Ok, time for some negativity...
Look, I've been listening to 10/26/89 recently, the fabled Miami Dark Star... I think it sucks tail pipe. It's boring, and falls apart too often. Sure, there are some creepy and/or cool moments, but over all, I consider it a stinker.
The Estimated>Blow Away before it, on the other hand, is pretty solid.
Yes, fake piano loses to real piano every time...
I don't get it either, at that point, money should not have been an issue... Brent could clearly play regular piano, etc...
The 80s were an era of Bad Sounds and Surrender To The Technology.
Zappa played a tour in 1984, I'd say it wasn't too shabby, except for Chad Wackerman's electric drum sound - which drags every tape and every release down. By 1988 Zapa had learnt the lesson, and even hired a bunch of saliva shiny bona fide brass palyers and let Chad play real drums ... but then FZ went beserk with samples... ah yes the seductive timestamping technology.
