So I listen to this podcast every week called the shakedown stream every week on Tuesday nights. The cool thing about this podcast is that he plays a full dead show, but beyond that the actual podcast is between four and five hours because he also plays different dead stuff before and after the show. It's nice because [CENSORED] gets mixed up for you a little bit not knowing all the time what you are going to hear. Anyhow the disc jockey came up with a question which I found interesting and I figured I would post it hear as a poll and see where you all stand. Also sorry I haven't been posting lately, but with it being the fourth quarter and all, things have been quite hectic at work, and I barely get time to listen to a whole show everyday, which on most days is my only sanity. So let's get on with the poll, and after you answer it would be really cool to hear why you answered the way you did.

I picked being a help, slipknot, franklins head. I have always said that in my opinion the Grateful Dead did not become the Grateful Dead until blues for Allah came out. That being said I have to say that I seriously enjoy the China/Riders from 1974 because they also had such a nice jazzy, kind of funky vibe to them. I was at the show on 10/08/89 and when the broke out help, slip, franklins at the beginning if the second set it was totally amazing, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I witnessed the 10/08 ans 10/09/89 shows all the time. I remember when I first got into the Grateful Dead I would listen to whatever I could get my hands on. When I finally got a copy of Blues for Allah though, that album just blew me away. They always played it with so much energy, even on the album version and I was hooked right there. Hopefully this can turn into a great discussion.
Peace And b Wild my fellow heads......
Mike

I started as a S>F head, for sure... with Cornell 77 being the first one I really sank my teeth into the GD with...

However, once I worked on my H>S>F project, for which all the data was lost when my HD crashed, I was signed sealed and delivered to that trifecta of glory (for good?).

I don't think I answered the poll, is it closed? Right now I'd probably say Scarlet>Fire. For a long time I wasn't that into Fire. The last few years that combo has been my favorite though.

I hate to see China>Rider get shafted, that's one of their greatest things.

These days I need to be in the mood for H/S/F but of course it's mighty.

Maybe I'd say I was a "Dark Star" head....a lot of folks around here wouldn't, though. No accounting for taste...

Koch,
I think thats awesome. I can't figure out why more people are not responding to this post. I think it is a rather cool question that could lead to a lot of discussion....but that's just my opinion.

I voted for "none" ... I'm a Ripple guy (The Reckoning version) ... Very Happy

Not kidding ... this tune gives me some peace of mind ... it is so dear to my heart. Its mystical. When I think of the Jerry this is the tune which comes to my mind.

After careful consideration, I went with H/S/F Deadhead - although I've been on a major China/Rider kick the last couple of years. Why H/S/F then?

Because it's the only combo with a spacey interlude built in. Scarlet-Fire can occasionally get spacey, but by definition Slipknot contains a spacey jam - and that sets it apart for me. I have always identified with the dark and spacey aspect of the GD.

Dark Star, TOO kind of guy. So maybe I woulf fall under China/Rider. In terms of what I like best; I can honestly say I like it all. I listen to 68>74 probably more than the other time frames, but that's not to say I don't enjoy them. Coming here for the last few years really helped me stretch to be more open to different periods. I was missing out on a lot of good music! Lately I can't get enough of 5/16/81. Great show Cool

I would also say Ripple, it's my favorite song by any band. But of the options given I would go with China->Rider. Nothing quite like the Jam between these 2 songs definetly gets me moving.

Not surprisingly, I am with Swami on this one...

I started as S>F...

I already wrote this though... oops!

I'd have to say I'm a Dark Star deadhead. Particularly the DS>StStephen>11>LL and DS>StS>NFA>LL years of '68-'70.

Alligator > Caution is high on my list too.

I just now saw this - and figured out how to respond Embarassed

I picked none of above, b/c I think what really got me was the splice jams. My first tape I heard/got was 6/23/76. I had seen a show at that point, but when I heard that Stephen>Not Fade>Stephen & the Wheel from that show... That was it for me. I can not tell you how many times I made my buddy play that for me when I would go and hang out in his room. The wooden sound of that era really got me. The next thing I progressed right away to (it was '84) were the Playin' splice jams. The Dead's ability to drop seamlessly from one song to the next AND BACK was it for me. You really had to pay attention to figure out when you were in the next tune. Then I got to the point where I knew before they were in it what they were going to do next. A room with a view Smile

I'm a Good Lovin', Dark Star, That's It For The Other One, Turn On Your Lovelight kind of dead head.. IMO, the real Grateful Dead died with Pigpen, but what followed wasn't too shabby, still ain't too shabby.
