So hey... 'Sup?

My suggestion o' the night kinda goes like this, yo........ (man, i hate being out of beer. I often wonder in this state of being, should i corect my typing errors? I will...... maybe........ but anyway....)

my Site Suggestions are usually on my mind like if it were my site and all, this is what I'd do.... but, of course, should you, Rob, may I call you Rob? Should you decide to veto a soooogestion, then hey, that's cool :)

ANyway.....

The Poop Deck

Anything Else
--Come one, come all! -- add here: "No politics, please."

Bands -- "Bands" alone like this is cool but I'd change to "Other Music We Dig" I dunno, man, just sounds better to me.

Politics Only!
--"Repubs, Conservatives, Moderates, Libs, Dems, We're All Still Deadheads!" --- this would be brand new. My idea is to allow "Anything Else" to be for everything under the sun that's, well, I'm sure this can be figured out -- [b]NOT
politics. Now, I know very well that politics can be introduced to so many threads in "Anything Else" ... but should that happen then I'd monitor it but essentially just let that be, ya know, so be it. The idea wasn't to start a political discussion but it happens.

But if someone's idea is to specifically discuss a political issue then this is where it would go.

Anyway..... yeah, so, like, that's me idea o' the night....yo. Now let's see who's gonna win this Dodgers-Braves game in extras.

I like this idea. Changing the "Bands" forum name would be cool, because we talk about other music in general there, not just "other bands". Also a forum dedicated to politics would be greatly appreciated for us folks who choose not to discuss politics Wink

As many of you have noticed... there has been a change.

The political forum is open, but only if you request access...
So far I have received requests or inquiries (which I will assume to be requests) about where the political threads are from the following, and granted them access:
dogstarz
zoooma
swamiGD80s
tknight

Hi there Kochman, before I comment further let me just say that it is 1:36 am here where I am in Germany and I can't sleep for lots of reasons, some of which I don't even know, but also because of a stream of worries zipping through my conscious mind. The stream of worries seems to be preventing me from shutting down, I can't turn it off.

So that, said, I am a little extra grumpy. I did not know about this change until now because I generally avoid the political stuff on this forum because it either annoys me or I don't have tome to read it, but I don't want to have to seek permission to access it. What the hell? What about all of the "you get to say what you want here" rhetoric? So are some of us unworthy or somehow not to be trusted? I feel strongly that every member should have access to every thread and should not have to ask for access.

I am also feeling extra bitchy at this particular time so if there are good reasons for the access control that I have not considered, then, I guess so. Confused

Um, I think you are misunderstanding...
The reason I make it like that is so that those who DON'T want to be confronted with all of our outrageous opinions don't see it.
I am not going to say you can enter, but Joe Schmoe can't... anyone can enter, just let me know if you want to...
Its not meant to keep willing participants out, but rather to protect the unwilling from the political stuff...
Basically, it is no holds barred in the politics forum, so I want to make sure that people are basically volunteering to access the place... do you see what I mean?

That being said, I have given you and Cowboysth24 entry... so post away!

ok thank you but we had the choice to not be confronted before because we could choose not to read it.

Just put an excalmation or disclaimer at the top?

Can you get me some access here? I have been out of the loop for a few days due to working overtime, others on the computer, etc.
I agree with this idea, and at least give Kochman some credit for not locking threads out like crazy and editing big brother stylee.

It's a brand new change so not everyone knows about it yet.

I concur. My idea for the new forum is not to fight but to inform by way of debate/voicing opinion/posting a news article.

Someone might not want to go so far as to send a PM to ask permission to view the forum. Those very same people might never have a single thing to say . . . but maybe they'd learn a thing or three from reading in there. Maybe they'd learn they're not alone in their conservative-leaning ideals as a Deadhead. Or maybe they have opinions that are on their mind and they need to let them loose, no matter which side of the aisle they may be on. There are numerous possibilities how one could benefit from the forum . . . but they might be too shy to ask for permission.

Exactly. Since it's labeled as "Politics Only" then a person clearly already has the choice whether they want to enter that realm or not. No one is forcing them to go in there. I think it should be open to all without restrictions . . . but perhaps with moderation in case anyone flies off the handle and decides that it's okay to be a prick to a fellow Deadhead who might happen to have a differing opinion on something, no matter which that opinion leans.

I understand your points.
I just think that it really isn't a big deal to request access...

Well not to make to fine a point of it because I am not all that interested in participating in political debates in this space, but the reason why this bugs me so much is the idea of having to ask for access. I find the idea of "protecting" us from exposure to political arguments in this way to be patronizing. We are all adults. Having a section for politics only is fine, having a moderator to remind everyone to avoid personal attacks is fine, but we are all adults and we can read it or not. We should not have to ask to see it or particiapte in it.

Very true Sugar - and yet there have been complaints simply about the fact that politics is/was being discussed in these forums.

I think it was the fact that politics was the main focus here for a little bit. The conversations about music have slowed down and politics were on the rise.

Music is great and great to talk about . . . but politics affects all of us in tremendous ways. If talk of politics amongst some was on the rise, it might be important to those talking about it. It's good to have that outlet.

It's not just an outlet that someone can use to talk about politics, it can also be a source of information that someone might just want to have a casual peek at... and Sugarmag is right, they shouldn't have to ask to see or participate.

If you guys feel this way maybe run a poll in the general anything else section about the restricted access policy. PMing Kochman to get in doesn't seem to be that big of a deal to me though.

Exactly... People were complaining... and as others mentioned, talk about the music was falling off the map, and I'd much rather have that then debates about politics (This is primarily a GD forum, not a political forum)... So, yes, in a way, this move was to minimalize the impact of all these crazy deadheads (myself included) from overruning the reason that brings us all together (Jerry) with BS that we can't really effect or change anyhow.
Sorry Zoooma and Sugar that you don't like it. Its not like I am asking for Congress to confirm people here...
