Jack Straw, Bertha opener 9/19/90. You can tell the boys were rarin' to go this night. One question - during J. Straw, is that Phil or Bruce coming in on the Jerry verse part??

I've been such a 90's Bird Song whore lately.

This is a great sounding SBD especially for 67. The first 3 songs are a Pigpen showcase which is very cool. Schoolgirl has an amazing Jerry solo and also check out Pig on that harp.

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but I am not that high on this Cap Centre Bird Song. I was at that show, and have heard the bootleg many times since.

The jam is long, true...but it is too aimless for me, wandering out in no particular direction. Certainly had potential but didn't bring the jam home like some other versions. One such better version was the previous year at the Cap Centre, 3-16-90.

Now as for the Victim-Scarlet-Fire that opens Set 2 of 3-21-91? Awesome.

Love that 3/16/90 Birdsong.
My SOTD - 11/1/85 Stagger Lee. Listened to Set 1 of DP21 this morning on the way to work. I love when Bob hits the whammy bar after the "She shot him in the balls" line.

The 1/2 Step from that show is also very good. I saw that show too. I believe that one was fairly well-attended by LSP regulars (Swami, Duderino and myself at least).

I'm going to re-listen to that Bird today. I'm of the view that it was a very good Bird Song, but not an all-timer. It had some tremendous moments, but it did meander a bit. I'll say this: I don't think I've ever listened to it without going "Damn!" once or twice. I still think that 3/20 (the previous night) was the best show of that run.

Underrated show. Great energy for the first show of the tour and nicely jammed out Playin. This is a new source I think. The old one was a decent aud, but this is pretty crispy. Listening to the Bama right now.

5/14/80 Sugaree.
Preceded by a nice Stranger which slows down during the jam and segues perfectly into Sugaree. At 11 minutes, not the longest version but it packs a heavy wallop. LOTS of Jerry fanning and power chording.

Love that show. A little sloppy but high energy and inspired.

4/3/87 Crazy Fingers. Close to perfection for this era.

That is, IMO, the best show in the post-Brent 1990. Followed closely by 12/12/90.

At the time I think I liked the next night better (I attended the 18th, 19th and 20th) but now I'm not so sure. I haven't listened to these much lately, I did spin the 19th last fall at some point and liked it. It's reputation seems to have grown with the passing years. I do think that the China Cat from the 20th is quite overrated.

I am a big fan of 10/20/84, but it is not due to the C>R.... speaking of which, I might need to revisit that show soon.

Oh, sorry, I meant 18th, 19th and 20th of 9-90. I don't actually know 10-20-84, I'm not sure if that C>R is good or not. The one from 9-20-90 gets mentioned a lot but I didn't think it was the greatest, Garcia was a bit tentative although at some point in Rider he really kicks it out. The 18th had/has the best To Lay Me Down for my money. The 19th has a lot of good stuff, but the 20th had the Dark Star and I must listen to that and see what I think, at the time it was great but I don't think I've listened to it since the 90s.

Actually, a quick investigation has revealed that 10-20-84 has no China Cat...which is probably why your fanhood is not due to it. And there was no 10-19 show. 10-20 looks like a pretty good set list.

I know your only supposed to post one song a day, well I am making up for a couple lost days with this post.

5-7-69 The Other One. This is uber awesome. Listen now!!!!

Now for my second song of the day, 10-9-89 Dark Star!!!!!!! I had a pretty mediocre to crappy day at work, got in the car listened to the end of PITB then heard the audience over the Dark Star that the band was playing. As I was driving, Jerry began to sing "Dark star crashes" and I looked up and saw a shooting star. What an unexpected awesome ending of a pretty crappy day.

Well ... I'm not a huge fan of Tenn Jed but Phil's intervention would bother me if it would be a constant noise, but having his intervention in just 1 part of that one song in that one show makes me smile ... that's all ... you know I am a PhilHead Laughing

^ As am I. I just don't like it when he sings. Box of Rain is one of my favorite Dead songs, but the live versions are just terrible IMO.

A Dick Enberg reference, nice!! By the way my friend in San Diego informs me that Enberg is the play-by-play man for the San Diego Padres this year. As sad as this be, Enberg is my idol....dream job has always been play-by-play and Enberg is one of the best ever. Certainly the best by far for Tennis. Oh my!!!

By the way there was no GD show on 6/21/81.

07/17/89

The Music Never St.

(surpised by the midi extended jam)

China>Ride (expecially the latter is pure fire - the drums at one point seemed to explode)

Sounds cool and all and sorry to burst your bubble but if you want a legit TMNS check out ANY from '77(there's a few week ones from early in the year), '78, '79 or '91

No problem ... I like to get suggestions but this thread is about the song of the day so, during the car ride I didn't expect that jam (not so extended but juicy) thia was a happy surprise that made that song my song of today. I am sure that there are better versions out and better shows ... Very Happy

And yes 7/17/89 is a very well played TMNS considering the era.

Yeah, I always loved Enberg's announcing, He's getting up there in age. Maybe he lives in San Diego. At any rate the Padrres are lucky to have him. I think I remember hearing him this pst NFL season.

05/03/79 Playin in The Band.
The first Brent Playin', and he is not afraid to jump in to the weirdness. This is an 18:11 monster, with several different themes and a really cool jam with those crazy Brent synth noises during the few minutes leading into drumz. Highly recommended. Also, Koch this might have some "Orbital" action going on.

Hard to Handle...4/29/71. Believe me I'm not a huge Pigpen fan . I much prefer his shorter tunes than the long raps. Love Big Bosss Man, The Rub, EZ wind etc. But if this version of Hard to Handle doesn't get yer foot tappin' or the urge to jump outta yer chair and cut a rug; nothing will. Outstanding!

What I can't remember is if it was paired with Victim or not?
