I can't vote here. I don't listen to Dark Star very often, but it's an epic piece of improv jamming, it's in its own world. I don't have a favorite either.

Hard to pick a favorite. But some come close to the divine, and compltely take me to a new space and higher plane. Some I really dig--DP36,DS>DEW...DP11, DS>Cumberland...11/11/73, 2/24/74. Some older ones-Live Dead(a gimme) 10/12/68-raw and naked! There is a shorter one from 91 that Koch turned me on to,great latter day version along with 10/31/91 w/Kesey. Lastly(Guess it could be my favorite piece of music by the Dead) 8/1/73...DS>El Paso>Eyes>Dew. Friggin' mind numbing. One that I really don't like at all(alot of folks rave about this one too)12/06/73. Just because it's 45 min. long doesn't make it good. For me it puts me zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.Uninspired!

I like listening to Dark Star, as long as it's a well-executed version. One I always recommend is the 8/21/72 Berkeley Dark Star>El Paso, one of the great evil Dark Stars.

8/24/72 (DS>Dew) and 8/27/72 (DS>El Paso) have notable Dark Stars too. I mean, there are a lot of good Dark Stars from different eras, and I haven't heard them all, but this was a pretty prime period. 8/21 is in the zone brilliance.

Exactly right! For me Dark Star is a musical piece rather than a song or a tune. IMO it should be listened to and studied to be enjoyed. Music is power. "The Rite of Spring" caused riots for christsakes because it was so revolutionary. Dark Star transports the listener to a new space and a higher level. Again; revolutionary. So I could not agree with you more there is a huge difference between listening and hearing

Interesting question.
I love Dark Star. I've got shows where I only listen to the Dark Star.
So naturally I gotta list.
2/27/69
3/1/69
4/22/69
2/13/70
10/31/71
Most of the '72's but especially,
5/4/72
5/23/72
8/27/72
9/21/72
All of '73
2/24/74
6/23/74
9/10/74
10/18/74

Thats all I can manage right now....Thank you kindly

2/18/71 - The day I was born.

Nobody mentioned this show but it's exceptional I think. It's Darkstar > Wharf Rat > Darkstar. I don't care much for that Wharf Rat but there's a jam in Darkstar that is just amazing, very moody, intense and melodic, a sense of deep longing coming through Jerry.

This 5-24-70 Newcastle-Under-Lyme Dark Star is really doing it for me right now.

I said Just Exactly Perfect....fantastic song....it is almost "proof" of the Dead's being unlike anything or anyone else. Personally I'm a huge fan of the one from 10/25/73, even if there is a nasty cut right in the MIDDLE of the mind-crushing, end of the world finale.....

I love Dark Star.
To me it embodies the whole jazzy, spacey improv thing that the Dead did like no other.
Most versions post 1974 seem to underwhelm me.
10/26/89 is a great one.
3/29/90 is pretty good, but once you remove the novelty of the horn, it loses some of its luster.
Just my $0.02.

Welcome Stuart!
I hear ya on those 74 versions. Although a few (10/18 and 2/24) are pretty good.
My favorites are in 72 - 4/8, 8/27, 9/21 and 10/18. Also 1970 is a strong year for DS.

Exactly perfect. I love it, and the spacier the better for me. If I want structure I'll listen to Big River. That song was the Dead's vehicle for free jazz exploration at a time when that genre was making giant leaps (see Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman). It's what makes the Dead the Dead. The ability to stretch and morph a simple song structure into uncharted chaos while still maintaining that essential togetherness as a band. Dark Star was without a doubt the most revolutionary thing that the Dead did as a rock band.

That said, most of the post-74 Stars are pretty weak. 7-12-90 is an exception. That surprise encore at the Greek in 84 was a train wreck from what I remember of it. No wonder they didn't play it much in the 80s.

I said underrated, for Koch and Duderino lowball it and they are prominent, vocal members of the deadhead community who have the ear of the young. Dark Star is the greatest thing the Dead did, except maybe Althea.
