So tell me guys.....what so do you think has the best stand alone eyes of the world. It has always been one of my favorite songs but lately I can't stop listening to it. I'm looking for a show with the longest version, as well as a shown with a nice jazzy version that just jams out and puts your mind in other spaces that you didn't know existed.....

11/5/79 is damn good, for sure...

There are so many I love though, it's a hard question...

83 has some really fast paced version that I like, especially in October.

2/9/73 is awesome, for a first effort to come out like that! Later in the year you get the 11/11/73 Dark Star>MLB Jam>Eyes>China Doll that never ceases to amaze me.

10-31-83 Marin County - get in the Halloween spirit!

Sometimes I feel I'm beating a "Dead horse" with this one, but whenever I try to pick a different favorite Eyes I get a panicked feeling like falling a sleep while driving. Stay the course with the Bunny: 10/31/83. Nothing exotic or orbital here, but the most excellent execution of all-time.

I second 8/6/74. Listened to DP 31 the other day. good lord....

Tizi - they played Eyes 3 times that run. 10/19/74 is my favorite

A great Eyes is 10/14/83. Granted it is not "standalone" but it is a monster.

Fall 73 was a ridiculous time for Eyes: they had found the perfect groove and Jerry was starting to really dig in and make every note count: 10/19, 10/25, 10/29, 10/20, and 11/11 are all incredible. I actually feel like some of the 74 megatron Eyes can feel a little "forced," like they're almost pushing too hard. The later 74 ones can feel like this to me... though I second 10/19 winterland as being an exemplar. I think that all the June 74 Eyes are phenomenal, though, and all pretty different from each other.

6/9/76 is the best Eyes of 1976, imho (18 minutes!), though 7/17 is also gorgeous. It's hard to argue with Englishtown as being the best of 77, though I think that 2/26 and 10/11 deserve equal attention. And while I do love 9/2/78, I think that 2/3/78 is an absolute powerhouse.

Nothing like October 83. 10/14/83 has to be my favorite Eyes from the month. Its speedy but they slow it down at points compared to most of the Brent era versions.

That stretch is where I find my favorite Eyes, 6/18/74.

And the stand alone version, encored on 6/26/74, is a pretty good self contained piece from that wonderful month.

They're all great! 6/8 is pretty overlooked (and they do get so out of tune at the end that they have to stop playing), but the meat of the song is exquisite. 6/16 is a little more ragged than 6/18, but a hotter jam imho, plus that wild transition into Big River. Then 6/30 is the jammiest of the bunch, with an extra long intro and that coo Jerry/Keith space at the end.

A hell of a month Smile

Most of the Eyes i enjoy most i find in my favorite era that being 73-74 with Billy dancing solo, Phils heavy post verse debochary, the jamming leading up to the jazzy proto-milkin the turkey breakdown and of coarse that turkey being milked. I love the 74 versions, 2/23 although ive only had a few listens was quite strong, 6/16 is killer, that whole show is definatly one of my favorite dead shows of all time its just one cokedout monster of a show sooo damn good, all the june ones are great i love 6/30 for its beautiful intro and spacey outro. 10-19 is my second favorite eyes of all time, absolutely sublime.

73 versions are my favorite(total favorite year bias though) theres too many good ones to choose from but wow man 8-1 is the shit, Garcia played his heart out to the crowd they had handedout those 3x5's to, that Dark Star arouses some pretty powerful thoughts/feelings of life nearly every time.

As for the fall 10-25 is REALLY good, that goes for the whole show as well, not a moment of it wasnt the dead at pretty much their best IMO. 10-30 i must say is very tight as well as the fabled 11-11. 11-11's DS>MLB>Eyes is what dreams are made of.

I can never really make up my mind along the lines of "favorite" with most things dead related, but in this case i know exactly "the one" for my soul

September 7, 1973 is my favorite, so damn tight but very jammy, ending in the last minute or so of what i can only describe as a musical orgasm. Pretty sure uve all heard this one its a bonus track on wake, but if u havnt heard it in awhile seriously give it a listen

Yes, the fabled 11/11/73...
I love the prototype jamming they do in 73... it eventually becomes Slipknot, does it not? A few years later I mean.

I also agree about Billy dancing on the drums during this period... he is just fluid...

I love both of these and think the one from 6/9 is a stronger one. However, I just love the unique groove in the outro from 7/17 even though it is somewhat repetitive without a lot of variation. It just gets to me. Both may be in my top 5 if I were to systematically think about it.

2/15/1973 Dark Star->Eyes:
Only the second time they played Eyes and it seems like they've been playing it for years.!! The transition between Dark Star->Eyes is probably some of the most beautiful music ever created. A very patient, delicate and sublime jam sequence. Perfect for a Sunday morning!

Interesting, I have always felt like they did a better job at 2/9/73... perhaps I need to give the two some head to head challenge...

I'm kind of partial to 2/15/73 it was my first Dead tape, lot's of good memories
sitting in the woods with a phat bowl listening to this one! Another one that
comes to mind is 6/28/76, Eyes-> Happiness is Drumming (Fire On The
Mountain Jam!!)With a super extended intro in Eyes, over 6 minutes of jamming
before the lyrics actually start.

8/13/75 has an underrated Eyes - probably should be at least mentioned in the conversation., the sequence Eyes-Drumz-Stronger Than Dirt being absolute solid gold.

Most 1974 versions would top my list of best "Eyes of the World." This song was meant for a single drummer and Bill K tore it up every chance he got.

Aside from the 1974 versions, I also love the 1973-09-26 (Buffalo) version for many reasons, especially with special guests Martin Fierro and Joe Ellis on trumpet and sax.

I definitely love the 11-11-1973 and also the 9-26-1973 versions but the 1974's are my favorite style and execution. 5-21-1974 just struck me today, check it out. It was far enough into the year where Jerry was I'm mid-season-form but wasn't too physically exhausted yet like some of the shows that happened later in the year.
