I asked Swami a question at the listening party, I don't remember really what, but his answer is worth posting here, I copied it and pasted it because it seemed worthwhile, although I did not tell him this. Twisted Evil
I'm sure it's cool.

SwamiGD80s:
Quote:
see - 84 was great because Phil was allowed to really take command of the situation in a way that he had not previously done - except for somewhat in 1979
the early 80s prior to 84 were very guitar-heavy
Jerry was trying to fill every open space
and Bobby trying to keep up
84 was an opening of the door to the next dimension
Phil and Jerry were at the helm - with Brent and Bobby in support

that is the correct structure

Jerry allowed Phil his space finally
which led to more meaningful Garcia lead guitar
well listen to 1983 and it's very different from 1984
Jerry is dominating in 1983
in a way that Phil must respond quickly
hence the cocaine tempo
Phil was great in 1983
but best in 84
love Jerry in 84 too cause it seemed like more than ever the music was
coming from the core of his soul.

Interesting analysis in my book in contrasting the years there.

Definitely good stuff. 84 is his favorite year, and has been for some time, so consider this when reading.

I appreciate that he is able to make distinctions at such a level of detail... whereas I am more limited to... this year just rocks (that I then jazz up with adjectives and adverbs).

So, would you say Phil's best year was 84?
