So Koch posted this question and I thought it was a great one because the change in Eyes, for me, was not a good one. I always thought the song sounded better with a slower tempo and a little more jazzed out with Kieth influencing it heavily. That is not to say there are not great latter era versions, but I think the last great one that suits my taste was 10/19/74. Again that is just me, but I believe the song was written, and polished as a spacey jazz influenced jam vehicle. Now, on to the change…

So, the last performance of ’74 was the 10/20 show. I think 10/19 blows that one away, but the tempo remains a slower, but not too slow pace. Jazzed out with Billy and Phil holding it down.

Next comes 8/13/75 which is a thing of beauty. It is faster, but not too much faster. This one sounds more like a rock and roll song than a spacey jazz number. I think there is an obvious change in pace here compared to 10/20/74. I love this one, and wish it never really went quicker than this.

The following performance is completely different from the jump. I don’t know if Jerry is feeding off the energy of the crowd(due to the fact they just played Stephen) or what….This one start out furiously, slows a little during the opening jam, and then takes off never to be found again. I think is where the real change is, and it is fast as hell. The jamming and Jerry’s licks are phenomenal, but I prefer the earlier versions. So, in essence 6/9/76 is where the real change in Eyes takes place. Please comment on your take, as this one is off the top of my head.

I enjoy the slower jazzier versions as well. There are a few of the faster one's that I enjoy...but there are some that are so fast it sounds like the band's mindset was let's finish this fuckin' song and take a break so we can do more blow!

I would tend to agree that the pre-hiatus versions of Eyes are superior than what came later, though I enjoy those versions too. Let's not forget that they slowed it down again in 1990. I believe the first of these was 3/25/90 at the Knick, though the one people usually think of was four days later with Branford at Nassau. It's my opinion that slowing the tempo down again reinvigorated the song and made it into a second set showpiece again.

Excellent point, and I do like the slowed down 90's versions.

Yes, my question focused on when the changes took place, not how people felt about it...
9/7/76...
Interesting.

There was a definite faster push even in the the 80s, within the faster versions... 83 has some blistering eyes.
As for rushing to get it over with... ummm... they played it faster, sure, but it also featured prime Jerry jamming and noodling, so it was well worth it! The same amount of notes in 1/2 the time...
Now, there were some abortive attempts, primarily in pre-coma 86, where Jerry just phoned it in at 6 minutes or so... painful.
But then back to the slower versions in the 90s.

My rough timeline is something like this...
Pre-Retirement = base speed
Post-Retirement = double time
83? = triple time
Post-Coma = double time
90 and beyond = base speed

Some of the Spring and Summer 85 versions are ridiculously fast.
4/1/85, 4/27/85 and 6/27/85 come to mind. 4/1 might be the worst offender.

I just relistened to 10/20/74 and 6/9/76....It almost like 2 different songs. Jerry sounds like he is shot out of a cannon right from the jump of 6/9/76.

Duder- Im gonna check out 4/1/85 as that was gonna be my next question. What is the fastest Eyes?

EDIT: OK, 4/1/85 is by far the fastest Eyes I have ever heard....It sounds like Jerry cant even sing fast enough to keep up with his own playing.....I remember hearing a Midnight Moonlight from JGB that sounded very similar, a Tony Montana fueled rendition Shocked

9/2/78 features a rare, very tasty slow eyes.

Just like FOTD and TLEO, slower the better!

This is a great show all around... I can't imagine some of the stories that must come out of GD shows that take place in Las Vegas!!!

Listened to 6/21/83 Estimated>Eyes yesterday. Medium paced, almost relaxed version, which was not the not the norm for that time. Also features a nice intro, some meaty jamming and a sweet outro from Jer
