Encore: The Weight

This is the most underrated show of 1991. There is nothing not to like about this show. For me, it’s required listening.

The first half sets up the second in spectacular fashion. Fine versions of great songs, capped by the first Might as Well in quite a while. But the second set is where the action is. Eyes is mammoth. I would say it’s about as good as the much-celebrated version from Greensboro later in the month, and about as long. The real meat is the transition into Foolish. Spectacular stuff. The set just gets better and better after that. Foolish is a real treat too. Jerry, as usual, finding registers on the guitar that only he knows about. But while the Eyes>Foolish gets most of the attention, I think the Estimated > Gone is even better! A great performance. Post-space Other One> Wharf does not disappoint. So nice to get a couple of heavyweights in that slot. And a great drop from Wharf into Sugar. Three amazing pairings and an unusually strong first set set this apart from the average 91 shows.

Take a look. There’s not a weak song in the bunch. Great list, great energy and well-executed.

I, for one, will check this out based on your recommendation. I enjoy Spring 91, think its rock solid.

The guy at the end of the bar there looks pretty interested in you too, in case you were feeling lonely...

My favorite show of this run (I missed 3/17) Both sets are very satisfying. Vinnies tone is occasionally distracting, but rock solid 1st set and a jam fest in the 2nd. LOVE the Eyes>Foolish. After this I was really pumped up for the 3rd show - started off great- every tune was played to the hilt, but I have a problem with 6 song first sets. A nice Jack Straw or a Bobbytune>Deal to end, plus another song in Set 2 would have sent 3/21 over the top, but it was not to be.
