And tell us why when you vote, what set it apart from the other years in the era, in your mind/ears...

Had to go with 91 myself... 90 was a possibility, but just too short for the Vince segment... some amazing, classic shows nevertheless.
93 also had a chance with me, but Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce tipped the scales...

91, wow. There are a couple of bombs in there, sure, but... Bruce is all over the place, some nice setlists, the Bruce songs (yeah, I like them), Jerry has great nights (not every night) despite his habit catching up with him again, Vince represents well when not being crushed by Bruce... the Dark Stars of 91, short and sweet, which I enjoy.

Very easy, the 1991 circus.

Mainly because of Hornsby and a loud and crunchy Bob Weir guitar.

1993 for me.

the new tunes, the Garcia ones in particular, added a new voice to the ongoing conversation that was the Grateful Dead's music.

Vince had toned down the grating keyboard style a bit.

pre 8/21 (debut of Lightning Bolt guitar) Jerry had a FANTASTIC, biting guitar tone, i've only really heard it during this year.

post 8/21 Jerry devlops that "acoustic" sounding tone...i dig it on some tunes...not at all on others...takes a little while to gel and develop just right but he finally NAILS a beautiful tone on that axe by the year-ending 12/17-18-19/93 shows in Oakland...which is a good counterpoint to his fragile voice that run...it was SHOT TO HELL.

to my ears '93 had a huge amount of all-around killer shows with fantastic setlists...also interesting/fascinating was the continuing developement of the post-Terrapin jams...3/25, 6/23 (the best EVER IMO), 6/26, 9/9, 9/13...and the super good 9/29...

also 5/26 and 5/27/93 are two of my very favorite 90s shows.

i love every year of the 90's...including 1995... i thought of voting for 1991 because i so dig the Madison Square Garden run from that year...but too often Bruce Hornsby is too bombastic for my Grateful Dead tastes...i love his playing, but he was too often the dominant player to my ears...other times of course, he meshed very well with the ensemble and traded licks telepathically with Jerry.

BUT...'93 it is.

1991

Like you said, Koch, 1990 was the very close runner-up. Maybe its because I saw more shows in '91 than any other year, as well as the Bruce factor.

Or, maybe, it was that overrated Halloween show! Confused

93 - a no-brainer for me. 1990 could have been, if it were a full year...but I am not willing make that projection. 1993 was crisp - featuring a new Garcia guitar tone that sounded way better than anything from 1991-1992...and then another fresh tone unvailed in August, 1993.

There are so many GREAT shows from 1993, albeit mixed with some bad ones....but to me, there were many more mediocre shows 91, 92, and of course 94-95. As I've stated before, Bruce shook things up, but too often for me the music became over-saturated...almost like the "Grateful Dead Orchestra." That's fine sometimes, but "like a swiss watch" was out the window.

1993 was cutting-edge Dead, and we can only go on imagining what could have been if Jerry did not precipitously decline in 1994.

I fuckin' LOVE that overrated Halloween show Wink . Just listened to it yesterday. For me it's a toss up between 90 and 91. I actually saw alot of shows in the 90s. 6/10/90 at Cal-Expo is still pretty fresh in my mind. Course I play it alot.Yeah it was grate having Mr. Hornsby on board. Also really dig 12/7/90 or is it 7/12/90? The one Koch turned me onto w/Foolish Heart>Dark Star.Far-Out and Fabulous. Hmmmmmmmm...Sounds like I should go w/90!

Hate to be a "whistleblower" here Fillmore, but 6/10/90, 7/12/90, etc..are not from the "Yo Vinny Era," as Brentasmo was still with the band through the Summer Tour.

One more thing about 1991: I'm not fond in general of Bobby's MIDI work, and he used the MIDI extensively throughout the year. When you already got a piano (Bruce), violin (Vince), and flute (Jerry), you don't need a trumpet (Bobby) on top of that.

I like '93 but havn't listened to too much of it, what's a solid month for first sets? and sweet 2nd sets?

Currently wrapping up 6/22/93 LLR, awesome drunken Bobby.

Swami, one man gathers what another man spiills for '91, what you described is exactly what I like about '91.

June was probably the most consistent month of 93, then you have March and December (Jerry's voice was shot most of the month, but the playing is great).

The year, great as some shows, moments, etc. are lack consistency.

Some of the best performances are in there, nestled firmly between stinkers.

8/21-22/93, both amazing shows, are followed by the trainwrecks that are the shoreline run that followed, for example.

for my all time 93 recommendations... and, I completely agree... the things swami listed as problems with 91 are what I consider its greatest points. Jer's guitar was certainly not bad in 91, and... the year just barely eaked out 93... but sometimes 93 eaks out 91...

I love that extra dimension that Bruce added... more importantly, the interplay between Jer & Brent that left, it was back, with Bruce. Vince and Jer never really had that, like Keith and Jer never really had that. Don't get me wrong, I like the keyboard work that they both did, but...

Bruce also gave a much needed kick in the pats to Jerry later on in 1991, as he started slipping from his 89-90 peak. It extended that run just ever so much longer.

I almost want to change my vote to 93... but... I really do love 91 up to about MSG in the fall... after that I am not so huge on the year.

I voted '90, but probably should have said '91 since I was really just voting for the MSG run. As for post-'91--any year where you were liable to hear Wave to the Wind>Corrina>Way to Go Home>Easy Answers>Eternity with Jerry's guitar turned all the way down gets a miss from me.
