Were there any comments in interviews or books by any members of the band that discussed or explained why they dropped Bird Song from their playlist for the entirety of the 1972 tour of Europe?

Oh, they absolutely could have!
Hahahahahaha...
It's a good question though, why the omission?

Many moons later, I believe I have the answer to your question.

Bird Song, as well as many others, was not played after Summer 71... it came back at 07-18-72 Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, N.J.
Mama Tried was another that took a break...

The reason, to me, at first glance, would appear to be the transition from Pigpen to Keith.

And while Pigpen was there in E72, Keith was probably just not up to snuff on it yet. Considering he'd been with the band for less than a year when they stormed England in April 72, Keith had covered a LOT of ground... just not B Song and some others.

This seems to be the most plausible answer to the omission of Bird Song. In light of this thought process, I am willing to bet it was simply not rehearsed for the E72 tour. They seemed to make sure every song was down to perfection for this tour. Which also makes sense as to why some songs were played every night (Ten Jed as an example). Which oddly makes this one of the few tours I barely touch when I am choosing on my own.

Well, that was kind of typical at least through 72, in the first set, though you would likely get a juicy PITB near the end of the set. Even in the 2nd set your jam vehicles after Pigpen left were either going to be Dark Star or TOO or maaaaaybe Truckin. It wasn't until 2/9/73 when they broke out HCS and Eyes that they started to get some breathing room.

I definitely couldn't replicate my project of doing a whole month or tour from 72 again...

I think you're also right about what they had managed to get down before Europe.
