I am fascinated by all of you my friends for your knowledge of the sources is vast as the knowledge of the ancient scriptures by St. Augustine.

My request for suggestions of a "must have"/"smoking" show as per this rules:

1) it must be at the LMA;
2) it has to be a AUD only show with no available SDB/Matrix, and
3) it has to be great

The point is to "catch" some great shows that can pass through your fingers and not be noticed just becouse it is not a SDB od Matrix.

Just a couple that come to mind...

11/22/68 - Columbus. Below-average sound quality, but very hot show and very listenable if you give it a chance.

12/16/78 - Nashville. Killer Sugaree and Scarlet> Fire from heaven. SQ is very good.

11/8/70 - Capitol Theater, Portchester, NY - We are forever indebted to Ken and Judy Lee for recording these historic shows. The whole run is outstanding.

9/29/69 -- a short (40 min) segment of this small club show is all that's known to exist, but if you like 69, it's a ferocious one.

Most of the 1970 Capitol Theater shows exist as auds recorded by an usher who worked during the shows. They're all essential shows from 1970, but 6/24 is my personal favorite.

There aren't a lot of great quality fall 72 recordings, since the band's main recording gear was stolen. Some are aud only -- 11/13/72 is one that was partially recorded by Bear. It has one of the best Dark Stars of the year, which is saying a lot, and it sounds great.

There's also this show, 5/8/77, that people seem to dig, but I dunno. There may be a sbd for this?

5/3/79 is AUD only and sounds fantastic. Good setlist, too. I can't vouch for the X-factor, though. Listen to it and report back. I would listen to it right now, but another bizarre quest has taken hold of me.... details to be revealed later.

Of course, here is a list of shows where the AUD is better than the SBD...

Nice list. I see 6/9/91 FOB there, which we listened to the other day. A killer audience recording that blows away the board from that show.

I know about that, and I go often there to check up!

I wanted to see if there are greate shows with AUD source ONLY, I think that the added value of this shows (regardles of the sound quality) is that they will probably never be released, and the fact that there are no sdbs or Matrix makes them more vulnarable to be passed by or worst .... forgotten!

That's why I started this theread, so the other therad is important as a "sound quality" review, whilst here I wanted to concentrate more to the rare (one source) aud shows which are greate!!!

For me the AUD has to be more than just listenable, regardless of historical importance. A bad AUD is painful and not even worthy of a stream IMO. Great suggestions. Stick with those.

I'm not sure if they unearthed the SBD, but
8/6/71 AUD is a MUST HAVE CLASSIC

7/1/73 - AUD only, very heavy and psychedelic.

9/6/80 monster show

3/9/81

4/22/83 and 4/23/83

4/13 4/14 & 4/16/84

10/15/84

8/6/71 did finally surface on sbd, but the aud is the way to go. Sound and playing qualities aside, there are a couple amusing ironies that always get me about 8/6: Bobby's advice to the tapers that they need to move back to get better sound is actually directed at a different set of tapers (ie, not the tapers mastering the recording we have), who move back to where our tapers were located -- who just so happen to be the same tapers who are busted with great fanfare by Phil on 12/31/70!

Wonder why they had a change of heart on 8/6... Smile

You should also check out the following:

(reverse order chronologically and sound quality; available from usual sources)

1969-04-15 at the Music Box, typcial setlist for the period, 20 min Dark Star (but only a short Eleven) and back in the days when China Cat didn't lead into Rider but here into Doin' That Rag

1968-03-30 at Carousel aka Winterland, good selection here too with a number of extended jams

1968-03-03 impromptu flatbed truck performance in Haight Street, at least two versions exist, one with more songs and announcements, etc; certainly listenable not just historic (though my mother was in labour with me at the time!) and - no pun intended - one of the dozen or so renditions of Born Cross-Eyed.

Theres a SB of this show out there, but AUD from Winterland 6/17/75 blows it away. I love the taper talk before Me And My Uncle. "Could you slide that back?"..."No i cant slide it back! There's no room behind me!", along with people fighting for the band to play either Me and My Uncle or Cosmic Charlie. Close your eyes and you can really feel youself in winterland. The second set is only decent in my book but this has to be one of my favorite first sets ever.

11/5/79 is another great AUD
