So if any of you (and I'm sure a bunch if you have) I have a friend that I recently turned onto the dead. As with myself, and I'm sure many others out there, the dead have in one way or another pulled us from some very dark places. That being said my friend who I love like a brother is in a reeler DARK place right now. Btw this "friend" is really a friend and not myself, because i have nothing to hide and I would tell you all completely and honestly how I was feeling because I truly believe we are a giant family. Anyhow he is in a dark place right now and can't sop listening to fire on the mt. I want to take ten great fire on the mts and mix them all together for him so he has one giant fire to listen to. I do t care if they are official releases, or boots but any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated. Anything you think is special, or any fires that go into jams would be great. So help me out her brothers,,,,,,,10 of the best fire on the mountains,,,,,

Please try to place the threads in the proper area... it really helps everyone else if they can look in focused places for focused information such as you are requesting.

I'm still not capable to indicate single shows but right now I can say that I prefer the 77 era S>F the "uau-uau" effects on FoM and the long (slowpaced) jams of this era are simply hypnotic.

My real dilema is Scarlet OR FoM? I might star a theread about it with a poll question!

But Duderino, don't you think 4-24-78 is marred by the horrible screeching noises Bobby is making during the solos? A pet peeve of mine...

Yep, one of those "perfect" versions.

It is certainly long... I will admit at times there seems to be some aimless noodling, but overall, it is definitely a fun ride!

Don't get me wrong, I love it... but I do recall some aimless noodles. It's something like 35 minutes.
I think I may have been overstating originally rather than now being influenced.

Yeah, I just don't know. For my part, I feel I've been influenced and can't get out of it now. I used to think it was one of the best ever but now I can't recapture that way of hearing it.

Alright I'm gonna step up to the plate here...

08-05-79 Oakland
05-02-81 Philly Spectrum
11-26-82 Montego Bay
06-27-83 Poplar Creek
04-13-84 Hampton
09-15-85 Chula Vista
08-15-87 Telluride
03-27-88 Hampton
03-27-91 Nassau
12-19-93 Oakland

Ok that was painful - no more of these exercises for a while...

3-10-81 has sunk somewhat in my estimation. The best ever is probably 2-5-78.

If that's the best ever than I'm a snarling reptile that appears to be biting myself.

Well I randomly chose one from my list above, 9/15/85 Chula Vista, CA. It is also not the best ever, but I think it stacks up pretty good against the overrated Cedar Falls 2/5/78. So here are my mini-reviews and synopsis after listening to both versions this morning.

Chula Vista: Jerry and Phil wandering into the theme with chopstick Brent on board. Nice Jerry breakdown in the 2nd minute of intro, then 1st verse. Decent Jerry solo with proper distortion, and nice crisp entry into theme for 2nd verse. At around 7:30 Jerry achieves full noodling, and a higher peak is reached for verse 3 entry. Great Kermit Jerry vocal in the 3rd verse. Nice high end Jerry and low Phil contrast in the final jam, with some nice drum rolls in the background. Brent chopsticks with the Jerry Delight special brings some bonus Lo Mein guitar to close out a hot dish of Scarlet-Fire.

Regarding 2/5/78 Cedar Falls, it is too long and I must say somewhat boring. The minimalist, breakdown intro by Jerry is pretty nice - but Billy's drumbeat is too bell-bottomey for me, and Keith's piano is as uninspired as ever. Jerry manages a decent solo after the 1st solo break but between 10 and 11 minutes in they are pretty much out of energy and out of steam. After the final verse Jerry finally busts out the Terrapin guitar tone which always works well in Fire. Bobby eventually accompanies Jer with some mild fanning. And where is Phil? Honestly not where you would want him to be in a best-ever version.

Sometimes I think a long Fire on the Mountain (16+ minutes) is indicative of a low-energy show, because it takes them longer to reach the necessary peaks. By contrast, a high-energy show (which I prefer) reaches peaks faster and this results in shorter more compact versions (10-15 minutes). Just a theory.

I admit to my 80s bias, but in 2/5/78 as with so many other 77 and 78 versions, the keyboard section is awful, the drums are not to my liking, and the guitars are under-distorted. But at least when Phil was into it they could still crank out a solid version...not enough Lesh at Cedar Falls. I give the nod to Chula Vista, and countless other 80s performances of Fire.

You have a point with Phil. I think Keith is fine as an added texture on this version, and Brent can be too obtrusive. But the guitar tone is where we differ here, I think the 1978 sound is the bomb when Jerry plays with a more clean sound in Fire. Also Bobby doesn't obtrude too much on this one, on this song he seems to do more harm than good when he pipes in. I will listen to Chula Vista even though it was chosen randomly from a list.
