I've put together a list of 1969 shows that are not in circulation,
with the help of Deadlists.
Some (most?) of these shows might be in the Vault; some of these shows
might not have been played. A few, fortunately, were captured by AUD
tapers, and I listed those in hopes that complete SBDs were also
In a few cases, when Deadbase listed the songs that were played at a
missing show, I've noted them [ in brackets ] - usually this is just a
few songs that someone remembered.
I also listed shows that are missing big chunks of music - some of
these may be tapeflips, but sometimes the timings of vault reels that
Rob Eaton listed correspond suspiciously to the amount of music
missing, so it's quite possible more is on the original reels than
made it onto circulating copies. (Not all of his timings are correct,
Another thing about cuts - often it was Bear's practice to tape a show
both on cassettes and reels, so many shows are available from two
sources, and cuts in one copy can be filled in from the other. (One
example is the 4/23/69 cut in St Stephen>It's A Sin, which was
recovered when a cassette source appeared.)
This list is something like a "work in progress" since I probably
missed a few things and there's always more research that can be done,
so let me know if you have corrections / additions.
MISSING 1969 SHOWS
1/2/69 Fillmore West
1/3/69 Fillmore West
1/4/69 Fillmore West
1/24/69 Avalon - Apparently another 30 minutes of SBD hasn't made it
into circulation yet.
1/26/69 Avalon - There's a big cut in Dark Star, which may be a late
2/5/69 Kansas City - If Eaton's timing is correct the circulating
version of this tape is missing 30 minutes, suggesting that perhaps
the several cuts are not on the master.
2/6/69 St Louis - The circulating SBDs are copies from Bear's cassette
master. There is a cut of uncertain proportions at 8:34 into the Dark
Star. According to Rob Eaton the beginning of this show was mastered
onto the end of a cassette containing tape of the Rolling Stones, and
this cut is where that cassette ran out.
There is another cut between the Cryptical reprise and Feedback,
presumably another tape flip.
If Eaton's timing is correct 7 minutes are missing from the
circulating tape, implying that the circulating copy has been
2/12/69 Fillmore East - Probably the missing 16 minutes on the
circulating tape represents the beginning of the Dark Star.
2/19/69 Fillmore West - [ Dark Star ]
2/24 + 26/69 Matrix - Hartbeats
3/12/69 Fillmore West
4/11/69 Tucson - Obviously the 1st set is incomplete ; probably
Cryptical Envelopment > Drums preceded The Other One but possibly
something else. Likely more tunes are missing before that, too -- if
the tape catalogued under SET 1 represents the second side of a
cassette master, then there's 45 minutes missing previous to where the
tape cuts in. According to a newspaper review of the show, they also
performed versions of Morning Dew and Sittin On Top Of The World.
Presumably these tunes belong before That's It.
4/15/69 Omaha - Most of the show is AUD only.
4/22/69 - There is a cut in The Other One at 1:39, apparently a flip
chop on the master cassette ; probably 4 to 9 minutes of Jamming are
lost here. (There are also less major cuts in the other Boston Ark
5/3/69 early show, Rocklin - [ Morning Dew ; Turn On Your Love Light ;
Baby Blue ]
5/3/69 Winterland, second set - [ Dupree's Diamond Blues ; Sittin On
Top Of The World ; Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your
Love Light ; with Baby Blue for the encore ]
5/8/69 Golden Gate Park
5/9/69 San Mateo - [ Me & My Uncle ; Hard To Handle ; Doin' That Rag ;
New Potato Caboose ; Turn On Your Love Light ]
Either 5/11/69 or 5/29/69 may be missing? Show with Santana drummers
has been attributed to both these dates.
5/28/69 Winterland - [ Smokestack Lightnin ; That's It For The Other
One > Turn On Your Love Light ]
5/31/69 Eugene - At 1:52 into the Cryptical reprise there is a cut ;
probably several minutes are missing here. It's anybody's guess how
much of the second set (between Doin' That Rag and Cosmic Charlie) may
6/11/69 San Francisco - Bobby Ace show
6/20/69 Fillmore East, early & late shows - [King Bee ; Cold Jordan ;
Dire Wolf ; Casey Jones ; Mama Tried ; Turn On Your Love Light:
6/21/69 Fillmore East, early show - AUD only
6/21/69 Fillmore East, late show - There is a cut in Dark Star at
5:10 ; most of the Dark Star is missing on the SBD tape. Rob Eaton
lists 101 minutes of cassette SBD for this show, but only 91
circulates. One would guess that at least 10 minutes are missing from
the circulating Dark Star. The 10 minute discrepancy between the
timing Eaton lists and the timing of the circulating tape may be the
missing core of Dark Star.
6/22/69 Central Park, NY - Only first two songs available in SBD; rest
of show is AUD only.
6/29/69 Rio Nido
7/3/69 Colorado Springs - We have most of the show; the complete
setlist was: Green Green Grass Of Home > Slewfoot ; Sittin On Top Of
The World ; Morning Dew ; High Time ; Me And My Uncle ; Casey Jones ;
Mama Tried ; Hard To Handle ; He Was A Friend Of Mine ; Turn On Your
7/8/69 Toronto, early & late shows - [ Green Green Grass Of Home % El
Paso % Cryptical Envelopment > Drums > The Other One > Cryptical
Envelopment % Casey Jones % Morning Dew ; possibly also Mountains of
the Moon, New Potato Caboose, Doin' That Rag, St Stephen ]
7/12/69 New York - First part of the show is only available in AUD.
7/16/69 San Francisco
8/24/69 Squamish, BC
9/1/69 Baton Rouge - Lovelight cut. If correct, Eaton's timing implies
a complete Turn On Your Love Light on the master.
9/11/69 Family Dog? (Only one AUD track of Easy Wind is available, if
it's dated right.)
9/26/69 Fillmore East - AUD only
9/27/69 Fillmore East early show - AUD only
9/27/69 Fillmore East late show - [ Mama Tried ; Good Morning Little
Schoolgirl ; In The Midnight Hour ]
9/29/69 Cafe au Go Go early show - AUD only
9/29/69 late show - [ He Was A Friend Of Mine ]
9/30/69 Cafe au Go Go - Early or late show is AUD only; the other show
10/1/69 Cafe au Go Go - two shows
10/5/69 Houston - [ Lovelight ]
10/6/69 Family Dog
10/17/69 San Jose
10/24/69 Winterland - AUD only - several songs missing: [ Hard to
Handle ; Mama Tried ; Good Lovin' - the Archive copy is missing Other
One > Cryptical Envelopment > Jam > Cosmic Charlie ]
10/25/69 Winterland - first part of show missing: [ Good Lovin' ; Me &
My Uncle ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Casey Jones ; High
10/26/69 Winterland - second part of show missing: [ King Bee ; Beat
It On Down The Line ; Good Lovin' ; Doin' That Rag ; China Cat
Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Baby Blue ]
11/7/69 Fillmore - The tape in circulation was edited. There are
splices before and after Mama Tried, Next Time, and Good Lovin', and
songs are probably missing in these gaps. They played [ Hard To Handle
and Casey Jones ] after Morning Dew ; [ Me & My Uncle and Cold Rain &
Snow ] after Mama Tried ; and [ High Time ] after Next Time You See
On the circulating tape the Uncle John's Jam breaks off, cutting back
to Dark Star at 1:45 ; 20 seconds to 2 minutes of Jamming must be lost
here. Eaton lists 122 minutes of reel SBD but only about 103 minutes
circulate. There is room to hope that the complete tape contains the
complete Dark Star.
12/5/69 Fillmore West - AUD only
12/10/69 Los Angeles - At least the Other One suite is AUD only, if
it's attributed right. (It's somewhat difficult to distinguish the
AUDs from the SBDs of these huge Thelma Theater shows!)
12/20/69 Fillmore - middle of show missing: [ Me & My Uncle ; Hard To
Handle ; Cumberland Blues ; Black Peter ; Dark Star > St. Stephen ]
12/21/69 Fillmore - first part of show missing: [ Smokestack
Lightnin ; New Speedway Boogie ; Mama Tired ; Dire Wolf ; Mason's
Children ; China Cat Sunflower ; Uncle John's Band ; High Time ]
12/30/69 Boston - The circulating soundboard cuts just as The Other
One's last vocals are ending, and resumes immediately afterward near
the beginning of Cosmic Charlie. Though it's missing on the tape, it
seems almost certain that they went on to play the Cryptical reprise
before transitting into Cosmic Charlie. Since this reprise varies from
2 minutes to 12 or more, it's difficult to say how much music is
Dark Star cuts as they are gliding down toward the second vocals ;
probably around 3-4 minutes are missing before the end of the tune.
After this cut the tape splices to the tag end of Alligator. It is
usually assumed that the set ran Dark Star > Alligator, but this is a
short set as the circulating tape runs, even after adding 3 minutes of
Dark Star and 4 of Alligator, and it seems possible that more than
that is missing here.
If Eaton's timing is correct, 20 minutes of this show still isn't
??/69 - Deadlists also has a 20-minute Dark Star which is undated and
quite rare, and not on the Archive. I notice Jim Powell doesn't have
this on his Dark Star list, so possibly it has been identified, will
have to check:
Dark Star [20:01#]
Stylistic considerations date this Dark Star to April - May - June
Powell: These considerably degraded, fragmentary SBD tapes have been
in circulation since the 70s. T.C.'s keys ensure the '69 date. The 1st
vocals start at 6:44 and finish at 7:43, and they never really go into
space afterward, marking this Dark Star as early summer 69 at the
latest, but it is definitely somewhat after Live Dead. Riffs
resembling Sputnik occur around 12:20. 2nd vocals start at 18:34 and
conclude at 19:29. Latvala was unable to identify this tape. My best
guess is Winterland 5/3/69.
A few additions/corrections:
> 4/22/69 - There is a cut in The Other One at 1:39, apparently a flip
> chop on the master cassette ; probably 4 to 9 minutes of Jamming are
> lost here. (There are also less major cuts in the other Boston Ark
Lemieux has played this on the Taper's Section (4-20-09) -
unfortunately, the Vault copy still cuts about five minutes into the
Other One, and cuts back in about a minute into Cryptical. So while
it's a few minutes longer than circulating copies, it's still
> 5/3/69 early show, Rocklin - [ Morning Dew ; Turn On Your Love Light ;
> Baby Blue ]
Lemieux played the Lovelight on the Taper's Section (4-30-07).
> 6/11/69 San Francisco - Bobby Ace show
This was the Dead with John Dawson & David Nelson, and Peter Grant on
pedal-steel. (More details in my acoustic-sets post.)
> 6/20/69 Fillmore East, early & late shows - [King Bee ; Cold Jordan ;
> Dire Wolf ; Casey Jones ; Mama Tried ; Turn On Your Love Light:
> Alligator ]
Lemieux played the Lovelight on the Taper's Section (6-18-07).
7/10/69 - Dead.net lists a Norwalk, CT Hell's Angels party.
9/6/69 Family Dog - Lemieux played the Midnight Hour encore on the
Taper's Section (9-3-07) - since this wasn't on the circulating copy,
perhaps more of this short show is missing as well.
> 9/11/69 Family Dog? (Only one AUD track of Easy Wind is available, if
> it's dated right.)
There's no record of a 9/11/69 show. Jorma K plays slide on this Easy
Wind - it's definitely an early version, but no telling where it's

Jim Powell notified me that this is actually a degraded copy of 6/5/69.
Our freedom, in the very movements in which it asserts itself, creates budding habits which will stifle it, if it does not review itself by constant effort.
