Which do you prefer?

I love:
The Night They Tore Ole Dixie Down
He Ain't Give You None
Tangled Up In Blue
Dear Prudence
Mystery Train (good call Gopher, I had initially forgotten this)

All covers interestingly (of course, the majority of the JGB songs were covers, and of the Garcia pieces, I think most were better with the GD)...

And, an original:
Mission in the Rain

my top 3 JGB songs are Mission in the rain, Simple twist of fate, That lucky old sun.

I've gone with a kinder avatar, the first one was for skobud, when he proved himself as negative as the worst posters at the archive. There are plenty of VERY good threads here and there, and posters who stay above the fray. Though the political threads get nasty, too many commies there-hahaha Twisted Evil

Just gotta poke around and you'll see

In defense of skobud, who is generally a very calming sort here... I think he was pissed about the people who were slamming this place at LMA. Not to speak for him, but I think he just had enough. If you check out his other posts here... he has been a great contributor. You have seen it yourself, a simple mention of LSP by anyone who is a member here leads to lashings from several LMA folks, you not being one of them.

I actually kind of liked your other avatar, though aggressive.

Here's mine:

    Positively 4th Street
    The Harder They Come
    Tough Mama
    Cucumber Slumber

I really love John Khan's bass playing and Ozzie Ahler's keyboards (circa 1979 - 1980'ish).
I thought Ozzie and Jerry had a great chemistry together.

Agreed 11/25/83 Cleveland listened to that last night Shocked

Check out 8/13/84 Club Casino, NH

A little problem I have with some of the 82-84 shows is the fact that Jerry sometimes would short the sets. 3 and 4 song sets!!! This would sometimes lead feeling cheated.

That being said, I absoulutly love these sets because they shred. I mean we listen to JGB to see Jerry shred, and those beefy mid 80's workouts were the Hungry Man dinners of jamdom!

This Rhapsody is pretty much a " Sorry for cutting it short" rare ENCORE!!!

The whole second set was four songs, two of them not even clocking in at 8 mins.

Sugaree {17:31}
Run for the Roses{ 5:21}
Get Out of My Life Woman{12:15}
Midnight Moonlight{7:29]
Encore:
Rhapsody in Red {14:53}

I will throw in a couple of quite different ones - Georgia on My Mind and Wicked Messenger.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Mississippi Moon. Love the way he sings this one.

I second the prior mention of Going, Going, Gone. Can't get enough of this from 5/22/75.

I love Don't Let Go.

I like the part where he sings...Ooh we! This feeling's killing me. Aw shucks! I wouldn't stop for a million bucks...

I don't think anyone has mentioned Dreadful Wind and Rain, so eerie.

I love Garcia Grisman, Shady Grove, Whisky in a Jar, Two Soldiers...oh and I like Not for Kids only, I like Arkansas Traveler. I laugh out loud every time I hear it. Your corn looks awful little and yeller...I planted the little yeller kind! Cracks me up!

My problem is that the more I think about it I realize that I don't have a favorite, I like it all, how could I like Garcia Grisman more that Garcia Saunders? I do love David Grisman, though. Good ol' DAWG.

Garcia/Saunders was a whole other bag of tricks. Blues For The Rainforest is frackin amazing album. The real question that I have is JGB a tribute band to Garcia/Saunders? I just opened up a whole can of worms with that statement. I have noticed late era JGB is very close to Saunders work with Jerry. In the end I love it all, just prefer Saunders or Wales on keys over Melvin.

I dunno man, I like Melvin a lot. I'm not saying he's better than Merle Saunders or anything like that but I like Melvin a lot in early 90s JGB (I'm thinking 91')

Melvin on songs like Don't Let Go can be amazing. Melvin isn't bad or anything. I am sure I made it sound like I thought that. Honestly, Melvin can be a very pleasing keyboardist many shows. I just don't think Garcia was as excited to play by the time Melvin came around.

Of course 'Russian Lullaby' must get a mention. Jerry's playing on this reminds me a lot of Django Rheinhardt.

No way man, Jerry loved Melvin. Listen to some of those late 80's Early 90's JGB. They were tearing it up. Melvin could wail and it was always fun watching Jerry give him the nod from across the stage to take an extra solo!

Try some Lucky Old Suns for some good Melvin work.

I have listened to a lot of Melvin shows. Actually, I have seen Melvin's JGB back in 99. Great show. I just meant that Garcia was autopilot mode during Melvin's tenure. It seemed like that to me past maybe 93. Granted he played like that in the Dead as well. Melvin is now playing with Kimock in Crazy Engine. Melvin just keeps getting better with age in my opinion. Also, I want to say my opinion changes on a dime. Depends mainly on what I am listenin to at the time.

Just heard a rare one that I absolutely cannot stop playing - "Down Around Biloxi"
Beautiful lyrics by Jesse Winchester. Well sung and played. According to the Jerry site, he only sang this three times with two of them being 6/30/72 and 1/25/73, which are the two I have heard. Strongly recommended.

Tangled up in Blue
Dear Prudence
both very high on all time lists from the fat man

also love some of the After Midnight> Elanor Rigby Jam> After Midnights
that were done in the Feb-Mar 1980 era, since I discovered them a deacde ago (?) I have wondered why Rigby never made it into he rotation, in my opinion maybe some of jerry's fastest licks

Maybe it was the band line up. After March 80 there was a different drummer. Perhaps he couldn't get it down for some odd reason. I highly doubt it but you never know.

Can't get enough of Tough Mama and Positively 4th Street lately, specifically versions from 10/31/75....Is that Jerry's or Nicky's band? Amazing!
Such difficult songs to sing, yet Jerry's able to keep the hiccups to a minimum.
