I'm, by no means, a huge Sci-Fi fan (I like Stars Wars, not so into Star Trek, for example)...
However, I really want to highly recommend the entire series of Battlestar Galactica (from 2004 I think?). It's available on Netflix.

Very solid show, so much so that I'm taking the time to recommend it to anyone who will listen to me about it. Acting is good, with Edward James Olmos stealing the show... the story is awesome, lots of twists and intrigue... and it is visually pretty awesome. More importantly, it is philosophical (part of the story line), and really inspired some awesome thoughts.

Watch it...

I'll have to check it out, I'd been avoiding it because I still had a bad taste in my mouth from the lame Lorne Greene version.

Welcome aboard!
Yes, I avoided it for the exact same reason... for years.
I finally just took the leap.
The first two episodes were actually a mini-series, and mainly set the stage for the epic story that is to follow.

Sort of like the original Lorne Greene series, 2 hour pilot was a theatrical release outside the US. I don't have netflix, but one of my brothers does, he likely has it already, as he was a nut for the original. So all the special effects budget was blown on the pilot episode, and, other than some blinking tin cans, the rest of the series just used the same effects over and over.

This one has some good special effects, but the story line is really more important.
The effects are definitely good enough to be plausible, etc.

Reminds me of the scene from a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, where Larry and Richard Lewis sit in their shrink's waiting room, talking about how they should get rid of him cause he was spotted wearing a speed-o at a beach by Larry. When the shrink comes out of his office they quickly change the subject and Larry says to Richard, as he's leaving, 'What did you say the name of that book was? battlestar Galactica? I'll check it out". Richard claims to have no idea what Larry is talking about.
