Sometimes I hear a segue between two songs that works out so well that I often wonder why they don't do it more often. I suppose one of the gold standards for such a segue would be Viola Lee>Cumberland from 10/31/70..... doesn't get much better than this. What are some lesser known favorites?

I'll start off with Franklin's>Walkin' Blues - 6/19/89
....lucasmcain mentioned this about a year ago and I just got to checking it out. Good stuff Cool

Unlike other versions of Walkin' Blues that transition out of the previous song, this one is a "true segue" and probably the only one that works.

China Cat>Cumberland 3/9/85 is a smoker.
I heard 2/20/82 Franklin's>Samson the other day, was pretty cool.
12/4/79 there is an Estimated>Franklin's...is that rare?

He's Gone > UJB from 5/10/80 is amazing.
China Cat > Crazy Fingers > Rider 7/29/88 worked for the most part
Scarlet>Bucket 3/21/85 was a nice segue, but I would have rather heard FOTM. Mad

So glad you checked that one out!!! I was there and thought they pulled it off rather well.

As for others....Come On guys!! 11/29/80 Shakedown >Franklin's.... A monster.

4/2/73 the Me and Bobby Mcgee out of Here Come Sunshine was really out of nowhere and probably one of my favorites.

That Help>Slip>Fire was from 9/20/91 Boston Garden

There are a handful of Maggie's Farms that showed up out of either a Cumberland ( Buffalo 86 I think??) or a cowboy tune like Me&My Uncle ( Boston 91 )

As a matter a of fact Me & My Uncle seemed to play well with other tunes. In the early 70's it could appear out of a deep Dark Star or Other One as well as hold a slot in the first set.

1985 has too many to go into. Not all of them worked real well. There is the reverse Playin from 3/31/85 that slops it's way into a high energy Day Tripper. There is a Cryptical >Eyes that isn't really a transition. I really like the first set OMSN>Fire that opens the 7/13.

Also there is a least one Birdsong>Johnny B Goode that I caught in Charlotte 10/22/89 that really was a surprise because they started it like Promised Land but Bobby threw the curve with the lyrics. I needed that one bad because I had got the Birdsong>Promised Land just one too many times.

I think you are looking for smooth transitions not just the complete changes in direction yes?

Pretty rare, it was only done in 72 I think... and not a lot of times.

@ lucasmcain, yes, 9/20/91 is the H>S>FOTM... good call...

Yes. Although those turn-on-a-dime transitions aren't too shabby, I was in search for complete segues. They're not easy to search for since deadbase.com doesn't differentiate between the two. I see some pretty good suggestions, though..... looks like I'll be busy for awhile.

10/2/81 PITB>Shakedown! How could I forget that one. I love the few times that Shakedown has emerged from a PITB jam... definitely cool. This is the best of the bunch.

It is late and I am stuffed from overeating, but the first one that comes to my tired mind is Playin>Sampson and Delilah>Playin from 3/19/77.

One more before I retire is the Other One>MAMU>Other One from 8/6/71. They also did some creative transitions out of and sometimes back to Dark Star in 71.

12/5/71 - Dark Star>MAMU>Dark Star>Sittin on Top of the World

Can't say this is my favorite Dark Star by a long shot, but it is a decent harbinger of the slew of great ones in 72. The transition to Sittin is not the smoothest but Jerry just shreds on a very fast SOTOTW.

I guess I will give up on this thread if nobody continues, but I like it and encourage others to keep it going.

No, this thread is great.... keep it going Cool

There's a Throwing Stones>Sugar Magnolia from 4/3/85 that I like. They teased Sugar Magnolia out of Throwing Stones years earlier on 10/11/83, but Jerry ended up vetoing and the band played Touch instead. I'm glad they went through with it here..... the Bobby double-shot works to end the second set, and the band tops it off with a Day Job..... but that's another thread.

Miracle>US Blues in the encore slot 5/11/86. A real smooth and surprising transition. Too bad the US Blues is tepid at best.

10/22/71 - Cryptical>Deal

....this was done again on the 29th, but 10/22 has it beat. In fact, I have yet to find a smoother transition into Deal.

Listened to 5/19/74 last night and besides the amazing Truckin>Jam>MLB Jam it also included a wonderful Jerry ballad double header of Wharf Rat>Stella Blue.

Dark Star>St. Stephen>Not Fade Away>Lovelight
Wonderful!
I didn't even bother listening to the 20+ minute Lovelight, but if you are into that sort of thing you'll probably love it. Killer China Cat tease in NFA!

I second this. It's no secret that the Dark Star bonanza has some smooth-as-silk transitions, but this jam that opens the late show (!) is so tight and well done that it's hard to believe they never tried it again.

7/17/76: space>Eyes: not exactly an unusual combo, but the move to Eyes out of the jam after the Other One is note perfect.

10/3/76: the whole second set, but the Wheel>jam>Good Lovin>jam>Comes a Time is particularly slick and particularly mindblowing.

12/31/76 Good Lovin>Samson. seriously.

4/25/77 Wharf Rat>Playin reprise. totally bananas.

5/22/77: Eyes>Wharf Rat>Terrapin>Dew

1/15/79: Miracle>Shakedown

5/25/72: Uncle John's>Wharf Rat>Dark Star

did someone already say 9/19/90 UJB>Let it Grow?

how about Scarlet>Fire or Est>Eyes? We could pick particularly unique versions of standard segues, but it looks like everyone's focusing on out-of-the-blue one shot transitions?

some more I thought of while I was putting my kid to bed (A+ dad, that's me) that all stand out as particularly unique:
9/26/73 Truckin>Eyes (the little jam in between)
5/12/74 MLB jam>Row Jimmy
6/23/74 intro jam>Ship of Fools (a classic)
8/6/74 Playin>Scarlet>Playin (another classic)
9/24/76 Playin>Supplication>Playin
10/15/76 Other One>Comes a Time>Franklins
1/30/78 Stella>Franklins
8/28/81 Saint>Wheel>Never Trust
12/31/81 Playin>Terrapin>Playin (not unusual, but unusually tasty)

Since the thread started with the 10-31-70 Viola Lee>Cumberland, I'll toss in the 3-21-70 Friend of Mine>Viola Lee>Seven>Cumberland. Ha!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 12-19-78 Stella Blue>NFA in this thread...not your usual segue!

How about the 4-29-77 Scarlet Begonias>Goin' Down the Road? Not too typical for '77.

And I'll add some '76 ballads for Kochman....6-26-76, Crazy Fingers>Stella Blue.
Also 6-22-76, Crazy Fingers>Comes a Time.
& even the Crazy Fingers>Wharf Rat from 6-3-76 (the show of the 13-minute Slipknot!)....
Then there's the Stephen>Eyes from 6-9-76....

I don't really consider Crazy Fingers a ballad... I consider it more of a filler than anything. Maybe that's just me...

Okay...that was supposed to be in the Medley of the day thread Laughing

Found another Wharf Rat>Stella Blue (10/27/73) About to listen to that 2nd set now. Looks amazing! (by 2nd set I mean starting at PITB Wink)

Me And My Uncle [2:43] > Bertha [5:26] ; Me And Bobby McGee [5:21] ; Tennessee Jed [7:31] ; Playing In The Band [10:20] > Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [7:35] > Big River [4:#17] > Playing In The Band [8:38] ; He's Gone > Truckin' > Nobody's Fault But Mine Jam > Wharf Rat > Stella Blue ; Sugar Magnolia
Encore Uncle John's Band

4/10/78 - Franklins Tower>Black Peter is weird as hell, and a tad flat...but it's got magic and lots of tail end fanning from each.

This was mentioned on another thread recently dealing with favorite versions of songs and first mentioned by someone else, but the UJB>He Was A Friend of Mine combo from 12/12/69 is rare and just seamless.

Playin>Franklins from 6/4/77 and the transition is a good one. Given that they usually, but not always, played Help and Slipknot before Frankins in 77 this was unusual.

As long as I am on unusual transitions into Franklins, the Wharf Rat>Franklins >Sugar Mags from one of my favorites of the year - 3/19/77 is one, but this transition into Franklins is not so great,

the transition from Wharf >Franklins in that same trifecta is much better on 7/8/78, despite the fact that Gar blows off the last verse of Wharf Rat.

I'll see that and raise you a 7-26-72 Paramount: Dark Star - Comes A Time.

^^ Ya' know I saw them do that combo about a week earlier at Roosevelt Stadium (7-18-72). I thought that was the only time it was played. I will have to give 7-26 a listen, not sure if I'm familiar with it. Thanks swami. Nice to see you here Cool

Having looked into this, it only happened 4 times...
So, pretty rare.
