This show is definitely worth a listen, I enjoyed hearing it a couple of times, the band sounds polished and in sync most of the time.
Hell In A Bucket, Sugaree, Minglewood Blues, Ramble On Rose, Me & My Uncle, Maggie's Farm, High Time, Cassidy, Tennessee Jed, Picasso Moon
China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Truckin'-> He's Gone-> Drums-> Jam-> The Wheel-> I Need A Miracle-> Black Peter-> Turn On Your Love Light, E: Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Right out of the gates, the band storms out with a really solid Hell in A Bucket-Sugaree, a combo that is getting higher on my list by the day, Sugaree is exactly what I want to hear after a good Bucket, and these two are definitely solid, which is not always the case. Plenty of not so good Buckets out there.
Minglewood isn't my favorite song, but this one is very good for a Weir brag song and it is established that Bob and Jerry and the rest have showed up to play and sing. Ramble On Rose isn't the best one ever, but it is still pretty good.
MAMU is fun enough, and then the band switches up the cowboy combo, and you think they might be going into Big River or Cumberland, and, wow, Maggie's Farm. Great tune. They trade off on verses without much effort, breezy and fun, love the lyrics on this one. By this time this is shaping up to be a really good show. I have heard Kochman profess not to like Maggie's Farm as done by the Dead, but this one is decent to my ears.
Then we get to High Time, Jerry's voice sounds aged but good on this one, perfect for this song, a melancholy ballad, sweet High Time for the era.
Phil saves Cassidy from being mediocre, as soon as the bass starts thumping it seems to bring it back on track, some nice jammies, not as good as say, the Swami recommended greatness of 6 13 87, but not a bad Cassidy at all.
T Jed, damn I have heard this song a lot, but this is a strong Jed, the ending is inspired instrumental. The keys in this show, Vinny and Bruce, sound good throughout, and this is a good show, but Picasso Moon is a stinker pretty much, although it gets better toward the end, I don't know if it is the sound issues or the band, but I would much rather hear TMNS or something else closing out the first set, or just sit on that Tennessee Jed. I am sure the Swam or somebody else has some good Picasso Moons to recommend, but I wouldn't recommend this one.
China-Rider to kick off the second set, China warms up to a very good transition and I Know You Rider becomes take no prisoners, with a little fanning and some really crispy Phil bass attack thrown in for good measure.
Pre Drums is Europe 90 sweetness continuing on into a sick Truckin, with Weir saying "all a friend can say 'it's a fuckin shame.'" True that Bob, there have been some deals going down lately where I would apply that statement to as well. Continuing on to He's Gone, strong strong strong, nice segue into drums, decent punchy drums and a not as hot space.
The Wheel is wheelistic as usual, I wish it was twice as long though. I Need A Miracle, great choice for the next song, dig it.
On to Black Peter, I really like this song in general for a couple of different reasons, one of my fav studio tracks from the Dead, spooky, this one is all righty.
A fair Lovelight with some energy and a Knockin on Heaven's Door finish it off in style. If you were to ask me my favorite encores right now, I would go Cold Jordan, And We Bid You Goodnight, or Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, but I suppose that is a topic for a different thread. No surprises, just a pretty solid show from what seems to me to be a pretty fun tour through Europe in 90, I am sure the mood in Europe in 90 was pretty good due to the fact that the Wall had gotten torn down and communism was falling apart at the seams and the world was becoming more united and upbeat.
Got some other projects going, but this one drew me in, really liked this show, I think 90 is a year that should get more press.
