This is a thread for when you find Jerry sitting in with someone else other than the usual suspects (Dead, JGB, etc.)

I was listenin to Country Joe & The Fish Live At Fillmore West 1969. Mr Garcia comes out of nowhere for a 38 minute track called Donovan's Reef Jam. This is excellent raw, primal Jerry. I strongly suggest it. A huge THANKS goes out to CR79 for this one.

It's on the album Country Joe & The Fish - Live! Fillmore West 1969

.

According to reviews: The highlight of this album is undoubtedly the 38 min "Donovan's Reef Jam" featuring special guests Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, and Steve Miller. Jack Cassady on bass all night as well, so it's a bit of an 60's super group.

For Garcia's studio appearances, this is the most useful place to turn:

It's tricky though, due to the way it's arranged - the "with others" section is ordered by release date, so the Country Joe Live 1969 album is (of course) found in 1996; or the Zabriskie Point session from '70, for instance is in the "various artists" section.
(Though he's not playing with others there, the Zabriskie 2-disc edition is worth hearing since you get a whole half-hour of Jerry noodling by himself.)

The other big live jam with Jerry that's been released is the Jefferson Airplane Live at the Family Dog, September 6 '69.

One CD I'd recommend is the Garcia/Wales "Side Trips", which is basically an hour of jazzy instrumentals from 1970. That's not getting into all the Saunders, Grisman, Old & In The Way stuff....

And although it hasn't been released, you can't overlook Garcia sitting in with the Allman Brothers on 12-31-73....I think it's up for streaming at Wolfgangs.

All those New Riders shows from '70/71 with Jerry on pedal steel, probably go without saying.

These are some unreleased early Jerry-with-others jam sessions that are circulating. These are mostly rather dull 12-bar blues jams, as I recall....

5/21/68 Carousel Ballroom -
Jam [17:35] ; Good Shepherd [8:44] ; Jam [11:17] ; My Babe [7:29] ; My Baby Told Me [3:32] ; Key to the Highway [5:18]
This circulates as "Tuesday Night Jam" with: Jerry Garcia, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Elvin Bishop, Steve Miller, Mickey Hart, and Will Scarlett.

7/28/68 Rancho Olompali
- 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds Jam (29:50)
- Jerry Garcia, Jack Casady, Mickey Hart

10/21/68 - This is simply a mislabel for 12/16/68 (you can tell if it has two long 40-minute jams with Jack Casady). However, to confuse things, 12/24/68 and 10/28/69 have also circulated under this false date. These are a couple posts from a few years ago that illustrate how hard it is to date things:

12/24/68 Matrix - Jam [30:56]
The tapes circulating with this date are from a "Hartbeats" show, with Harvey Mandel. This jam has previously circulated as "Set 3" of 12/16/68.
The partial set formerly circulated, but this is the setlist for the complete recording, something like 90 minutes:
1. Jam (fades in)
2. You Got To Feel It
3. 3 O Clock In The Morning
4. She's A Mojo Worker
5. Jam (cut)
Guests: Harvey Mandel (guitar) , Elvin Bishop (guitar) , Steve Miller (organ) , Gordon Chambers (drums)

10-28-1969 Jefferson Airplane House, San Francisco, CA
Jam Session
1. Been All Around This World [04:00]
2. Big Boss Man [06:28]
3. Jam (Stormy Monday Theme) [13:57]
4. Slow Blues [07:19]
5. Jam [05:28]
6. Jam [19:19]
Total: [56:34]
Jerry Garcia - Guitar
Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar
Jack Cassady - Bass
Mickey Hart - Percussion
Spencer Dryden - Percussion

12/15/70 Matrix - Garcia & Friends
SET 1 - [45:44] [0:45] ; Alabama Bound [4:13] ; Eight Miles High Instrumental [4:27] ; Eight Miles High [3:53] ; Cowboy Movie [8:32] ; [1:32] ; Wall Song [7:39] ; [1:52] ; Bertha [9:19] ; Bird Song [3:32]
SET 2 - [1:07:50] Drop Down Mama [4:06] ; [0:21] ; Cowboy Movie [9:42] ; [1:10] % Triad [9:39] ; [0:05] % Wall Song [7:49] ; [0:42] ; Bertha [4:06] ; [1:09] ; Deep Elem Blues [6:48] ; [2:23] ; Motherless Children [8:38] ; [0:33] ; Laughing [10:18] ; [0:21]
This is Crosby, Garcia, Lesh & Hart, sometimes known as David And The Dorks. SET 1 is an afternoon rehearsal and soundcheck. SET 2 is the live set.
The first four tunes are all Crosby's. The Jam out of Triad is choice. Bertha is a very early version with a few bungled lyrics. Deep Elem Blues is a unique arrangement heavily influenced by Crosby's rhythm guitar.

Light I have Garcia/Wales Hooteroll? which is one of my favorite albums. Side Trips is actually kind of hard to track down. I also have that ABB show. This is an excellent list thank you for saving me some research one day.

I just tracked down Sanjay Mishra's album Blue Incanation. This features one of the last studio collaborations with Jerry. He appears on 3 songs. I really dig Sanjay's style on this. Honestly, I would have been happy to listen to this without Jerry. Garcia's presence doesn't hurt though. His electric guitar fits in way too well with Sanjay's nylon strings and guitar synths.

I strongly suggest to listen to the entire album but if you must skip....

Monsoon
Clouds
Nocturne
