I used to think this was hard, until I took a couple of minutes to figure it out. Here is all that you have to do, really:

Step 1 - The Bit Torrent Agent
1) Download your bit torrent agent... google the one you want to use, there are many. I use "utorrent", it is pretty light on space that it consumes.
2) Install it.
3) Set the preferences so that it DLs to where you want it to DL.

Step 2 - Download torrents
1) Go to a bittorrent site
2) Register if required (PM me if you need an invite to demonoid)
3) Search torrents (or link directly in from here, for example)
4) Enter torrent
5) If there are any seeders listed, you can download the torrent (if there are no seeders, you cannot)

Basically, that should do it. You should expect DLs to take some hours generally, and when they are done DLing, you should also upload it for the sake of those coming behind you for some time.

The concept of bit torrent is that several people host the same file, and your computer takes bits and pieces from each person. So, the more seeders (those that host) means the faster the leechers (the DLers) are able to DL it. In other words, you will be directly accessing other peoples hard drives for this file, and other people will be accessing your hard drive for files. Make sure you have some kind of firewall/security. I have not had any issues, but obviously you only want to give them access to what they need to get from you, not your whole life on the computer.

Hey Now!

I know, I know, the faster the better but, if a person can't afford the immense cost for faster internet...

is 768 Kbps fast enough?

Thanks.

Yes.
Right now for example, I am DLing two things... one is DLing at 130 some kbps, and the next is at 50 kbps or something. 180 some kbps.

Really, I very rarely DL as high as 786kbps. However, if you have less bandwith, you can DL, just less quickly than some folks.

Really though, DLing is usually limited by the seeders' UL speeds... For example, I DL a thing will seven seeders, but if they are all seeding at 10kbps (probably because they are seeding multiple things), that only adds up to 700kbps.

It is worth it as it is free (other than the power involved in your internet and computer).

Keep in mind, if you are DLing, your other usage of the internet will be necessarily slower, and it might lower how quickly you DL even further.

I believe in the preferences, which you should set up before you start DLing anything, you can limit your maximum DL and/or UL speeds so as to still give you some other internet ability. In such a case, DLing over night, or while you are at work is fine. I usually do that, and when I use the computer, I turn off the BT client.

One more point... most sites you can DL from require you to LOG IN before your UL/DL will be credited to your account... effecting your ratio. This doesn't (in most website's cases) stop you from DL/ULing, it just means it will go onlogged.

I was intimidated as hell with this whole torrent thing. Downloaded and installed uTorrent over a year ago. Signed up over at LL about the same time, read a thread about how to torrent at another site and it confused the hell out of me; seemed really complicated.

Fast forward to December when I actually started using the thing. Its a piece of cake once you give it a whirl. I leave my home machine on most of the time day and night seeding to other folks.

My theoretical speed, what I pay for, is 1.5 down and 800 up. That said, I have been able to leech on and grab 1 G shows in less than half an hour, if enough seeders are available.

If you haven't tried before, give it a try.

Alright. Thanks for the additional input, Kochman, and for your input, as well, Boxorain.

I'm finally (yes, finally) getting high speed internet. The two lone reasons: torrenting and uploading shows in mp3 form. For the uploading, if what used to take 8 to 12 hours can become 20 to 45 minutes, that's pretty damn sweet and I'll be able to offer folks more shows than what I've been doing so far this year.

Reason I asked if 768 kbps is fast enough for torrenting is 'cause the internet company offers 4 levels of speed and I'm only getting the $19.95 per month basic bottom level. (I also had absolutely no idea if 768 is enough.)

I really wanted to stick with Dial-up for $0.00 a month but the number of Dead-family shows that I can torrent is just way too appealing and WAY easier than sending B&P's to people.

I'll report back when I've got news about my first successful expedition into the world of torrenting.

If I can do it, anyone can!

Nothing positive to report yet...

because Time Warner Cable (who the cable modem will be coming from) still has me waiting for what I ordered almost 10 whole days ago.
