Why did they drop this song?! This has to be my favorite tune born in the post-brent era. I heard this show for the first time at random ( I was just searching shows from cities I've lived in) and am really digging the whole thing.

I don't know, but to me at least, this was a JGB song. Don't get me wrong, it was cool to get at a Dead show but there are so many good, definitive readings by JGB, that it was hard for me to get into the Dead version. Kind of like Mission in the Rain. Great to see the boys break into it..but it was solidified with JGB. Not that there are many tunes that both bands covered, but I tend to like the JGB versions of tunes better. Reubin, They Love Eachother, Sugaree, Misssion and Knockin are my choices. All better than their Dead counterpart! The Wheel goes to the Dead hands down!! Deal is arguable...

I think Sugaree and Deal will make the biggest argument here. But there are more tunes to make points on. Flame away ya'll/...

Never knew this was a JGB song before so I can't really compare. But I couldn't see this song working as well without 2 drummers in the mix, and without Hornsbey. Both add so much to it. Give me a good version to prove me wrong though.

I agree with you on Sugaree, Misssion and Knockin. This is blasphemous but I think the album version of "The Wheel"is a tad bit better then its Dead counterpart.

I love the Garcia/Kahn version from the Prison Show, 5/5/82. Jerry's intro is classic.

We have a winner!!! That version is so freaking beauitful and perfect.

The 80's versions can be a little hurried. But he dropped it for a couple of years. Starting in 89 it came back and stayed in rotation. Dec 1 1989 was it's comeback ( after a two year layoff.) It seemed to mellow a bit. It made a few rare appearences in 1990. 8/7/90 The Warfield is a good version if you can find the recording. ( it's out there ).

After those 90 versions it stayed in the JGB rotation. Most notably when JGB went from out of the smaller clubs and venues to the bigger arenas the Dead played. Nice to see it wasn't as overplayed as some of the JGB warhorses. It was always nice to catch one.

I really like the one from 10/28/78, but I really like that whole show. I can see why Jer didn't play R&C regularly -- it's such a great song, but it's an effort to get it exactly right (the lyrics, the rhythm), so I can see why it was less of a live staple. I really enjoy the GD versions too, but almost as much for the crowd reaction! Smile

I agree this was better with JGB, but definitely still cool.
