Considering that I've only been listening to the Dead a couple years, my knowledge and experience is far inferior to most here, but I think that despite how many shows you've heard or even gone to, Jerry has touched your life in a deep way. The way he spoke with intelligance, wisdome and pure laughable humor reflects not only on his music, but the way people remember him. After I started to listen to the Dead I kept seeing those bears, the owsley bears and I thought at first that those bears were Jerry bears because Jerry was just a loveable and soft person that his traits are like a teddy bear. He picked me up when I was down and picked me up even higher when I wasnt. When I hear "Jerry Garcia" the first image that pops into my mind is the guy with the guitar with a huge grin on his face and those damn sunglasses. I just can't not smile when I think of that. Jerry was much more than just a person, he was a symbol. A symbol of happiness, tranquility and doing the best you can for someone, even if you're state of being isnt exactly perfect (I'm refering to 1994-5 of course).I've never known a man like Jerry Garcia and I doubt I ever will. Some where up in heaven right now he's sitting on some rocking chair with a toothpick playing some blues and smiling. Because theres nothing left to do but smile smile smile when you've touched so many people. Thanks Jer!

RIP.

Not everybody here has been listening at committed level for forty years. Very Happy Or even ten. But you're right, I think. Jerry and the Dead have touched our lives in important ways that we want to talk about and communicate, sometimes personally and sometimes in our reaction/response to the music, or to different eras of it. (Kochman, for example, has been especially moved by Donna's contribution.)

Welcome

Dave

Indeed. I think Koch has had to move to the nearest latrine due to some of Mrs. Godcheaux's contributions Exclamation

I actually am undergoing a radical new treatment whereas I will no longer hear the octave that she wails at. That means I will still be able to hear her nicer moments... but not the shrieks...

The treatment itself is similar to this...

Actually, in his personal life the guy seems like a complete and total douche. I think even sycophant Blair Jackson talks about how he was too much of a weasel to break up with his fiance in person but sent an aide to do it, didn't even bother to see his infant daughter from 1991 until his death, basically avoided all responsibility and mature interaction with other humans in order to live a junkie rock star fantasy life; whenever something looked like responsibility he ran and hid and got others to pick up the pieces and do the dirty work.

The amazing thing is he seems to have had so much charm and charisma and been so likeable that nobody seems to remember any of this with bitterness, and of course we all sort of worship the guy. That may be a cliche about deadheads but our "secret" is that it's true!

Wow, I hadn't heard about some of those slimebag things he did... like with the fiancee.
I got dumped via e-mail once, on a day I was supposed to have a nice night at home with the girl watching movies. Was pretty harsh...

But, an aide?! Wow.

And, why would he not see his kid?

Well, I think it's mostly in the Blair Jackson bio...he had a GF named Manasha around '90 or so, they had a kid, she was only in her early 20s or something and he met someone closer to his own age and left and didn't look back. Then that one was the one who was dumped by proxy, I think. I hate to give the details because I might mess it up or not remember clearly, but the basic pattern of behavior is what I got out of Jackson's book.

I think Light Into Ashes quoted Phil as saying something like "Avoiding confrontation is almost a religion in this band," and Garcia seemed to take it to a higher level. I think Betty Cantor Jackson said she didn't even approach Jerry after they ripped her off for her Dead Set-era recordings because he had too much to deal with as it was...it seems like he had people hypnotized. He was sort of a Svengali, except rather than getting people in his power he got them out of his hair...that's the impression I get from things I've read, of course I only know superficial details and peoples' reports.

Grateful Dead gossip hour! I love it.

It's odd, because whenever you see him in interviews, he is such an amicable fellow... like a happy little santa type. But, then the dark side is usually hidden in such cases.

Didn't he have Parrish or one of the roadies tell Koontz (round #1 in the mid-70's) to shove off, as he was hiding from her and scared of her? And I think
the older woman (Barbara something..) got the "lock out" in 93 when he got back with Koontz...
and Sam Cutler the former road manager has nothing kind to say about Garcia - I think something along the lines of "coward".
Most of the biographies definitely reveal a side of Jerry that is not pleasant.

Someone suggested that Jerry looks like he's having gas issues in this shot.

So, in the end, we can agree that he wasn't "the fucking coolest guy"?

Not only was he not the coolest guy, he had terrible body odor from his utter lack of hygiene during the H days.

Haha, no doubt!
We should retitle this thread.
