IMO 69 is "the" DS year ... it has that special aura. I love the 70s versions a lot ine ach you find some famtastic stuff ... then the 07-12-90 version of the digital era is awesome too ... BUT the 69 is the trascendental period for the DSs.

It is my opinion that 2/28/69 (Live Dead) set the bar for whatever followed. But I really dig those fast shorter intense versions from 68...say 10/13/68 for instance Cool

Live Dead definitely set the bar, but that doesn't mean they didn't surpass it. In many ways I think of it as the 'classic' version the way I think of Cornell as the classic S>F...lots of licks that are played relatively straight and forever seared into my consciousness. But it's hard to judge this, especially based on the playing of the whole band, as actually better than things like 4-8-72, 4-24-72, or 11-13-72...

1969. I do love the '70 and '72 versions though. But '69 set the bar so high, it would prove to be hard to ascend that high consistently, at least within the structure of DS. The '72 versions really get spacey, where the '69s tend to stay a little closer to the (minimal) structure. For those that aren't familiar with the What A Long Strange Trip It's Been version (2:45) should check it out. It's amazing that a song that minimal can take so many different paths to greatness.

Had to vote 69. Hard to ignore the 72-74 versions, the jazzy elements gave a very different feel than the cackling energy of the 69's.

2-24-74 was a personal fav.

I did get into '69 for a while this year, but I can't stay there. The main problem is that the band lacks subtlety compared to later years, as magnificent as some of the Dark Stars are. I can see why many people think '72-'74 is the peak--the band is more experimental in the '60s, and more nuanced in the later years, and '72-'74 is sort of the balance point where the two merge.

I voted for 1972 - just like what Phil and Jerry were doin in some of those versions (7/26/72, 8/27/72, 11/19/72, 12/11/72 come to mind).

Yeah seriously, show yourself. Did someone pick that year just to [CENSORED] with us?

I went with 73. Close contenders were 69,72, 89, and last but not least 68. There are good Dark Stars in every era. For post Garcia Dark Star action '99 get my vote for 4-17-99 PL&F.

73 has everything that I could ever want in a Dark Star, such pivotal moments like 11-11-73 and the much debated 12-6-73. Then there are those that are under the radar like 2-26-73 (a dicks picks release) and 10-30-73 (DS>MLBJ>DS>Stella>Eyes>WRS>LIG Shocked ).
