Hmmmm...
Throwin Stones would have to be the top. Great song, great lyrics, killer jam..
2nd would be Stranger.
3rd would be Althea
then:
Saint, Touch, Bama....
a slew of good covers too - Gimme Some Lovin, Mr F., Satisfaction...

Yeah, that'a a tough one for sure. A definite for Althea. SOTM Could be my favorite ballad. Touch of Gray--Foolish Heart. Perhaps one of the Dead's most underrated tunes Built to Last. Really dig that song. There's just too many to mention.

Have you heard the Little Light from 10/25/89? It is pretty damn solid. 7/10/89 has a nice one too, though more mellow...

Dude, please help me remember. Was that the year that the skies just opened up and pissed rain for THE WHOLE DAY? If it was, then it was truly a miracle I'm alive because I vaguely remember having to drive through an ocean of water on some Mass highway, without being able to see, and hydroplaining sideways for a good part of the trip home that night. Of course, that could have been somewhere else but I think it was Woostaa!

I dont remember it raining that run. Of course I was on lots of drugs the whole time...I recall typical early April New England weather - a little chilly, grey...maybe a little sun here and there. Worst rain I remember was Merriweather 83, Saratoga 84 - yikes!!! Daytime 7/2/87 and 7/12/90

Two things just struck me...

1) I never answered this...
2) My avatar seems to have disappeared?!

As for number 1... I am going to go with...

For number 2, I have to go find another... dammit.

I always thought it was cool that many, many years ago a man in this band sang the words "If i knew the way, i would take you home." And all these years later there was this man in this band singing "I Will Take You Home!"

But the best in that era, maybe Gentlemen Start Your Engines!

JOKING?!

Keep in mind, my friend, that this is serious business to most of us losers around here; we are, after all, wasting our precious lives debating these absurd issues. Have a little respect. Laughing

Althea seems the best, Foolish Heart was great, When Push Comes to Shove is underrated. If we were including Vince it would be harder, Wave to the Wind and Eternity are two of the best Dead songs ever...

...maybe not. But all four Garcia tunes from the Vince era are great, although Liberty doesn't seem to be liked by all for some reason...I could never figure out what was wrong with it.

I would like to add Bob Star to the list of best tunes born in the era of Brent. Sure Little Star was only played 3 times all in 83, and it seemed more of a The Other One remix than a real new tune. I still love that tune.

Lovers we got to be, lovers we are.
I just wanna be one of those little stars
All you gotta do is hang up there and shine.........
Hang up there and shine

It is interesting that the only stand alone Bob Star was 4-15-83. The other two were followed by TOO. 4-16-83 an 6-20-83

Listening to it right now, defiantly in my top 5 Picassos. 6/20/92 is probably my favorite post Brent version. In the era I love 3/30/90 and 10/16/89.

Jerry Tune-Foolish Heart
Bobby Tune-Feel Like A Stranger
Brent Tune-Blow Away

I prefer a couple of other Brent tunes in this category, like Gentlemen Start Your Engines and Tons of Steel, but they were not performed enough to really get a lot of mileage out of them. Blow Away found those sturdy legs in the fall of '89 and stayed strong until the end, which is why I picked it.

this is nearly impossible...i'll divide into originals and covers

originals:
Throwing Stones: some people find Bob's vocalizing often somewhat cheesy on
this song, but it's such a perfect post D/S song...I love hearing the beginning notes coming out of the ashes of a beautiful Jerry ballad
Standing on the Moon: the end "I'd rather be with you" section is so emotional. On the best versions of this song (check out 9/16/90) Jerry really pours his heart out.
Feel Like a Stranger: I love it when shows open with Stranger. A huge jam right out of the gates.

covers:

Let the Good Times Roll: this song is such a warm, inviting way to start concerts.
Maggie's Farm: I've always loved songs with multiple vocalists. And Bobby usually just doesn't overdo the vocals like he's known to do on other Dylan covers, namely Watchtower.
Dear Mr. Fantasy: My favorite Brent-sung song in the GD canon. Just listen to 7/12/90's version, it's fantastic.

Great song, I hope you've heard 7/6/90. Theres a whole post on it somewhere here, but this version made me fall in love with the song

Hell yeah, great one! Followed by my probable favorite Gone>Jam that I can't stop mentioning.
I prefer pre-drums SOTMs.
