I am hereby proposing the Eastern United States Deadhead Summit (E.U.S.D.S.), to be held Memorial Day weekend 2011 near the fine town of Oak Hill, WV. I propose the following organization to help host this event:

The specific rafting I recommend is the Lower New River.

And furthermore lay out potential itenerary:

Saturday, May 28th: Meet 6 PM, set up camp. Party.
Sunday, May 29th: River rafting all day with River Expeditions
Music and socializing at campground in evening.
Monday, May 30th: Pack up and ship out.

There has been talk of trying an earlier weekend, and this is still a possibility, however I submit that there advantages to Memorial Day. Namely, more time to get the money together for expenses, and a holiday to lessen the need for taking time off of work. We would most likely be driving, which is about a 10-hour trip.

As for the cost, I was told on the phone that there is a special for 2 nights of camping, a day of rafting, and several meals provided - all for $99 per person. For $99 this seems to me a great value! Not to mention, there is a hot tub located at the campground facility, along with I believe a lounge that serves alcohol. Check out the link above and feel free to call yourselves for more information.

Our Captain intimated that he wouldn't be able to make it at all unless his other plans were canceled, so it wouldn't make a difference in his attendance if we planned for an earlier weekend. In terms of how busy it will be - yes there will be a lot of people - but then again I bet any weekend in May will be pretty busy around there. It's still out in beautiful West Virginia, so in terms of being busy - it will still be pretty isolated and relaxing compared to many other events on the holiday weekend. Traffic shouldn't be much of an issue.

I'd love to go, but already have tickets for Delfest that weekend - I've gone down the lower Gauley twice and the Upper Gauley once Shocked Shocked Shocked. Never been down the New River but heard it is pretty nice, especially in Spring and if you have anyone that inexperienced that is the easiest one- New River Gorge is beautiful too. Good choice on the rafting company - Rivers is the one we use - nice campground, good guides. Wife and I are contemplating a rafting trip to the Cheat River Canyon earlier in May (a little closer than the New/Gauley for us).

Yes, if my trip to Mexico doesn't happen, I will probably come to this... but as it stands I cannot, at this time, commit.

That sounds like a great trip. Unfortunately, I can't justify 20 hours each way in the car to get there and back. Have fun everyone!

If you go, there is a pretty good BBQ joint in Fayettville called Dirty Ernies.

Would like to see it not scheduled on Memorial Day, but you can count me in.

Any idea if we can bring our own booze(glass bottles)?

If you stay at their campground, they are totally cool with it (I think-both times I stayed at Rivers I got pretty hammered on bourbon-n-beer). And I am pretty sure they have a bar on site. Obviously no brewskis on the river......

So Gopher I am really glad you are planning to come to the rafting thing even though it is over Memorial Day, but I don't understand what you mean about it being a great opportunity to meet with friends nad family. Is that not what we are doing? Is it that you mean that this thing competes with other events? I'm just confused.

Yep

But this trumps other offerings, that's for sure Smile

So is this thing going to happen? What do you all think? I was hoping for more interest and I'm worried about the drive, it's about 9 hours and I would drive by myself so I'm wondering how this will pan out?

LOL...If nobody showed up to a Memorial Day Weekend Reunion, did it really happen at all? Rolling Eyes I would be calling on my cell phone every 30 miles or so to see if it's still on Sug.

I would go just for Dirty Ernie's. But it's way too long of a drive from Monterey.

We are still planning to go - rafting and camping is just what the Doctor is ordering. Honestly if 6-8 people total were to be there (including us) that would be a nice little crowd. I hope there will be at least 5 or 6 of us...

My issue, at this point, is the cost of the flight and/or the amount of hours driving it would take. I really can't abide either... I mean, I could fly to Europe for that much! And, no way can I drive two days each way.

NO FAIR!! Evil or Very Mad
I won't be able to make this Crying or Very sad

Head gasket is blown(drive about 4 miles till the engine starts over heating) and I now need to buy a new car...going with a 99 Toyota Camery via father consulting....anything that has to do with cars I request him to be my consulter? Why not? Yeah, men need to grow up, but you are never too old for a consultant, advisor, teacher, etc

So pissssed, been dying to meet some of you guys! How many failed attempts is it going to take for me to fnally catch up with some of you....Dude and SnR, I understand you guys are not bachelor's and have to constantly compromise.......,but we really need get together sometime mid Spring Cool Maybe for a show at the 8/X10?

If this whole party gets shut down cause of lack of interest, ....I really think Gratefulfest at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park outside of Cleveland(4th of July Weekend) would be a great alternatives for us to get together, hear some excellent music, eat great foods, drink fine booze(it's BYOB, just no glass) observe some beautiful women(well hopefully it goes beyond observing) and camp with fellow LSPers, a chance for us to finally get to know the person behind the screen . Just a heads up i'm WAY more awesome online than real life Wink

Great list of music this year(3 nights DSO,New Riders, Keller Williams, Melvin w/ JGB, Railroad Earth, Cornmeal, and more! Wonderful people, gorgeoous women in skirts and hula-hoops, there shouldn't be too many too many shady wooks, very affordable, and don't forget about the lake's whose limitations include swimming/rafting, paddle boats,/jumping off of cliffs!! I believe it is 95 dollars a person for FOUR nights of camping, you gotta see this place to believe how perfect it is for festivals. And I love how security is ALL over the trails, but they are just there to make sure everybody is safe and able to find their campsite. They turn a blind eye to drug use.

What's tricky is that the place can be quite the continuous maze, it can take sooo long to find your campsite if you do not have a great flash light or have failed to set up iconable landmarks near your site....don't even both checking out the webpage, it's so out of dated.
By the way , at least last time I was there, there is re-entry back into the festival if you decide to do someone off grounds on a Saturday morning.

Gratefullest politicization

Oh yeah, i'm getting a new vehicle!

Trying to get $600 for my non-head gasket, high mileage 98 Legacy GT, it obviously needs a head gasket, needs breaks really bad, auto body is about a C+..
Here's what the new ride looks like, $3,875 with 67k miles on, picking it up Saturday. I'm completely paying for this, but man it feels great to do all private banking through my dad Smile He's a good dad! Hope to have it paid off in a year and a half. I wish I lived somewhere I didn't need a car! Than again, having a vehicle is a pretty powerful, and convenient thing...and dependable affordable ones wiill always be on the market! A big reason why when I get new cars I have them put under my dad's name so we can keep huh hush to the DUI I received 2 years ago.

I still kind of think this is a downgrade from my 98 Subaru Legacy , but I beat the hell out of it(in a bad way, I neglected it)....thought I was going to be a Subaru lifer!!! We'll meet again Subaru! Selling this with 155k miles on it, sold my 96 legacy about 4 years ago, that had 250k
Oh well. That' what happens when you drive 100+ miles a day(Oct '10 thru Feb '11), as well as do work out of yout car idling for up to 4 hours a day and never taking the time to do simple maintenance...errrr one day I'll learn.

My dad gets upset when I don't understand car stuf...so I just fire up a computer era anecdote.....of course he's lost...different eras. It seems like the public's overall knowledge of cars/basic mechanic stuff is down, it's a shame!

Okay end of rant

Hope you enjoyed it,because I had fun rambling!

Here are some new pictures of my car (this is my facebook...i don't care or want to useFB),lol, but i'll share my pic's with me sailor's Smile

Am I the only one who that know matter how much their income, refuse to drive around the type of car that just screams, 'hey look at this, guess how many grand this was'?

Then again i've never yet to really been fed the temptation. But I do know I would feel like a major too doofus driving around some sports/luxary car that cost more than 80k.

I hope those cowards driving around in those cars really goes make them happy...

Because my guess is that their sense of well being is held together by shambles. . Adulatory, insane debt, dreadful parental practices, spending [CENSORED] loads of money just so your family will leave you alone(Here's 50 grand Timmy, have fun at summer camp!!!), etc
I wouldn't ever consider buying a brand new car, even if I was still I was making slightly 'happy' money for at LEAST 5 years.

Call the calvary/Correction Police

Sorry to hear that Gopher. I booked our rafting and camping trip and definitely am excited to get out there. I'm going to assume at this point that no-one else is going, which doesn't surprise me in the least bit.

Thanks for askin man - everyone bailed out so it was just my wife and myself, but the river was raging so the rafting was awesome. Perfect weather the water was great, and camping there was cool. They also had a bar on site. Everyone missed out, as this would have been a perfect opportunity to convene and celebrate our favorite band.

Anyone up for Mt. McKinley (near Asheville, North Carolina - highest point East of the Mississippi) in early August? Meet at the summit!

Thanks for the update Swami! At least someone went and had a good time. It's too bad you are located so far east. I'd love a nice casual day or two spent hanging out with some great tunes and a few like minded "Sailors."
