Feel free to add other songs I missed, or debate me...
Some songs were played better, IMO, in certain eras.
Here is a basic list.
Dancin' in the Streets - 77-79
Early Dancins were lacking, but if you don't like Disco Dead, stay away from the above. 80s Dancins were generally short and sometimes ok.
Ramble on Rose - Golden Era (72-44)
A snoozer post retirement. Pre-retirement, in the Golden Era, it was a song I enjoy.
TN Jed... see above.
Truckin' - 1972
While this song could be solid on any given Sunday, I prefer when it was a heavy jam vehicle... 72 in particular.
HC Sunshine - 73-74
No doubt. The rebirth was fine, but the short, no jams but lots of frills isn't as interesting by a long shot.
Deal - Most of Brent Era
I believe this got re-arranged, correct me, in 81? They added a bunch of chord change based jams to the end.
Big RR... See above.
Slipknot - 1977+
The 76 versions go into a drums/space thing that is long but boring, not what I want in a slip.
FOTD - Golden Era
Give me the Golden Era versions, in general. The 80s were way slowed down. Sometimes still enjoyable, but I prefer it fast.
TLEO... see above.
PITB - 1972
his is where we get the most jammed out, driven versions, sometimes with a Tiger Jam imbedded. It stayed solid throughout after the early days when it was just a quicky (70-71).
Eyes - Too Close to Call!
Two different beasts pre and post retirement. Both are enjoyable.
Terrapin - 87, 90, 93
I often call 93 the Year of the Turtle.
Dark Star - Golden Era
In the end, I got to go with the Golden Era (72 in particular) versions over the Pigpen and post retirements. In the GE, you may also find yourself the victim of a Tiger attack.
Minglewood - Much of Brent Era
I believe this was re-arranged in 83? Correct me if incorrect. Anyhow, they added another jam segment, which I call the "Culmination Jam". After everyone has their turn, they all jam out together... culminating.
GSET - Golden Era
The earlier in the GE, the better, generally speaking.
I will add to this at some point.
