Not sure whereís the best place to post this but this was the closest to topic I could find. (If this subjectís already been covered in the past, perhaps someone could post a link to the page).

I was wondering how people store their shows. I have everything burned to CDR but I know itís not a very reliable medium Ė no-one seems to know how long CDRs will last before they go kaput....Iíve seen estimates from 2 years to 100 years! I think DVDs are supposed to be a bit more reliable (azo dye?) and of course there are external HDs. But when I looked into purchasing a HD I couldnít settle on a brand to go for because I kept coming across reports of people losing all their data some months or years down the line (see this link for example:

I suppose Iíll just get a HD anyway and backup all the CDs onto it and hope for the best, but Iíd be interested if anyone has any comments/advice.

I've been in the I.T. business for a good few years, here's some nuggets of advice:

You cannot ever be sure of 100% reliability; you can, however, make it less likely to lose data.

Firstly, you must have at least 2 copies of any data.
Ideally, you want a third copy of the data in a different place.
Backing-up must be easy to do, otherwise you'll never do it.
A RAID system is not for backing up data, whatever you may read elsewhere.

The life of CD's, is well preserved, is not so bad; but if you 1000's of CD's hanging around you WILL lose data from them.

For me, the best and easiest solution is multiple hard drives, and to upgrade them every year or so. Since the storage and price of hard drives is always falling, the cost is small. A 1TB H/D will hold more than 1000 GD shows in lossless format!

One more thing - you should power up an unused hard-drive once a year just to keep it ticking over.

The problem of how you play from the hard drive is a different matter though Shocked

I have just started ma collection and for now what I do is to save the music in an external HD (2TB) and to save them ride away in the data DVD.

So, if the external HD dies I can take another one and put back the music from the DVD.

In theory you are suppoced to check the DVDs from time to time.

If something happens ..... that's life Very Happy after all its just mp3 ..... so you will have the opportunity to feel again the excitment of starting a new GD collection!
