September 7, 1990 – Richfield Coliseum – Vince’s First Show

This show should get more love. It’s not the best show of the year or even the run, but it ain’t too shabby either. It gets overshadowed by the next night and by the MSG shows later that month.

I - Cold Rain & Snow, Walkin' Blues, Ramble On Rose, Me & My Uncle-> Big River, Althea, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Bird Song, Picasso Moon, U.S. Blues
II - China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Truckin', Crazy Fingers-> Playin' In The Band-> Drums-> Jam-> I Need A Miracle-> Black Peter-> Turn On Your Love Light, E: Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Let’s look at the merits.

* A 10-song first set, including classic GD songs and featuring a sweet Bird Song, a great version of Masterpiece and hot US Blues to close
* Solid pre-drums
* A tight band, with something to prove the first night out after Brent’s death. Listen to Weir, he’s very good on this night
* An unvarnished look at Vince, before the pairing with Hornsby. Jerry introduces him to the fans after Bird Song
* An historic show. Many songs take on powerful meaning in Brent’s absence – Cold Rain, Bird Song, Know u Rider, Truckin, Crazy Fingers, Black Pete(!), Knockin
* Crystal clear and beautifully-mixed SBD at LMA

This really is a great first set, and a lot of songs for the money. Cold Rain and Walkin are standard, then RoR gets things heated up. Big River is nice. Gotta love Weir sliding around on Althea – sounds like 1978. Masterpiece has the Coca Cola bridge and tons of great Bobby energy, great soloing from Jerry. Richfield gets a little extra UMPH on the “Coliseum” line. Love Garcia’s back-ups on this one. Bird Song is really loose and exploratory—just right. But instead of ending there, they tack on Picasso and US Blues. Nice.

Second set features a great China>Rider transition and a beautiful Crazy>Playin pairing. There’s also a nice Spoonful/Smokestack tease during the transition from Truckin to Crazy. Pretty cool. Post-space is unremarkable, but is anchored by a super-nice Black Peter and a poignant Knockin encore.

Certainly they proved themselves ready for the future at this show, and the next night they came out and blew the roof off the place.

Am I losing my mind, or was there a reply from Swami on this thread as of last night?

Great long First Set. Diaper Dandy's keyboard sound was fresh. Bird is excellent.

China-Rider and Crazy-Playin are very good as mentioned. Also Peter not too shabby in the ballad. Sweet Heaven's Door - seemed like a Brent tribute as Stella did the next night.

Pretty good show - a fun listen not just for the novelty of Vinny's premier. I echo the sentiments of S&R for the most part.

Haven't heard this one since the cassette days - will put it on my list.

Pretty decent new AUD available at LMA...

Vince sounded much better when they just let him play the organ. He's tentative, but sounds great for the most part.
