As we all know pig did alot of old blues standards. Some of them very famous(Lovelight) to obscurities that were only played a couple times(The Rub). Im putting up a poll to see what your guys favorite pigpen cover tune and why is it your fave. And tell me if i missed ne covers he did.
Thanx. My fave pig cover is hard to handle. pigpen sings hard to handle with so much lustfulness and power that it puts the black crowes cover to shame.

I voted for 'It Hurts Me Too'. I love the music of Elmore James.

Why no 'Big Boss Man' in the poll ?

I had a hard time choosing. I voted for Smokestack but it was a toss up. I really like Hard To Handle and Lovelight just as much.

Good mornin' lil' school girl, can I come a home with you?
Tell yo' mama 'n yo' papa, I'm a lil' school boy too

Incidentally, jessewood34, you can go back and edit the poll to allow other options (like the Big Boss Man that sugar pointed out).

I hate picking favorites but I had to go with Lovelight. It's one of those that's practically a Grateful Dead song, in my view, but the way it so often went was just.... so far out there in a bizarre way where Pig was purely Pig, just lettin' loose, and then Jerry would rip and Pig would let Bobby in on it sometimes and... and... and... I've been floored more times by a Pigpen Lovelight than any other tune he sang. Now I think I'm gonna hafta pull a good one out this week! (I love them all but I don't get that same feeling for any other Pig tune.)

I went with Schoolgirl. I have listened to that song more than any other Pig tune. Lovelight is in the close second. Still Schoolgirl showcases Pig singing the blues and having fun with it. Didn't he change up the age at the end of the song a lot?

Yeah the "you are going to be on Dateline Mr. McKernan" vibe is pretty creepy. I do agree that it is the prototype of the sleazy GD.

Thank you for that.
Please consider my initial vote for 'It Hurts Me Too' now being split 50/50 between 'Big Boss Man' as well.

Not that it will make much difference to the outcome of the poll Laughing

Hard To Handle. Tune just rocks and Pig wails.
Also Lovelight, King Bee, Smokestack and Big Boss Man.
Actually Run Run Rudolph was pretty cool when he covered it.

thanx zooma. i have a suggestion for a website ppl can go to to download tons of mp3 shows. its called the piratesbay and you just type in grateful dead soundboard shows. this guy compiled all of his shows into different years and not all of the shows are present but thiers tons of them. ive gotten so many shows that im just overwhelmed by all of them ive been basicly listening to the dead for like 3 weeks with some pink floyd brian eno and early genesis thrown in.

Tough one. I finally went with Big Boss Man-- It's like this song was written for him. Was lucky enough to see them perform it a time or two. Nice harmonica solo and the boys layin' down that laid back groove. Always an audience pleaser Cool

It's Schoolgirl by a whisker over Smokestack for me.
I just remember wearing out my Two From the Vault Disc when it came out.

Absolutely Exclamation

The pig always seemed to pull out a fantastic harmonica solo as well as singing it from the bottom of his very soul.

Had to go with schoolgirl, but lovelight, Big Boss Man, and Hard to Handle were close runners up.
