Comments: Source: mac > cass (u/k gen) > wav > flac > wav > flac; Lineage: nak dr3 > audacity > cdwav; Second source: sbd: mr> dat > cdr > shn > wav > flac; notes: as Zeb mentions in his notes below, there was some distortion. I have reduced or removed it with some degree of success. The result is very pleasing; I have patched Playin' at approx 0:08 (for approximately 1.5 seconds) and Truckin at 12:36 (for approximately 5 seconds) with the sbd source; I have repaired a considerable number of small drop-outs and partial drop-outs; I have cleaned up the transitions and cross-faded, I also added back the sections that Zeb had faded out, just a personal preference; I decided to include Stella Blue and Saturday Night, from the sbd source, so that the show is complete. Before doing so, I eq'd these tracks so that the sound was more in keeping with the rest of show. I also eq'd the patch in Truckin'; remastering was done with iZotope Ozone and Waves. Hiss reduction with Steinberg Clean.

Comments: This is only a PARTIAL SBD; Lineage: S:MR > cassette > DAT > CD > SHN. TOO contains an Eleven jam, and unlike most versions by this time, the second verse is sung. Unfortunately the recording cuts before the verse is over. This PART is the best source of this PART of the show at the Archive.

Comments: Barely listenable. Source: Source 1: MAC > Reel > Cassette > DAT > CD Recorded by Bill Degen from balcony front row; Source 2: MAC > ? > DAT (supplied by Dave Minor) > CD; this is a remaster of shnid 7924; - there is a small cut in Tennessee Jed at 4:22, which has not previously been noted. This is the best source of this show at the Archive.

Comments: Lineage: SBD> MR> Cass> DAT> CDR> EAC> SHN. From the point of the splice in Rider, all the way through Deal, there is an oscillating fuzziness that sounds like tape waver, reminiscent of how some of the water-damaged Betty tapes sound. It is particularly bad on Deal. Playing reverts to the previous cleaner sound, and the sound is fine until about the 6:11 point in GDTRFB. From here on, there is an oscillating loss of the left channel, again sounding like a problem with tape wavering as it passes over the record head. D1t01 (Big River): intermittent static in right channel 2:34-2:45
D1t02 (Sugaree): occasional right channel static, some soundboard problems
D1t07 (Rider): cut/splice @ 1:57; some tape waver and fuzziness in latter half
D1t09(Tennessee Jed)-D2t01 (Deal): intermittent tape waver/oscillation?
D2t07 (Around And Around): dropout @ 3:39
D3t04 (Wharf Rat): discontinuity/splice @ 7:12
D3t08 (GDTRFB)-10 (OMSN): intermittent fadeout of left channel

Comments: The SBD tape contains Playing In The Band (15:50 with a cut), tomorrow Is Forever, Dark Star> China Cat Sunflower> I Know You Rider (breaks off at 4:02) and Sugar Magnolia. The AUD contains the 1st 4 songs of the 2nd set (Greatest Story> Bertha> the Promised Land, Friend of the Devil) in fairly listenable quality; this tape is very rare but its existence suggests that rumors of a complete AUD of the show are true (it'd be nice to patch the Rider from it). First "Tomorrow Is Forever"

Comments: Lineage: Reel master > ? > cassette > DAT > CDR > EAC > SHN. Known Flaws: transient static occurs throughout the first half of disc 1; the specific cases annotated below are just examples. It does not sound like diginoise, but rather seems likely to be on the source reels. These flaws exist on all known to be circulating soundoard sources of this rare show.If someone has the even rarer aud., It would be nice to patch the rest of Rider in.
d1t03 (Loser): brief static 3:02-3:06; subsecond discontinuity @ 3:49
d1t04 (Black Throated Wind): static 0:22-0:24
d1t08 cut at begining of Tennessee Jed
d2t01 cut during 15:00 minute mark of Playin' in the Band
d3t05 I Know You Rider cuts at 4:02 (rest is missing)

Comments: "26 Miles" tuning before encore - final "You Win Again". The complete show in SBD except Bertha and cuts in Cumberland Blues and Truckin' > Other one Jam. Fairly listenable AUD has various problems. Beginning of Promised Land and 26 Miles and conclusions of Black throated Wind, Big River and Bertha cut. Timing from the SBD except for Cumberland Blues and Truckin' > Other one Jam because of cuts. 1) Weir: We're gonna take a short break. and you'll just hang around here. and we'll be back in just a few minutes. See you then. 2) Weir: thank You. 3) Weir: Listen. I don't know how you'd like it if we stood up here all night and barked orders at you. Stand up sit down stand up stand oh turnaround stand on your hands. Garcia: they'd probably dig it man. 4) Weir(over 26 Miles tuning): Well folks it's real hot you know. We're just getting worn out real easy. So we're gonna do this next tune and then we're gonna leave you with it. OK? 5) Weir: Why thank you folks. See ya'll later. Bye.

Comments: The SBD contains the complete show except Truckin, with Mississippi Halfstep and I Know You Rider missing their conclusions. These flaws can be patched from a good AUD (which does not circulate whole, however). (1) There is a 40 second "Mexican Hat Dance" tuning during the 2nd set between "Brokedown Palace" and "Me & My Uncle"

Comments: The least amount of bass saturation, which is a problem for this show, beyond that, it is really a toss up, all the sources seem pretty fine and equal to me; Source: SBD->MR->DAT->CDA->WAV->SHN->FLAC; Lineage: FLAC->DAW(Bertha)->SHN/CDA; Patch source: UNK.AUD->CASS->???->DAT->WAV->FLAC - Sound D.
This is the best source of this show at the Archive, but it is a close one.

Best Matrix: None available at this time.

Comments: SB> MR> Cassette> DAT> CD; except OMSN SB> MR>cass(2)> DAT> CD; CD> cleanup> SHN; Resource for tapes suggests "It's possibly an FM as there is a WMAL station announcement on the tape"; however, more likely that this is radio station interference with the PA/recording equipment. In conversion from source discs it was necessary to remove 4118-sample gaps from Disc #1 (this corresponds to approx 1/10th of a second, not the 2-second gaps one would expect with TAO) between most tracks. For disc #2, the gaps were 89377 samples (2 seconds + a little bit). Removal of these gaps from discs #1 & #2 left seamless joins. For disc #3, there were 133477 sample-gaps (3-and-a-bit seconds!!), and minor repairs were necessary at each gap to avoid clicks. A very small number of additional clicks and gaps were removed - many remain, especially right at the beginning of disc #1. This is the best source of this show at the Archive, but it is a close one.
