues, folk, country, and jazz. The band also played rhythm and blues and reggae songs, and rock versions of American roots music. Jerry Garcia notably covered many songs by Bob Dylan with the Jerry Garcia Band. Like the Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band emphasized musical improvisation, and helped create what is now known as jam band music.

During Garcia's lifetime, the Jerry Garcia Band released one studio album, Cats Under the Stars, and one live album, Jerry Garcia Band. Several more live albums were released posthumously

I had posted this up on demonoid over a year ago, and it is still active. Since it is an older torrent, I used BB Code to link it directly to my homesite link at Darkside RG

25 years of GRATEFUL DEAD concerts (100+ live performances) and from them creates (seamlessly) a platonic ideal version of 'Dark Star' one second short of an hour. No Plunderphonic pyrotechnics here but a dead-paced unfolding that imbricates times and places, staying pretty much freeform (with psychedelic climax) until 40 minutes in when there's a rock burst burst followed by a Phil Lesh feature and then echoes of old Mexico. For Grateful dead fans, close listeners and the curious.

each track is joined by Astroludes and there is an additional mystery * track concealed on the disk that will not play unless you search for it (and that's a clue).

This 2 disc set is the latest plunderphonic album and was commissioned by the Dead, or as Phil Lesh put it, "David Gans and I sort of talked him into it"."It" is composed exclusively of live recordings (from the Vault) of the Grateful Dead's "Dark Star" and was originally released as a single disc, "Transitive Axis". It was originally proposed that Oswald make something "very short".
"What interested me most about the Grateful Dead was their extended playing style", explains Oswald. "I wrote a counter-proposal to David saying, 'Well, I've been thinking about it and all I can hear is the opposite - something very long.'"
So, in addition to the original 59 minute 59 second composition released as Transitive axis, Oswald decided there was still enough territory to explore in another composition which would be released as a second disk. Those who managed to obtain Transitive Axis were encouraged to send in $11.00 to receive the second disc when it became available. When Oswald completed the second disc, "Mirror Ashes", they were put together in a package that features cool visual time maps and extensive liner notes by Rob Bowman that centered on interviews with Lesh and Garcia.

i just ripped and put this one up a little while ago. After some extensive searching, I have yet to see anyone share this one. great tunes from a great time! Enjoy! Very Happy

Bobby and the Midnites

Bobby and the Midnites was a rock group led by Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. The band was Weir's main side project during the first half of the 1980s. They released two albums, but were better known for their live concerts than for their work in the recording studio. With a rhythm section that included jazz veterans Billy Cobham and, for a time, Alphonso Johnson, Bobby and the Midnites played rock music that was influenced by jazz-rock fusion.

History of the Band

In 1978, Bob Weir had led a side project called the Bob Weir Band that played a number of concerts. Besides Weir himself, two members of the Bob Weir Band were in Bobby and the Midnites. One was guitarist and singer Bobby Cochran, formerly of Steppenwolf. The other was keyboardist and singer Brent Mydland, who in the interim had joined the Grateful Dead. Matthew Kelly was another "Midnite" who had already played in a band with Weir — Kingfish, which Kelly and Dave Torbert had founded in 1973, and which Weir had played in full time from 1974 to 1976. Kelly played guitar, harmonica, and congas. Tim Bogert, who had previously been in Vanilla Fudge and Beck, Bogert & Appice, was recruited to play bass guitar. The Midnites' drummer was Billy Cobham, a highly regarded jazz and fusion musician who had played with Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, among others.

The first Bobby and the Midnites concert was at the Golden Bear, in Huntington Beach, California, on June 30, 1980. The band played a number of live dates from mid-1980 to early 1981. Then Alphonso Johnson replaced Bogert on bass. Johnson had been in Weather Report, and had played with Cobham in the CBS All-Stars. This slightly revised configuration of Bobby and the Midnites recorded the band's self-titled first album.

The Midnites did not play live again until the following year. Brent Mydland and Matthew Kelly had left the lineup, and Dave Garland had joined. Garland sang and played keyboards and saxophone. Starting in January 1982, this group toured extensively when the Grateful Dead were not on the road. A 60 minute concert video of this Midnites lineup was released on VHS in 1991.

In March 1983, the band had its final change of personnel, when Kenny Gradney, formerly of Little Feat, replaced Johnson on bass. The band continued touring, playing many live dates, and in 1984 released a second studio album. The last Bobby and the Midnites concert was at the Rio, in Valley Stream, New York, on September 30, 1984.

After Bobby and the Midnites, Bob Weir's next non-Grateful Dead musical appearances were with Kingfish, sitting in on a number of concerts in 1984 and again in 1986. Weir also played several solo acoustic shows in 1985.

To say Bruce Hornsby is a multifaceted musician would be like calling Leonardo DaVinci a renaissance man – certainly it is true, but also rather superfluous and redundant.

With the release of the new boxed set, Intersections, Bruce Hornsby has shown just how multi-talented he really is – from piano based power-pop to bluegrass and century’s old fiddle tunes to improvisational jazz the songs covered in this set stretch across the American song book.

The bulk of the music presented here is culled form previously unreleased live cuts. This is not only good news for the hard core fan who already has all the studio tracks, but for the casual listener interested in understanding Hornsby’s work. As is the way for many of the artists I enjoy, Hornsby’s studio albums are often less than totally satisfying. In a live setting is where Bruce has always found his own, and performed nothing less than inspiring.

The set is separated into three categories spanning four disks. The first, “Top 90 Time” contains the hits and singles, albeit often live and in a different arrangement than what is found on the original album.

The second disk, labeled “Solo Piano, Tribute Records, Country-bluegrass, Movie Songs” contains just that. The first seven songs are instrumental piano numbers uniquely titles “Songs A-H”. The rest are songs Hornsby either played on for friends and co-conspirators, movie soundtracks, and tribute albums.

The remaining two disks, named “By Request” are fan favorites and personal selections.

Interestingly, Hornsby has elected to keep most of his up tempo numbers as the officially released studio version. It is on his slower ballads that he has brought unreleased liver versions to this set. This is perhaps because fans were treated to primo live versions of his faster songs on the 2000 release Here Come the Noisemakers. Or, perhaps it is because live, his up tempo numbers can stretch into double digits, minute wise, which would leave few spaces for more songs.

Whatever the reason, we are still left with a tremendous collections of songs showcasing one of the more talented musicians of the last 20 years.

The boxed set is encased in a lovely three fold binder and includes a 59 page booklet highlighting his career. It includes a personal note from Bruce about each of the songs, numerous photographs, an a tongue-in-cheek retrospective of the critical assessment of his albums (including a number of reviews completely panning his work).

Also included in the set is a DVD full of videos clips (ranging from super cheesy ready-for-MTV videos from the 80’s to highly stylized clips directed by Spike Lee to live performances with the Grateful Dead, Roger Waters and even the “Star Spangled Banner” performed with Branford Marsalis at the World Series.) 23 performances on DVD (21 previously unreleased)

*Note! I did not release the DVD in this torrent which depending on the popularity of this collection It may happen in future instances*

This is an excellent set, filled with enough new material to please the biggest fans, and yet so accessible as to find a few new fans along the way.

53 tracks on 4 CD's (26 previously unreleased)

Collaborations with The Grateful Dead, Shawn Colvin, members of the NY Philharmonic Orchestra, Ricky Skaggs, Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans, Robbie Robertson, Branford Marsalis, Chaka Khan, Roger Waters, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, Gregory Hines, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many more!

Thanks, chinarider! The gratefulbreed.blogspot.com source is .mp3. It's quite good as .mp3 goes, ranging from 466 kbps to 537 kbps.

If you'd like a lossless rip from pristine vinyl here's the btjunkie.org link to the Demonoid torrent (you don't need to be a Demonoid member to use the link):

Agreed... I will DL it just because I am a completist though. Probably never listen, except I will listen to the bonus disc, not from the Egypt shows.

Too bad they blew those shows, really...

So, basically, Rhino is putting out whack ass products realizing that Heads will eat it up because we have an obsession with cataloguing and completion...

Sometimes the remasters aren't as good as the original masters, I have heard that the Europe 72 GD album on LP has a fuller sound than the Rhino remaster. Lots of time and money was put into those original masters too, but the proof is in the pudding, you would have to listen to both to find out. The vinyl might sound better, especially if you have a mint LP and a great system. Tough to say offhand though. I myself bought the record of Thick as a Brick, a decent copy, for .50, though, not a bad deal.

Nice deal man! 50 cents for a masterpiece.

Yeah, I think the conversion to MP3 for listening via computer would destroy any noticeable difference between CD and Vinyl... perhaps I wasted a posting over there, but without listening to his, my thought was that perhaps his has been used a lot which will wear down the vinyl.

I remember when I would by vinyl, and only play it to make tape copies of it, so that I could preserve it forever... now I don't have any... my first album (of my own...) was the Thompson Twins!

But, the albums were the seed for me loving the hippie music scene. My folks had dozens of albums, and many of them were the following:
Jefferson Airplane
The Doors
Cream
Sly & The Family Stone
The Who
The Beatles
Christopher Cross (ok, that one is not at all hip, but the explanation of my love of Brent tunes like Easy To Love You)
-too bad no Dead, I had to discover them on my own as a senior in high school, by which time they were almost all done-

and from my sister's stash:
Queen
The Police
Van Halen (and Eddie can't hold a candle to Jerry)

I sold them all to a used record shop for a song when I was in school to buy... ummm... you know.

Looks like you did... looks like a nice compilations of S>Fs and slight variations of the combo.
Cool.

You might need to "force start" it to seed it. Usually when I upload I have to do that.

I tried to DL it, didn't work... no seeders...
It looks like you placed the DL torrent file in the folder to be DLed. I don't think you should do that.

Follow the demonoid directions exactly

And make sure you create the torrent properly (look at Utorrent help to learn how).

It is painful the first time, it took me a few tries, but you'll get the hang of it. PM if the above doesn't work.

Released by Rhino, complete shows, as DLs. I wonder if this means they will do some complete show releases from other previous Road Trip Series shows?

Demonoid is a bit torrent site where it gives you the links to DL whatever is offered above, for free.

I will post an explanatory thread on how to bit torrent.

Awesome thanks. So far I have only collected music from Rapidshare. There is no Dead sbd that I do not have if anyone is looking to trade. I could post my complete collection in another thread if anyone was interested. Don't really know if that is appropriate or not. Anyways cheers

Remember that if you torrent, you expose your IP# to third parties easily, and always have an upstream. Anonymous proxies don't work with torrents as far as I know.
