One note. If I choose a SBD for a particular show, I am only going to post an AUD and/or Matrix, if they are worth your time. So if I only link one source for a show, you can assume I thought all the other sources, not worth a listen.

This is by no means a pristine AUD. I would recommend keeping the volume down or learn how to edit audio files, because some of the whistles on this tape nearly shattered my monitor. The instruments are prominent though, which is the most important part of a solid AUD. At times the crowd does drown out the band, but only for a few seconds total. Very listenable to say the least.

The other SBD source available has definitely been stepped on once or twice. This mix is much clearer. The AUD source is most certainly not worth your time. This mix was made to improve on the SBD source playing over the video of the show, which was muddy and wobbly. This one is not.

Notes: This SBD is the only source available. It is much degraded. It is not highly recommended except for the completist.

Sound Quality: 7/10

Notes: This is the only source available. All in all this is a borderline excellent quality AUD for the period. That is until you put it next to a few of Bertrando’s from later in the tour. Phil is virtually cut out of the recording. If you want him, you’ll need to really EQ that bass up. It is a little bit tinny, or maybe the highs are just too prominent. All that said, it picks up the rest of the band very well, with levels right in line with the mix.

There are a few things to note which made posting the SBD, given its quality, a necessity. First, there is a crushing cut a little less than 3 minutes into The Music Never Stopped. If you listen to the tape you’ll understand why I say it’s crushing. The place was literally about to combust from the unrestricted energy that filled the room for the whole 1st set. A cut of a nearly equal tragic nature occurs at 5:35 in Around and Around. It is patched with a tinny flat AUD. Other than that, it is complete. There is a decent amount of audience noise on the recording; however, the instruments come through clean as can be. What makes this my preferred choice is how this source picked up Jerry’s singing. If you listen to the shows before and after this show, Jerry’s voice is a little worn, and loose. The stars aligned for this night though, his voice is perfect, and this AUD picks it up with amazing clarity. When he reaches for a high note, the crowd reaction is huge, and the band seems to react. This AUD is one of the finest examples I’ve ever heard for demonstrating how the attitude of an audience can effect a band.

This is the Charlie Miller SBD re-master. Don’t mistake this though, without question, I am grabbing the AUD of this one. That said, considering the absurd quality of the show itself, I’d probably want a good SBD, if I could have it. Luckily Charlie’s re-master is stellar, and if the AUD wasn’t a monster, there’s no chance it would be the superior of the two.

This is Dick’s Picks 20, this AUD is the only source available. Another AUD that back a young buck would have been thrilled with. The band comes through very clear, and the recording is especially kind to Phil, as his bombing comes through lout and clear.

This SBD is pretty strong but is missing tracks. Charlie Miller was kind enough to post an additional listing to fill those in. And fwiw, the sound quality on the extra tracks is superb. You can find that here,

Picking a source for this was definitely the hardest choice to make from this tour. Two versions of a very strong Jerry Moore AUD, and another taper’s recording, which comes close to besting the Moore tapes. The Vernon AUD has one noticeable flaw that kept it out of the final choice. I listened to about ½ the show from the Vernon AUD and noticed a number of times when the volume was fading in and out. I should say that otherwise the recording is excellent and the fade ins/outs are not extreme at all. Then there were the two versions of the Moore Cassette Master. I was having trouble picking up much of a difference between them at low-medium volume. All I really noticed was the vocals were a little clearer in the older source, and the volume was a higher by a barely noticeable margin. I was about set to give it to the original source when I decided to turn it up LOUD. When I did this the original source started to crack up a bit. The bass was buzzing a little, and the highs just weren’t standing up. Now, this could easily be due to it being MP3, but when I listened to the new Moore source at the same volume it didn’t crack up at all. The bass held its bottom end nicely and the highs were leveled out nicely. So, in case anyone was wondering, that is how I ended up choosing the above source for this show.

The 2 available AUD sources are the same. The AUD is solid, very listenable, but the SBD portion is clearly superior. So, the one with SBD for the 2nd set is the one.

This is one where we got lucky. Not an A quality AUD, but a strong B, maybe even B+. It is a fix of the other AUD source available, and a nice upgrade. Definitely worth grabbing a copy.

This was the only source available. I shouldn’t poopoo it, it is always a treat when there is a listenable AUD available for officially released material. This one is serviceable, but not much more.

AUD Sound Quality: 7.6/10
SBD Sound Quality: 8/10

This is an AUD/SBD composite. The AUD is a top quality Bertrando that holds the highs and lows extremely well for being an MP3. The AUD portion is all of the 1st set. The SBD picks up at Minglewood. Half Step is patched during a reel flip. The remainder of the show is SBD. I would grab this for the SBD portion if I was downloading this show. It is very good quality.

This is another case where it really comes down to personal preference. The SBD portion of the other source is very good quality and it holds up well as an MP3. That said, this is a booming Bertrando AUD. Not as strong as the next night, but still gold for the “AUDs rule” type. I would probably want to grab this whole version to supplement the composite source.

Basically the same as the other two SBDs that circulate. Charlie patched a few spots with Bertrando’s AUD, which is not found on the other 2 sources. He also boosted the signals a bit. Watch out turning this bad boy up, the bass is crisp and booming. Beautiful SBD.

Sound Quality: 8.5/10

This is just another in the long line of stellar Bertrando AUDs. His, more than any other’s, capture the sound of the instruments outputs reverberating off the walls of venue. Most SBDs are incapable of attaining the tangible quality of being in the room that a high quality Bertrando recording does.

Thanks for these.

1976 is one of my favourite years along with 73 for some of the individual highs in it - esp 1976-06-11. I have enjoyed reading your comments as they provided a few more criteria I can apply when I'm listening - eg, loud volume v. low or standard volume, fades etc. (Mostly I'm listening around standard volume.)

I've done the 1976-07-17 - finished the Orpheum run in fact but there's a glitch on the bulletin board which presently won't let me edit the review, and in fact appears to have deleted it, or renedered it invisible, anyway. Kochman is working on it now with the forum support.

FWIW, I went with the earlier of the two matrices:

"AUD 18389: 5

SBD 243: 7+
SBD 34708: 7-

MTX 91827: 8+
MTX 95734: 8-

General Comments

Now the AUD gets bottom billing, but that said, you really do need to listen to at least the first track just to get a feel for what it was like to be there. I speak in a vacuum having never been to a GD concert, but I get a sense of excitement just being in the middle of all that sound and all those people that none of the other versions provide, even the matrices which are intended to do just that. One of the reviews commented that there was a huge speaker box out front that functioned as a subwoofer that tended to over-bass and distort the AUD sounds. Maybe so. Very echoey - at times it sounds like Bobby is singing in a shower box. The AUD also gets you a better idea of what Keith was up to.

The SBD(243) is cleaner, but on the whole, thin: the drums particularly lack depth of sound, while Phil is, in comparison, both more dominant and fuzzy. The major plus from this SBD is Jerry's guitar which I have seldom heard sweeter- it comes through rich and pure and Chris Chappell has taken this quality into both matrices. The later SBD(34708) is not bad but twangier - more of a country/southern sound. Reminds me a touch of some Allman shows, though I'd be hard-pressed to say exactly where and how."

Dave
