I know! I had a whole post put together about how the missing fall 1970 reels were finally found under a roadie's cat's litter box, but if no one gives a crap anymore, then why bother? Confused Wink

The plant I am working at is getting shut down in a couple of weeks and I will be losing my job, so while I am pursuing other opportunities while on unemployment (don't feel bad for me, I am cautiously optimistic,) I was thinking of writing a fictional book on the legendary Poynette "Wisconsin Woodstock" show from 1970. It's too bad the soundboards of that one disappeared. There are pictures of it, I posted something a while ago about it in the Pigpen era section, links from a Wisconsin historical magazine.
Fillmoreeast, do you have any more thoughts on the biker-GD connection from the old days? I mean, I read Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson and some other stuff, but there seem to have been a lot of early biker Deadheads from reading stuff on the days of yore, that one Academy of Music show you saw in 72 you posted something about the bikers there if I remember right, I think Hell's Angels royalty was involved.

Yeah they did a benefit show during the late March 72 run at the Academy of Music. I had a run-in with one of them. They were there every night. I believe the actual benefit show was 3/25 if memory serves. Anyway I'm 18 and this is only my 2nd run of shows. I'm trippin' my brains out and along comes an angel. He had to be six foot eight and 300 plus pounds. He eyes my boda bag and says "I want your bag, I'll give you a buck for it.
I reply. "Aw c'mon man my brother got this for me in Spain."
"Give me the fuckin' bag man." Who am I to argue? I give him the bag and he gives me a dollar. The bag was full of cheap wine and 50 barrels of orange sunshine. As I'm putting th dollar in my pocket he had unscrewed the top of the bag and was guzzling most of the contents into his mouth Shocked Exclamation I got the [CENSORED] outta there toot sweet! I didn't dose him on purpose. I just didn't get the chance to tell him. On the way out of the show I saw him sitting in the lobby staring at his hands. By the way the Academy was a great place to see the boys. Old movie theatre. Hot , humid and funky. They had a mirror ball hanging from the ceiling and would point a spot light on it when they would go deep into space. I remember Pig singing Big Boss Man (God that song was tailor made for him) and Next Time You See Me. Every time he got to the line..."Ya' know ya' lied cheated Uh Oh! for so long the audience would all sing that part of the tune, the guy had the crowd with him all the way. The Angels loved him. Anyway that was my only experience with those guys, and that was plenty! bLiving now in No. Ca. I see them all the time and never any problems. They have been stereotyped so badly over the years that alot folks just make assumptions.

Well, there have definitely been tons of illegal activity, of a violent nature, that the "Angels" have done... so it's not a completely baseless stigma.

Anyhow, so, that guy drank all the wine, which was laced with 50 tabs? Is that what you are saying???

Well, yeah, the Hell's Angels are obviously a somewhat shady organization, it is probably associated with crime sort of like the Mafia. Kochman you should read that Hunter S. Thompson book, it isn't perfect but there is enough brilliance there to make it one of HSTs two or three best books and I think you would enjoy it.
Awesome story Fillmoreeast, thanks! Very Happy
I have heard a couple stories over the years involving the consumption of quantity of acid by people I had no reason to disbelieve, and it usually involved tripping balls for a couple of days.

Correct. Although my friends and I drank our share before I "sold" it to him, and he may have shared some with his buddies. Nevertheless the swig I saw him take was certainly not your average dose.

Serves the fucker right!

When I was in my senior year of high school, a bunch of us went up to Bass Lake in the Sierras, a couple hours south of you fillmoreeast, to camp and party Memorial Day weekend. Little did we know that Hells Angels had an annual gathering there themselves on this weekend. They screwed with us nonstop, stole a lot of our booze and other things in similar fashion to the boda bag "sale."

One of my buddies wanted to actually shoot one of them and we had to hold him down and take his 357 away.

Mongols are much worse though...

Yes, you don't want to run into mongols!

It does serve the biker right, that's classic! Haha... good stuff... except he probably went psycho and ended up committing some henois act which led to the stereotyping of Hell's Angels as a result... haha

I have Ginsberg's book of poems somewhere but I don't know where it is, however I am pretty sure this one I copied and pasted from a poem site is correct.

First Party At Ken Kesey's With Hell's Angels

Cool black night thru redwoods
cars parked outside in shade
behind the gate, stars dim above
the ravine, a fire burning by the side
porch and a few tired souls hunched over
in black leather jackets. In the huge
wooden house, a yellow chandelier
at 3 A.M. the blast of loudspeakers
hi-fi Rolling Stones Ray Charles Beatles
Jumping Joe Jackson and twenty youths
dancing to the vibration thru the floor,
a little weed in the bathroom, girls in scarlet
tights, one muscular smooth skinned man
sweating dancing for hours, beer cans
bent littering the yard, a hanged man
sculpture dangling from a high creek branch,
children sleeping softly in their bedroom bunks.
And 4 police cars parked outside the painted
gate, red lights revolving in the leaves.

December 1965

Allen Ginsberg
