Sometimes the boys would just play a certain song or songs better than any other year... so, I was thinking, what are the best examples? Can we fill out the entire 30 years? I doubt that, but... there can be some great examples... I have filled in a couple to start with...

1971 - Year of Not Fading Away Down The Road
1972 - Year the Bus Came By

1978 - Year of the Egyptian

1982 - ________
1983 - Kind of a Big Deal Year
1984 - ________ S>F? Slipknot?
1985 - ________
1986 - ________
1987 - ________

Some nice additions here... some where clear cut or voted on by two folks right out of the gate, so I added them...

Some I put up just waiting to be seconded, because I don't really know (like 76 Fingers... I am not sure, is that the best year? I am going to claim ignorance on this one)...

Some I don't think really measure up... but since that is arbitrary, speak up and maybe we can come to a concensus (the trap is set Twisted Evil , just kidding).
Eyes in 74? S>F 84? Bird Song 90? I think we can make cases for these years, and others, so let's hear some reasoning/examples...
74 PITB? I disagree, but what do others here think?
I almost thing 74 should just be the Year of the Jam... is this going to far?

Some I just think are pretty off base... like...
1977 being the best year for Sugaree... I don't see it, when the best one is not even in that year...
1977 Minglewood? No way, when they rearranged this in the early 80s is was substantially better as a result...

Haha, I would joke that there is no best Lovelight and Hard 2 Handle, but that's just me...

I would say 77 was consistently the best year for Sugaree. 79 maybe.

Hmmm...good point, the doodly Dew Dews were amazing from that year.
I personally like 10/17/83 better as a Sugaree, and 10/16/77..but that is my opinion..

So, I know you also like the 88 Dews... But you would agree with me that the 77 Dews are better, right?
Shall we call 77 year of the Dew? Anyone?

Oh, without a doubt. 88 was a great Dew year but so was 84, but neither compare to 77. 73 and 72 might give it a run for the money.. 2/27, 4/27, 5/8, 5/22 and 6/7/77 are "da bomb". Any I left out? And why did they dump it in the Fall?
Then what is the year of the Sugaree ? Major song that should not be left out.

A few more suggestions:
82 - Baby Blue.
83 Wharf Rat
87 - Touch (natch)

1972 Other One, Dark Star, Truckin, Dew
1973 Here Comes Sunshine, China>Rider
1974 Sorry Koch...it's ALL about the Playin this year. Eyes might win this year too. Stella Blue, Big River
1976 Comes A Time, Wheel
1977 Help>Slip> Frank, Sugaree, 1/2 Step
1978 Peggy O, Scarlet>Fire( close with 79 ), Around and Around, Black Peter
1979 Passenger

I won't get into the 80's I'll just let you experts go ahead and have it.

Best Shakedowns are definately in theis era as well as Estimated>Eyes.

No Caution yet? I'd say 68 (I'm thinking mainly of 5/18), but I'm not as well-versed in 69 as I should be.

1969 Cryptical
1970 NFA, Dancing in the Street
1971 NFA>GDTRFB>NFA, Good Lovin
1972 Dark Star, Other One, Greatest Story Ever Told
1973 Playin'
1974 Eyes
1976 The Wheel

I pick an 80's year for China>Rider, though I can't think of which...

Some of those 1970 standalone NFA's (2/11, 2/14, 6/24, 7/11, 9/20, and 11/10 all come to mind) are unmatched by any others, whereas the NFA>GDTRFB>NFA combos from 71-72 are a different beast. Ditto with Dancing in the Streets -- I love the 77-79 disco monsters, but so many of the 1970 versions reach transcendence in a way that the later ones just can't manage. imho, the Playin's from 73 are my ideal bridge between the mighty-yet-kinda-same-sounding 72 versions and the 74 intense-but-sometimes-too-intense coked-out whammies. And as unbelievable as most '73 Dark Stars are, there are some from that year can occasionally drift towards the duller side of "dreamy", whereas '72 was consistently more powerful.

You know, I was thinking about this... are we taking the wrong approach here?
Should we be picking the song first, and then the year?

Perhaps that's how we should do it? Or should that be next?
Seems like it would be a lost less arbitrary (or maybe not)...

Just a thought, but I think we should probably eliminate all of the songs that saw limited lifespans in a single year, such as World To Give (78), Mission In The Rain (76), Clementie (68). I'm sorry for those who have posted in that vein, but it seems kind of pointless to illuminate the obvious.

Yeah, this is a good point...

I think we need to make it not just the best year of the best song... but the song that was superior not only in it's own history, but to all others played that year.

Hence, 93 TS, pretty much it's best year, and really the best song of all songs of the year.

Starts to get pretty arbitrary, but it's fun, so, why not?

71 was assigned... 80 unassigned, because is it the year of the Saint? Or the Prophet?

Or, could we combine them and say it is the "Holy Year"?

74 could easily be playing in the band. Of course some people (Including myself) Don't like when playing is super stretched out and spacey. But still it became a massive show peace in 74.

No way... the 80s versions blow these out of the water, specifically in 1983... 10/21/83 for example.

There have been a lot of suggestions for 1971, you guys have to narrow it down as it is not really my area of expertise by any means.

@ Gopher, nice big list! Anyone else want to second some of those? I am thinking I don't really know 82 enough for the UJB, but I know in 84 there are definitely some better ones, and also in 89...
78 S>F anyone? This is possible, if not, I think TMNS is probably the winner.
I was also thinking 92 for Foolish, anyone?
88 Bucket?

It doesn't have to be, but a quick head to head comparison easily shows that 71 Big RR Blues aren't not the best of the best as far as the song goes.

Again, we hit the fatal flaw of 71 compared to other years... no jamming.
In 83, for example, and other years, there are definitely longer (and Jerry intense) jams.

If you can find a 71 Big RR better than the 10/21/83 version, let me know, I'll give it a spin.

68 has been deemed the year of the Potato...

75's best song was probably Slipknot... however, this is more focused on the best year that a song was played than vice versa...
