Specifically, "orbital jams" refers to the 79-80 jamming done pre-drums, that is basically another space...
A common theme within the orbital jam is Brent making a sound as though his keyboard were some kind of shooting star or something... hard to put into words... Phil adds to it as well... listen to these examples and let us know if you find others.

List ALL that you know about, because these are not listed in deadbase, etc...
05/03/79 out of Playin' - this is the first one
05/08/79 between TOO and China Doll (duderino)
05/13/79 out of Truckin'
08/04/79 out of Playin'
08/12/79 out of Eyes
09/04/79 out of He's Gone
10/27/79 out of TOO (chingsinkly)
10/31/79 out of Eyes
11/04/79 out of Terrapin
11/05/79 out of Franklin's Tower
11/09/79 out of He's Gone (rgerbel find)
11/29/79 out of Eyes
12/05/79 out of TOO
12/28/79 out of Playin'
05/12/80 out of He's Gone
06/21/80 out of PITB as they head into drums
11/29/81 out of He's Gone (Zeph)
12/28/83 out of Playin'
I am sure there are more out there, help us list them all.
And, a special thanks to Swami for coining the perfect term.

I'll take an Orbital Jam anytime - some of the finest GD exploratory missions ever conceived.

Let's not forget 12-28-79 Playin-Orbital (that qualifies, right?). Now that's a wild ride!

Two new additions...
11/29/81, found by Zeph, which I thought was the last one until I just recently heard...
12/28/83!

The initial list has been updated.

Well, I think I may have found the first orbital... 5/3/79 out of Playin'. The first show of Brent's first tour, and they nailed it!!! It wasn't hard core spacey, but definitely gets out there toward the end.

I also found one from 5/13/79 out of Truckin' (is this the only one out of Truckin?)... it has a tone to it similar to a Close Encounters jam, but not those notes you would find there. Definitely Garcia inspired, and Brent, in his first tour, was all over it too. This has a more "orbital" feel to it...

So is it safe to say that you are enjoying those May '79 shows?
They are gold!

Definitely! Too bad we don't have some better sources for a few of them, but that's cool.
Jerry was tip top... 79 is my #2 year for Jerry.

When I get back home to the music I will...
Either this one or the following one does have an orbital.

I listened to 5/3/79, the first one I am aware of, before I left home today. Pretty mellow show in general. Nice for you "beauty" fans... personally I like a show with more umph!

Yes, confirmed Orbital in TOO, good call. I will add it to the above listing.
As for the PITB from the next night... judges say... it doesn't reach the stratosphere. Nice jam nevertheless.

Wait... IN the S>F segue?
I know I have heard that S>F a few times (is it the longest?)... I don't specifically recall... I will have to re-investigate that.

5/8/79 between the Other One and China Doll. I'm pretty sure this fits the criteria.

Does the one from 11/9/79 out of Hes Gone fit the criteria? Regardless, it is an excellent jam and Brent plays an important role.

Brent also plays a key role in a really good transition from Dancin into Franklins in this show.

Holy orbital Kochman!!! Rgergel excellent call. The actual orbital was a little shorter than I have heard other times, but Brent meets the third kind here.

And thus it was added to the list of orbits.

I have re-listened to 11/1/79, and decided that the S>F does not really reach the stratosphere, and therefore I have removed it from the list. Sorry DS.

BUT, it is an epic S>F, for sure!!!

Lame!!! That is an orbital. Rather I think of it as one. Brent goes there in the jam.

If anyone else agrees with DS, let me know, and we can do a quick listen together...
Brent does great stuff, but he alone cannot power the ship into the stratosphere, Phil is key.

From the original definition, the orbital was based off of Brent.

Yeah, but a true orbital goes beyond that... Brent being an ingredient that is needed.
Compare that 11/1/79 S>F to the other examples, specifically I will recommend 8/12/79's...

That's probably is my favorite version of PITB, it definitely has an orbital sound to it, but within the context of orbital in this thread, I think it's just PITB being PITB.
