Yes, it was 40 years ago today one of the monumental shows in band history was played.........Often referred to as THE Dark Star, this version has flashes of the past and future as well as the TC touch......I believe TC's work, especially on DS, really freed Phil up which allowed him to trade and noodle with Jerry much more than when they had my boy, Pig, on the keys.....It is a remarkable performance, setlist, and recording......As you all know this run got the box set treatment, and deservingly so.....Again, raise your glass and drink to the arguably best performance, ever, by the boys..........There is no denying the power of this show.....
Setlist A (I think a Death Dont or Viola could have made it better)
Good morning heads, yes today is 2/28 and that means another round on me....Yes, it obvious how I feel about this run, but I think it gets glossed over because its not available on Archive....Anyway, today's show 2/28/69, has THE strongest 2nd set that the band ever put together in 30 years....Yea, I said it, the best.....Take a quick look...
Good Morning Little School Girl
Doin' That Rag
I'm A King Bee
Turn On Your Love Light
The Other One
Death Don't Have No Mercy
Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)
And We Bid You Goodnight
Cryptical>DS>Stephen>11, not so uncommon...Then Death, then Alligator>drums>alligator jam>caution>feedback>goodnight.....It all looks familar, yet not quite the same...Let me put it another way----This second set is as close to flawless as you could possibly come...Its in the perfect order, all of the best elements of the band are represented and the show is a fucking steamroller........How can you go wrong with the magnificent seven sound with a setlist like this......This show smokes, and I think this is the single greatest show the band ever did....I will elaborate more later.....
Setlist #1 all time

I listened to this last night. It is in March Deadness. It was a very interesting show. I honestly zoned out during dark star> St. Stephen. I didn't realize that the change happened and when I did I was rather excited.
The second set is just relentless. Hyper-overdriveX hits in between Alligator>Caution. This could be a major player in the tourney and I agree that it might be one of the best sets ever! Today is as good a day as any to give this one a spin. FILTHY, FILTHY, FILTHY!
I'll start with a little more on the performance angle.....It is obvious theat they are having a great night musically, but they also sound like they are having the time of their lives.....Vocals are incredible throughout not to mention the crazy banter going on between songs......Everything is so light but the tunes are so heavy, making it sound effortless......So many different outstanding jams in this show where they are all trading.....Its so nice when it all comes together so completely, so furiously.........PEace

I am giving this a spin myself right now, as it had been a while. The entire run was so full of energy I could reach out and grab it from 40 years later.
As far as 2/28/69 2nd set being the best ever. Its cool you like it so much Sko.
In this revisiting of mine, the music was literally creeping me out as it was jamming so crazily shortly before the slow down for Death Don't. I mean, I have it up loud, and am in the dark (having returned from the beach) of my computer room working on tagging GD shows (an endless task that Zephyr thinks he is done with ), and I literally got startled several times by weird noises in the music.
Bump for the 41st anniversary........I still think this is the best show they ever did......Performance, setlist and recording are all phenominal.......The very best of the very best Give it a spin, you won't be sorry....
