Went to see Steely Dan when they hit Clearwater.

I have to say, it was great. Seriously, I know I enjoy on some level most any live musical performance, but not since the GD has the music effected me like theirs did.

They had moments, not straight through, but moments of sheer genius. I was very impressed.

Used to be a big fan,but kind of forgot about them. Maybe it's time to get back into them. Very different sound and unique style. How can you not like a band who got their name from a William Burroughs novel? Gonnna start digging through my CDs I know I have a few. Any recommendations you can think of off hand?

Nice dog! I have a Golden too. She's just a puppy though.

I recommend Pretzel Logic to start out with something a little more recent you may not have heard, or Two Against Nature.

SO, just so you all know, there is a good amount of their live material out on demonoid, thepiratebay... I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.

Here is a picture of the waiting list I have for music (I have a similar looking list for books)...

"My Old School" is my favorite.

Just saw Steely in Chi-town on Aug 16 and they rocked! Phenomenal drummer, outstanding sax and trombone section, good guitar, 70s-style keys, with 3 afro females on vocals for added flayva.

I don't have the opportunity to see concerts that often, but based on what you and the Captain have said perhaps I should make an effort to see the Dan. It's good to know that Donald and Walter are still out there doing it.

I saw the mighty Dan in 1974 when they played the Rainbow in London.
They are one of the best bands I have ever seen.

I love them as much as the Dead (who I have never seen live)
Crying or Very sad
Their music is very different, but very fabbo Cool

Here is my choice of essential Steely Dan albums:

    1 Aja
    2 Royal Scam
    3 Pretzel Logic

Donald Fagen's solo album 'The Nightfly' is very good too.

Hurrah !

Particularly of note is Howard Wright's chord and tab site which includes a brilliant explanation of the Mu Major chord. It's well worth a visit if you play:

Kid Charlemagne is about chemist and sound man Bear (Owsley Stanley).

Although the lyrics are, at first glance, typically oblique and allusive, writers Walter Becker and Donald Fagen have stated that it was loosely inspired by the exploits of the infamous 1960s San Francisco-based LSD chemist Owsley Stanley
although it conflates the core story with numerous other images of the Sixties. This is evident in the following lines:

On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your Technicolor motor home

The first two lines draw on the fact that Owsley's acid was famed for its purity, although the last line may be a reference to the famous psychedelic bus named Further, which was used by the Merry Pranksters, who were supplied their LSD by Owsley himself.

The lyric "You'd go to LA on a dare and you'd go it alone" alludes to a story in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test about a trip taken by chief Prankster Ken Kesey.

The final verse foreshadows Owsley's eventual bust:

Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get it all out of here
Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall know who you are

Owsley and another person were arrested after their car ran out of gas. According to an infamous story recounted by Walter Becker on VH1's Storytellers, Becker once informed a taxi cab driver in New York City that he was with the band Steely Dan. The cab driver remarked "Steely Dan - they had the stupidest lyric I ever heard in any song that ever has been written." Becker replied "You're kidding - what was that?" The cab driver responded with "Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car".

While the music played you worked by candel light.
Those San Fransisco nights.
You were the best in town.
Just by chance you crossed a diamond with a pearl,
Then turned it on the world.
That's when you turned your world around.
Did you feel like Jesus?
Did you realize that you were a champion in their eyes?

On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolour motorhome
Every A-frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You'd go to LA on a dare and you'd go it alone
Could you live forever
Could you see the day
Did you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away

Get along, Get along Kid Charlemagne.
Get along Kid Charlemagne.

Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those day-glo freaks who used to paint their face
They've joined the human race, some things will never change
Son you were mistaken
You are obsolete, look at all the white men on the street.

Get along, Get along Kid Charlemagne.
Get along Kid Charlemagne.

Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scales, just get it all out of here
Is there gas in the car ?
Yes there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall know who you are
Careful what you carry
Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes

Get along, Get along Kid Charlemagne.
Get along Kid Charlemagne.

Yes, I love Kid Charlamagne too. betwixt - I'm glad you shed light on the Owsley connection. A friend from SF told me that a long time ago and when I listened, it made sense, but other people have dismissed this analysis as "crazy talk"

Steely Dan is a totally unique contribution to American music. I still have the box set with all of their classic albums. Great Sunday afternoon listening.

I agree... Jazz fusion in its purest form.
