Sir, it is the side of "right" in this case.
I will often accept that there are better versions of most songs, in everyone's differing tastes, and we all have our own favorites...but some are empirical truths... Such as this Sugaree. It is just that sick.

10/16/77, 10/17/83 and 5/9/79 Razz

Surprised no one mention 4/19/83 Orono Me. Not as long as Lake Placid but just as meaty. No Board of the second set in the Archive, but there is a version of it on the tapers section at the Dead's offical site.

Good call - - that is a rager as well.
I just listened to 10/16/77 Sugaree (happy anniversary 10/16..). Amazing, unbeleivable, orgasmic... Shocked

That 10/16/77 is angry for sure, the one from a week earlier aint bad either. But, when it comes to a '77 Sugaree, nothing really says I love you quite like 5/19/77.
Three beauties from '78 are 2/1/78(under 10 minutes, you know what that means), 12/16/78 and 12/28/78.

6/21/80 has always been a favorite of mine too.
Oh yeah, I like 4/7/91 ALOT Shocked

Do JGB shows count? There are a plenty of Jerry Shows that had some extra helping Sugaree's in them.

The 3/1/80 JGB early show Capitol Theater, NJ has what I think is the definitve version,. It has nice strong vocals and some great Garcia rolls. It was a well circulated FM recording.

Bump.

Is it really necessary to duplicate favorite song threads? I think the point of the other thread was more the humor of how such threads predictably unfold.

Favorite versions?

11-26-82 Montego Bay
08-26-80 Cleveland, OH
02-26-77 Swing Auditorium Exclamation

And of course the 12-28-79.

Im always a sucker for One from the Vault Sugaree.....I do skip the tune some, but not too much......I also would say my personal fav is 12/19/75 JGB......There is just somethin about those '75 JGB versions that make Sugaree better...Maybe its Nicky on the keys.....

The Sugareee from 09-06-80 is as good as any other. The one from Rochester a few days prior is overrated.

I also think 5-19-77 is a bit overrated.

I dig the 9/2/80 Rochester one, but you might be right about 9/6.
Some other smoking Sugarees worthy of mention:
1/11/79
5/13/79 Portland, ME
7/1/79 Seattle
8/14/81 Seattle

two mid-80's versions that are average length, but make a major statement:
3/25/85 Springfield
4/3/87 Worcester

May of 77 has 4 Sugarees that are perhaps equally worthy of top consideration, and still one or two I haven't yet heard. But 5-5, 5-22, 5-26, and 5-28 are each top knotch.

Digression: This thread started with 12-13-80, which also has one of the better renditions of Scarlet>Fire, slightly better than the excellent 2-27-81 in fact. There may be one in between those two, I haven't checked.

Dave I would like to pick this show for an LP sometime soon - would love to have you in attendance whenever that may be.

Yeah, I'm generally not around on weekend nights, as you might have guessed.
This weekend definitely not but possibly next weekend. Daytime partying at "Honfest" our overblown street fest in the neighborhood but likely will be spent and chilling at home at night.
Both of the 84 Hartford shows are really good but under the radar. Look at the setlist from the night before!!!
BTW, I have not had a chance to listen to the Sugaree - I had my head in 6/3/76
I plan on listening tomorrow; which source did you listen to? - BTW, 10/14 has the dubious distinction of having the first of many Bucket>Sugaree openers. Smile

I just discovered this one but 10/15/1976 is a scorcher!! Jerry takes the 3rd jam and just explodes, climbing this mountain of awsomeness!! This version is a huge stepping stone towards what the song would become in 77'.
