3-31-85. Sucks. You could argue it's fun, but it's probably too embarrassing to be fun. You'd think a band that was together 20 years, even one that refused to rehearse even when introducing a new song, could have laid this down a little better.

I totally disagree. I was at this show (lucas was too) and the place went nuts, and the band totally fed off the energy. Yeah it is a little sloppy but rocks the [CENSORED] out.
Cumberland County CC levitated I am pretty sure. Watch the video on you tube. It's nuts. Also this tune (like Satisfaction, Gloria, early versions of GImme Some Lovin) were generally loose, garage-y affairs.
Also this was not the breakout for this tune. I think they broke it out during the 84 NYE run and played it once earlier in 85. The best version IMO is 6/25/85 Blossom.

OK, I watched the video. I can totally see it your way, although I'm not quite exactly converted...

I agree. That's a pretty good show all the way through. From 6/22 through 7/1 you have a pretty strong run of shows. They make a pretty good capsule of what '85 is all about IMO.

I'm a little split on this show. The reverse Playin is a freakin disgrace! I caught some heat for posting it was an abortion over at LMA and I'm sticking to that. Having said that, though they went thermonuclear on the Day Tripper and it was simply amazing. As Dude said the place pretty much levitated. It still stands as one of my favorite personal highlights of shows I attended.

I don't get the hate of the reverse playing... and please don't quote Bobby, because his opinion is hardly one I consider...
He sings Looks Like Rain after all, so class is not something he's big on. Do love the short shorts and the Lacoste shirts though!

The hate comes from the fact that they fucked up bad! I was close enough to the stage to see them kind of looking at eachother with this collective look of indecision. Jerry didn't want to take a turn, Bobby had no idea what he wanted to do, Brent was left alone as always and Phil was just going to follow whomever made the first move. The result is a mess and that is why they went back into Playin proper. It wasn't done on purpose to make a statement it was the result of a massive [CENSORED] up. Jerry knew it and the Day Tripper was him saving things by pulling that out of his bag o trix!

Interesting... you were there, so I must defer to that...
I remember hearing it a few times and thinking it was fine. They went out on a limb... but you are making it sound as if the whole thing was an accidental trainwreck... is that the case?

I was there too, and after they did the Playin' reprise, there was a pause of "what do we do next" and so Bob went into the beginning of Playin'. I was not close up so I didn't see the reactions of the band, but I thought they pulled it off and it was something different. One of the coolest things about this show is the Jerry/Drums jam. Very "Hamza"-ish and he is on stage for most of drumz.

So, conflicting reports abound!
That's interesting...
Was anyone sober at this show? hahaha

I was about 20 deep in front of Bobby. It was a trainwreck. There is also a pause right before they went into Day Tripper as well. No one wanted to make a call and Garcia just kind of went for it at that point.

I was sober for this show so my memory of it is pretty solid. Yes it was interesting but it was sloppy. Still a great time though!!!

I too, was relatively sober at this show. Some pre-show beers a little smoke but no "rocket fuel". I thought the first set was pretty good this night - TMNS opener, Candyman, Loser.... I went the next night too and was a little disappointed - but in retrospect it is a pretty rockin show. One of the fastest Eyes ever. Shocked
