I have decided that 2/15/73 is my favorite Eyes of the World. I only got one chance to see the Dead, in 2003 at Float-Rite Park in Somerset, WI, great show, they played this song.

My favorite Dead tune

2/9/73 - the first one, pretty hot!

11/11/73 out of MLB Jam into China Doll

11/5/79 - wow

8/29/83 at warp speed

10/31/83 - see above plus special guest

3/29/90 w Marsalis

6/17/91 - not the best, but a 1st set opener! The rest of the show lives up to this early standard setter.

10/14/83
3/20/91 2nd set opener, sweet 20 minute jamfest>Foolish

Favorite "Eyes Of The World" at least recently ;
6/18/74 Louisville..
I do believe Jerry plays a couple riffs from "My Old Kentucky Home"
during the brake in "Promise Land."
(Or was it "BIODL"?)

For a bare-bones, in-your-face, fasten-your-seatbelt version of Eyes, hear:

06-14-80 Spokane, WA

Stylistically and groovatically, my favorite is still:

10-31-83 Marin County

Favorite Eyes-Jam:

08-12-79 Red Rocks

Alternate intro:

05-09-81 Nassau; 04-18-82 Hartford

Unique and classic:

02-09-73 Roscoe Maples - the first ever and one of the best.

Swami recently told me the 11/29/79 is a great one with an Orbital Jam to finish it off. I haven't heard it yet, but I will take his word for it. He says it beats 11/5/79, which is a pretty tough act to follow.

Gopher showed me the way on 6/4/78, it has a really great Eyes culminating in some sick fanning at about the six minute mark, very strong Jerry vocals too to go with the rest.

I don't really have a favorite Eyes....can I still post at this site?

As a whole I do prefer the K and D era Eyes'.

Yes, as long as you change your signature line to...
Help me find a favorite Eyes of the World, preferably one without fanning.

2/26/77 Swing Auditorium with sweet bass and bass solo, but I will take the fanning one over that any day of the week.

My favorite Eyes is the one on 1/28/87, legitimately one of the worst shows ever. Comes out of an exteremely short jam/space, they wanted to get the show over..)
Right when Jerry comes in for the vocals, he sneezes or has a hairball caught in his throat. Makes me laugh every time Laughing it then goes on for 6 1/2 average minutes..
OK, that was a joke. A legitimately great Eyes is 9/12/81 Greek. Clocks in a 19 minutes, but at around 11-12 minutes they pretty much leave the outro structure and launch into some serious improv.

Despite the vocal flubs, that Shakedown has some nice jamming. BCE lossless snobs can lick my salty balls. Twisted Evil

This is one of my favorite shows ever, definitely in my top 5 of all time. The first time I heard it I was expecting yet another early '80s Eyes played at breakneck speed with no real standout solos... boy was I wrong, thankfully. Very Happy This one features some of the most lyrical and soulful phrasing I've yet heard by Jerry on this tune.

BTW, what does everyone mean by "fanning"? Like windmilling Pete Townshend-style? Confused

Fanning - When Jerry or Bobby play strings at lightning speed to create a 'blurry' sound. Listen to any Music Never Stopped from '78 or '79 for an example.

I'm going to go with the unsung 9/2/78 Giants Stadium EYES!! Tremendous Jerry roll ( fanning), meaty solos, and a nice smooth transition into drums that seems like it really belongs there and isn't just there to go into drums. The first set is blah, the drums>Sgr.Mags. hose job to end the set is blah. The encore is blah, and the only soundboard portion of the show is Scarlet>Fire, Estimated> EYES.drums. Appearently they shot their load early, the rest of the show.....eh...That is really all you need. It's that fucking good. Try it out and let me know how ya'll like it. I have always dug this portion and see it get no love anywhere ( because the rest of the show, frank;y, sucks!) But oh what a good 50 or so minutes it is n the middle.

Also,I've always had a huge hard-on for the Englishtown Eyes as well. Just a great version and great show. You can tell they were having a good time that day. Sometimes the lazy 77-78 Eyes just hit you exactly perfect. I find myself going to those time and time again.

lucas - FYI at that Giants 78 show the reason they played one song after space was reportedly that Jerry was smoking a joint backstage and a security guard told him to put it out and after some hassling, he did. Apparently it pissed him off so they came out and did one song. Kinda lame..other than that, I think the whole show is strong - some techinal problems with Jack Straw, but once that is taken care of, they smoke IMO.

I'm listening to 12/7/79 Eyes. Really nice version and a great SBD with Phil booming. Perfect tranisition into Sailor.

Minglewood Blues, Tennessee Jed, Me & My Uncle-> Big River, Don't Ease Me In-> El Paso, Big Railroad Blues, Easy To Love You-> It's All Over Now, Althea, The Music Never Stopped
China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Eyes Of The World-> Lost Sailor-> Saint Of Circumstance-> Drums-> Wharf Rat-> Around & Around-> Johnny B. Goode, E: U.S. Blues

Thanks for the info. Yeah, definatly seems like something went awry during Drums. There is just such a difference after they get back. Wasn't Wille Nelson an opening act for that? That would have been quite the smoke out back stage there.

Very Happy Didn't realize just how good 11/11/73 was until I found an uncut version. Also a fan of 6/26/76 (one of those Dicks Picks) and 3/31/91 (better than anything they will play in Greensboro this Spring)

If I am not mistaken, I believe the 3/31/91 is the longest one they ever played when you omit tuning, etc.

I believe that is the case...but I may need to hear that one again tonight Very Happy Glad I have an understanding girlfriend.

And I just remembered, I was turned onto the Eyes from 9-29-94 not too long ago. A very nice late 90s rendition.

I want to say 10/17/94 has a pretty long one too... can't remember for sure, but it might rival the 91 in length.
Then you have the 73 versions, all pretty long.

My favorite still might be 11/5/79... oodles of noodles... that one is also right up there in terms of length. It also has the skillz to pay the billz!

In my trip back to '73 and '74, I have found Eyes again. I was burnt on it for a while but it has come back into my life with a vengance. Here are my '73-'74 picks for Eyes....

2/15/73 - Dane County(Agreed on this one for sure)

5/26/73 - Kezar Stadium(The show I am presently wearing ut right now. Maybe I am biased at the present moment but I think this is the best I have ever heard)

8/1/73 - Roosevelt Stadium

10/19/73 DP 19(This one I love oh so much as well)

11/11/73 - Winterland

12/6/73 - Cleveland(DS>Eyes>Stella)

6/18/74 - Freedom Hall

8/6/74 - DP 31

9/11/74 - London

10/19/74 - GD Movie(Love the little bit o' reverb that is present on the whole soundtrack).

That "slipknot" jamming is really Stronger Than Dirt.. That jam can be heard by itself in 76, so you'd have to leave the 80s to hear it... big no-no there

slow = boring
medium = depends on the performance, can be interesting

The one on 'Wake Of The Flood' is a real dirge for me (mind you I feel that way about the entire album)...
Waits for mob with pitchforks and torches to assemble Smile

I prefer the medium to fast ones.
I know I keep driveling on about this show, but the 1979/10/25 'Eyes Of The World' is totally, totally fabby.

Skobud mentioned it in a list, but the version from 9/11/74 is worth repeating. This 20 minute monster features a 5 minute jam as both the intro and the outro. I just "discovered" it yesterday and am now trying to figure out why they left it off the official release. Crazy.

A nice, well jammed out Eyes is 3/27/86. Yes, 1986 people.

Well, to each their own, I guess. It's a good example of a "blitz" Eyes with that wacky Eighties-style up-tempo delivery. The song itself is distinguished mostly by a longer than average intro (for the era) of about a minute, and a five-minute outro jam that leads into other jamming. The lyrics, though really get stomped on by the rapid delivery. For comparison: a 'normal tempo' Eyes takes about 75 seconds to get through a verse; in this version they blast through each verse in 55 seconds or less. At that tempo it's kind of hard for Garcia's signature style to come shining through.

Let's remember that in this case, the context of 86 is important... when many eyes were clocking in at under 7 minutes!!! YIKES!!!

Now that you've dragged me into listening to '86 material, check out the Eyes from 3/20/86. Far superior to 3/27 (slower tempo, better recording, more satisfying experience Very Happy ). Still not saying much, but none-the-less, it's a good palate-freshener after listening to 3/27.

No visual aide for being dragged kicking and screaming into 1986?

Indeed! A very unique version because it is super-spacey

Yes! That's a great one and that segue is unmatched. June was a good month for Eyes. I also love
6/8/74 - the jam kinda unravels (this is the one that breaks off with Phil announcing that they're out of tune), but Jerry's solo before the last verse is 1974 Eyes perfection.
6/18/74 - the textbook version for me. Dig how Billy drops in that poppin' beat at the start.
6/30/74 - looser and jammier, with a few minutes of teasing in the preceding space jam, and then 5-6 more minutes of space to wrap it up, just Jerry and Keith (or is it Ned?) duetting. Beautiful.

Of coarse i second the 6/16 and 6/18, but i really like that intro jam and end space of 6/30, thats just classic 74. Beautiful intro jam

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Dicks Picks...thanks to a "favor" somebody here did me...I really dig DP18, I think the Eyes is from 2-5-78, that has a 5 minute intro and is dope. Also dig DP6, very very long version from 1983.
