Which suits your liking the best? Not that there was really a "bad time" for a China/Rider IMO.

Examples of good ones in respective slots:

Ending Set One: 05-16-80 Nassau
Opening Set Two: 07-18-90 Deer Creek
2nd Song Set Two: 04-14-85 Irvine Meadows (Miracle-China-Rider)
Other: 07-21-84 Ventura Fairgrounds (mid 1st Set: C/R-LL Rain-MightAsWell)

Of course there are so many for each category.

Do you have a show date in mind when this occurred?

It always crushed as a 1st set closer. The ones I saw:
12/9/81 Apocalyptic intensity
3/13/82
9/4/83
9/7/83
9/10/83 Fantastically uptempo!

The ultimate, for me, was a 1st set closer of China-Rider and a 2nd set opener of Scarlet-Fire. JERRY!! Laughing

As it turns out (I just did the research), 9/10/83 - Santa Fe, is the end of China-Rider being a regular 1st set closer. After that they play it as a closer only a handful of times:
2/18/85 Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland CA
3/28/85 Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale NY
4/28/85 Frost Amphitheatre - Stanford University Palo Alto CA
5/4/86 Cal Expo Amphitheatre Sacramento CA
6/21/86 Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley CA
1/30/87 San Francisco Civic Center San Francisco CA
5/6/89 Frost Amphitheatre - Stanford University Palo Alto CA

Show opener - 11/24/79
2nd set opener - 2/26/81
First set ender - 5/12/80
Misc - 12/29/77 - 6th song in the 2nd set (pre-drums)

I like it best opening up set 2.

I liked it at the end of the 1st set, because it left potential for more jammers in the 2nd set still, like how Zephyr mentioned S>F to open the 2nd...

I voted Opening Set 2 here - mostly because I really enjoy the pre-set tuneups that lead into the China intro.

"Modern era" means post-1980?

I'm happy with a China>Rider anywhere, but I dig the effect of them opening the 2nd set with something else, then rolling on into China Cat. It was like, "ok, now we're warmed up, let's get this show on the road!"

For those seeking non-opener 2nd set China-Riders, here's a compendium from its return at 12/29/77 onward. If China Cat is the 2nd song I just list the preceding song; if it gets placed deeper in the set I list all songs up to drums.

12/29/77 Bertha > Good Lovin'; Roses; Sunrise; Playin' > C-R > China Doll >Playin' jam > Drums
2/11/79 Samson
4/1/80 Stranger
6/13/80 LIG
8/16/80 CC Rider
8/19/80 Rooster
8/24/80 Samson, Ship, Stranger, C-R > Drums
11/26/80 Cold Rain, Samson C-R, Estimated > Eyes
8/14/81 Might As Well, Samson, Ship Of Fools, Playin' > C-R > Drums
7/17/82 Playiní
6/22/83 Bucket
8/21/83 Samson
3/28/84 Oh Babe, It Ainít No Lie, Bucket, C-R, Playiní > Donít Need Love
7/15/84 Do It In The Road
4/14/85 Miracle
6/25/85 Gimme Some Lovin'
8/24/85 Stranger
9/22/87 Gimme Some Lovin'
6/30/88 Green Onions
12/10/89 Jack Straw
12/30/89 Jack Straw
3/26/90 Built To Last; Victim > C-R > Smarter > Drums
6/8/90 Uncle Johnís Band
9/20/90 Truckiní
3/24/91 Samson
6/16/91 Jack Straw ; Crazy Fingers ; C-R > Drums
12/18/93 Way to go Home
8/4/94 Picasso Moon

Modern Era starting in late-1978 when Drumz/Space became a part of every 2nd Set.

I too like the idea of C>R ending Set I because of the possibilities left for Set II. And, no matter how great Deal is, change is always good at the end of Set I.

My first show 11/8/79 I saw it as a mid-1st set tune. Cool
I voted 1st set ender
I echo Zeph - 12/9/81 is balls out insanity.
They did some nice China Riders during the Spring 83 tour to end 1st sets.

3/9/81 is a great 2nd set opener
Any China Riders from Summer or Fall 83.....

Yes, and it also jacked up the intensity level in many cases, which often carried over to the next set.
