The Annual LSP March Deadness Show Tournament

Welcome! Now let's get started....

Every year, during the month of March, the members of the Lost Sailor's Pub will host a 6 round, single-elimination tournament designed to crown 1 winner to be recognized as The Greatest Grateful Dead Show Ever! This title will be undisputed... at least until the following year.

Here's how the deal goes down:

Each round will consist of 2-show match-ups which will be in the form of a poll. Take your time and choose wisely, however, each poll as a certain time limit (see below). The winner of each poll will move on to the next round until only one show remains.

The schedule is as follows:
    Round 1
    begins 3/2; ends 3/16
    Round 2
    begins 3/18; ends 3/24
    Round 3
    begins 3/26; ends 4/1
    Round 4
    begins 4/3; ends 4/8
    Round 5
    begins 4/10; ends 4/14
    Round 6
    begins 4/16; ends 4/20

REMEMBER: You must be an LSP member to be able to vote in the polls! Membership is free; all you need is an e-mail address. If you are new to the forum and have not yet participated in a poll, you may try your hand at the Test Poll above.

It is not required to post a comment along with your vote, although it highly recommended. In the unlikely event of a tie, comments will be examined and considered by the moderator when determining which show will advance to the next round. Each thread will be locked when the polls come to a close. Have fun and may the best show win!

Up-to-date standings may be viewed at anytime by going to that year's Updated March Deadness Standings thread, or by

So, I'm looking at your new avatar, and thinking...
One dog's looking one way, the other the other, and the guy's like "Whatdya want from me?"

Is that not the painting from "Goodfellas" that the guys mom had?

Anyhow, obviously this is a great idea! I am totally excited, and I chose Might because with it you can bring Glory.

Wrong.

So, wait, you mean, might doesn't make right? That is the foundation of democracy... whoever is in the majority makes the rules.

I'm confused.

In response to questions about a tie-breaker, I've made an addition to the original post:

Given that there is no good mechanism here for breaking ties, this is a great idea CR79. I support this idea. It means, anonymous votes are not considered in a tie breaker. So, get vocal folks!
In future tournaments, we can break ties via a similar technique, or as smgarcia suggested, and I support, by using the seeding to break th tie.

We will also have 64 shows going up next time, like the NCAA Basketball... instead of 50, just in case people missed that.

In other news, it looks like the Gloryhounds are making a huge comeback over the Mighty Mighty Deadtones.

LOL!
When I hear the word glory I always think of Civil War soldiers striving for "glory" before they attack in a tightly packed formation and then slaughtered.

One can seek personal glory fueled by pride or one can glory in the majesty and beauty of another or an other. One might glory in might. Might is power based and serving of someone or some thing. Glory can be ego less, powerless, and un-serving. It can be based in worship which often is akin to subjugation.
I voted for might.

Do we really ONLY have 5 days to decide the firts round???!!!!! There are a ton of close match ups here that need the time to be heard. Seems a little hurried here in the first round. It should be longer.

I agree... I don't think we need to limit our time frame to the same kind of timeframe as the NCAA tournament has...

Length 1st round, maybe 2nd round, keep later rounds at at least 1 week. Some people don't come but once a week.

And, for all those curious... immediately upon completion of the tournament... a new top 64 voting with a new mechanism for voting will be implimented (instead of voting by year blocks, you will vote by year basically).

I can lengthen the time for Round 1 to maybe ten days if the majority of you think you need the extra time. However, the later rounds will be kept at 3 days. A week seems too long for just one or two polls. Last year it was 5 days and I feel like it slowed things down. I'm open to suggestions. Post them here.

It slows things down... but what's the rush? Wouldn't you rather greater participation than a whirlwind tour that will not come around again for another 11 months?

Agreed, it's not like this is going anywhere and we HAVE to get it done in a week or so. The first round is HUGE and these shows that we all voted on deserve to be listened to to get true results. The later rounds can go quicker as the shows become more familiar.

Another thing that would be great is if we can somehow get the setlists for each show in the thread. I have a Deadbase but for the folks that don't, it's kind of a pain to switch back and forth between two Archive windows or Deadlists windows. If you need help with that I will have most of the end of the week where I can help out!

I don't wanna post the setlist cause I figure that someone who is not familiar with a show might base their vote purely on the setlist.

HOWEVER, if you want to post a setlist to back up an argument as to what show is better, you may.

I wholeheartedly agree that voting based purely on a setlist is wrong.

I agree, Swami. Perhaps we can find a way to build the matchups into listening parties. We could perhaps do one set from one contender and one set from the other.

Speaking of which I am available this Friday night for an LP but not Saturday. A Deadness show or combination might be in order as you suggest.

Saturday will be my night again.. and yes, as we did last year, we should listen to Top 64 shows during this period.

I also agree with no set list... good call CR79

I'm for extending the time of the first round. Obviously as the field narrows less time will be required and there will be more familiarity with the shows remaining. Time spent at the start can be made up on the back end. I'm trying to listen to both shows in their entirety before I vote in a match up. I already voted differently then I thought I was going to in the first match up after a fresh listen. And I don't want to vote for anything based on reputation, set list, or what era I prefer. But dammit I need more time.

CR79, the evidence is clear... we need more time in the first rounds... I say 2 weeks for the first round, since it is 32 match ups of 64 shows! Then scale it down as needed...

how far into April do you wanna go??
I'm considering 10 days. it's unrealistic that anyone is gonna listen to all 64 shows in 2 weeks anyway.

Of course not all 64 shows CR79... think about it. No one is saying that. But when there are 64 possible shows, we will likely need to listen to a good amount of those.
I, for example, have several match ups to think about and relisten to, just as I did last year. Off the top of my head, let's say it's 6 of 32 matchups... that's 12 shows...
I simply don't have the time in 10 days to listen to even 8 shows, with family/work/other obligations...

As for how long into April... who cares... until complete?
The next 8 months will be spent voting on the new top 64... that is more than enough time.

2 weeks seems awfully long for just 1 round. still, if nobody objects, I guess I can make it happen.

Don't look at it as one round... look at it as 32 games.
Except we can't play our games simultaneously across the nation like the NCAA does...

okay so I extended Round One to end the night of the 16th.

until then, I'll be bumping the polls with low voter turn-out.
