Let's get a list going here...

I believe she didn't appear in 71 at all

12/2/73, 12/6/73, 12/8/73, 12/10/73, 12/12/73, 12/18/73, 12/19/73
7/17/76 (Absent for the 2nd Set)
1/20/79, 1/21/79, 4/22/79 Cool

I wish I could just search it on one of these databases, but I think we can probably round up most of the shows between the lot of us.

71 - 12/31 Sat Night. (well I guess it was really 1/1/72)
73 she pretty much missed late Nov through December since she was having a baby. I know the Boston Music Hall run is sans Donna
In early 79 she left the tour for 2 dates because she couldnt take it anymore.
1/20 Buffalo and 1/21 Detroit

Yeah man, all that pressure to perform.

Imagine if Jerry was like, I can't take it! I will miss a couple of shows.

Laughing
Maybe Billy, in a coke and booze fueled bender, got mean and told her she couldnt sing...but to be fair - she was a self admitted mean, hotel room trashing drunk, with a junked out husband, having an affair with Weir and trying to raise two kids. So for her to take a little "me time" was understandable at that point. Although the vocals on that Buffalo show sound really weird without her..

Agreed that the lyrics sound funky with that 1/20/79 show. Jerry sounds lost as hell trying to sing, seems they grew very custom to having 3 voices.

Despite one of those three voices belonging to a trashed Banshee

Donna herself is an awkward person. She came from the Musel Shoals scene and wasa studio back up singer for Elvis,Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. Than she joined the Dead. She had a stint with JGB (her best work in the Dead realm). Than followed the Heart Of Gold Band. I have never heard any of this. I wouldn't mind it as long as its the recordings with Keith and not her newer version of the band. Last I heard though she was with the Zen Tricksters. Personally, I am not a fan of that band and it reminds me of a bar band. She has also performed with her son Zion in his band Boombox. That is honestly the most interesting band around right now that is Dead related. Well literally related.

All of this being said, WE NEED A DONNA FILTER!!! Well atleast for some very unbearable nights. Ever wonder why they jammed like crazy in 77-78. It was to keep her quiet. A friend of mine that is a fellow Donna disliker told me that as a joke.

12/6/73. it is absolutely and possibly the sickest dark star out there. 43 minutes of exploration. The Dark Star -> Eyes -> segment alone lasts over an hour. Beautiful versions of Loser, TLEO, Deal, El Paso. The China -> MLB -> Rider is especially nice. Overlooked I think. I realize that they played lots of good shows winter 73/74, but this one's a real keeper and i didn't see it on anyone's top 50 lists.

do yourself a favor and don't just skip ahead to the dark star. this show just rolls along and keeps picking up steam and getting better and better. the china ->rider is outstanding. i'm listening to it as i type.

witness, for example, the jam at the end of Greatest Story, minus Donna's "Yeeeaaah!................ YEEEEAAAAAHHH!"

Don't you miss it?

Yeah, me neither. Imagine if Donna had been there. Just sittin on a chair or something while they settle into a 40+ minute dark star!

12/6/73 is if you remeber Koch the EARL of Snoozers. Don't recall the eyes probably because I fell asleep during Dark Star Exclamation Sorry snow and rain this is probably my least favorite DS. Length alone does not necessarily make it good. I find this version totally uninspired.

I should probably add... since I'm listening to 12/6/73 again today... that this show is remarkable for reasons beyond the dark star, which is, i think, reason enough to elevate it to the pantheon of grateful greatness. this show also includes what are perhaps the best versions of china -> rider and HCS ever. certainly top 5 versions of all three songs (dark star, C->R and HCS).

Seriously, tho... "uninspired"??!? wow. i'm speechless. i'm pretty sure that this is the closest the band ever came to splitting the atom with music.

That settles it, I will start listening to the show this week. I know that I hate the 5/11/72 DS, and some love it.
I have not heard this show, that I can remember (which means I have a 50/50 chance of actually having heard it and just forgot).

I will be sure to chime in after I take it in.

Yes, the screaming is some of the worst moments in history.
I had a Donna lover tell me she added to the music, because he was there man!

So, later I posed the question, if she added so much to PITB, what is wrong with the PITB from 12/10/73, what was missing? It stands to reason that if she added something her absence would create a problem...
Never did get an answer.

I listened again to this 12/6/73 DS and realize why I don't like it---It reminds me of that Seastones crap Lesh and Lagin did in 74 . Was it 74? Whatever I never liked it much and this DS reminds me of it.I'm no authority-this is just my opinion

I sort of liked Seastones. There is an album out with the same title, I wonder what that sounds like. Although, I have only listened to live Seastones like 3 times.

Once in a great while I'll give Seastones a listen but for the most part that's when I would go for a bathroom break. The album is pretty much the same. I have a sample that the Fanclub sent me many moons ago along with sample discs of OAITW,Keith and Donna and maybe if memory serves Kingfish

OK, so I listened to 12/6/73...

Most of the show is pretty good. There are some great moments. I would not call it the best HCS or C>R, but definitely worth a listen.

However, I gotta agree with fillmoreeast regarding the Dark Star... I liked the last 8 minutes, everything before that had me wishing I was listening to something else. I kept waiting for something to develop, like with the 5/11/72, and it just never happened... it was upsetting really.

I know it man... Same thing on the 12/6 show, but with other songs. I think that's one of the reasons I like it so much. You're kind of gritting your teeth in anticipation, then she's not there and you breathe a sigh of relief.

So, really, we could say, that Donna's absence actually adds to a performance!
