I am pretty sure if you were talking to another deadhead and you heard 9/19/70 mentioned the first thing that comes to your head is "Hey baby you want to FUCK!!!" "Pigpen did you just say fuck?" For Lovelight it was a good one that night. Very energetic to say the least. But its the Dark Star that I want to bring into focus here at the moment.

After the really spacey part of the song, around the 14:30 time mark, I believe Garcia starts to tease Let's Spend The Night Together. This happens around the 15 minute mark for a second. Then it fades away from some nice jamming but it comes back strong at 20:30 time mark. Either way I was wondering if this just me or if that really is there?

HOLY COW!!!...listen i have been listening to this band for going on 25 yrs. and a show like this has always been my dream...this rivals any classic show...binghampton..or....2.13.70. ...wow..it blows my head off...the dark star is elegant and delicate..quiet and minimal but full of weird ambience...and the raunchy bits are out of control!!..and the sound quality is pristine....and bobby...what the fuck??...he is going toe to toe with garcia....this is one for the ages for sure...why this hasn't made the grade for a official release i don't know ..but i am basking in it's glory right now ...unbelievable!

The only reason I could think of this not being released is the quality. There is only a section of the show that is sbd. It starts with Darkstar and goes to Lovelight. There was no encore that night either. Which brings up another interesting point. Do you think after they got off the stage they thought they couldn't do anything else after that? I know I have read the "real" reason just something for discussion. When ever I go back to the archive page with this show on it I will post the real reason. Bobby was all over it that night. Interesting to think he might have been playing for his job. It was just 3 months later that Mickey and Hartbeats were billed or was it David and the Dorks. Either way it was the Dead without Bobby and Pig. Also, this show could have been one of the breaking points for Garcia and Lesh with Pig. He does seem drunk whenever he blurts out the "F" word. I am not positive on that though. Just some thoughts I have of that era of the Dead.

The other reason I can think of for stellar shows not being official releases is actually split into two parts...
1) There are so damn many stellar shows
2) GDP has about zero business acumen

This show is one of my all time favorites. It's not necessarily a show for newbies, but those with a little knowledge and a willingness to dive in and explore, like the musicians themselves, will really love it. Being very similar length and content to DP2 (10/31/71), I kind of wish this one had been chosen over DP2, if only to turn more people on the the merits of this little gem. I'm clearly not alone on this one, as I have both a SBD and the Matrix another kind listener created as a testament to its charms. I highly recommend it!!

Another reason for its non-release is that it may not be in the Vault. I think that all of the sbd sources for the Sept 70 Fillmore East shows are from reels that were made in secret by the the Fillmore stage crew, not by the GD crew, and that the masters have been MIA for a long time. I believe that the circulating tapes are a couple generations removed from those masters, hence the generally so-so quality.

Or maybe it's the fact that Mickey's guiro is louder than everything else in the mix. Every time I listen to the matrix, I always wonder how many dosed heads were wigging out on that overpoweringly loud scratchy sound Smile

Nick I did not know that about the reels....Ive always loved this show, and it features Bobby's heaviest work from '70 IMO....This one I have to listen to not on my Home system, in other words the car or iPOD......The big speakers amplify the problems in the mix like tenfold......Anyways, cheers to this show for sure!

Thought I might as well bring this back to the original question. I just listened to it and I hear what you are saying. Jerry obviously knew about this song as he played it well in late 75 with Hopkins. However, I do not think it is really there. It just seems part of the feeling groovy jam they did so often with Dark Star in 70.
