Haha... I went with 72 myself... some solid ones in there, often featuring the tiger, which is a great moment in music whenever it arouses from its sleep.

But '69 is mopping up on the other thread...the band couldn't do as much in '69 and Garcia was not even remotely as interesting a guitar player. If they'd quit in 1970 they'd be remembered as a damn good psychedelic band that wasn't particularly adept at writing songs, sort of like Can only maybe a little less interesting...Dark Stars are the highlight of their '69 schtick, no question. But the musical quality is hardly even comparable with 1972...

Great point. 69 was far from their peak, especially Jerry!
If they had retired in 74... I wonder, how would they be looked at today?
Or 86, if Jerry had actually died then?
