Comment: Transferred and mastered by T. Wiley. Great sounding SBD, with Phil popping in the mid-to-upper registers. Unless you prefer AUDs, this is the best version to get.

Comments: Recorded by Mike Rice. Full sound, only slightly lacking in the treble range. The crowd is like the seventh player. An enjoyable mix. Other AUDs of this show have better high end, but poorer low end and a less exciting audience component.

Other 10/8/84 AUDs at the Archive as of Sep. 8, 2008: 77834, 91376, 94302, 94303.

Comments: Very good, but patched in some unfortunate spots (opening of Jack Straw... ouch).
Overall, this is the best version to get, but the AUD recommended below gives it a run for its money.

Comments: Recorded by Steve Rolf, transferred and mastered by Charlie Miller. Very "live" sounding recording; crisp, with good bass.

Comments: Recorded and transferred Andrew F. Nice FOB recording with expert patching. Of the six recordings available, this is the only one with a smooth transition from PITB into drums.

Comments: The SBD portions of this version are good, but nearly 40% of this SBD is patched with AUD. There are 4 separate patches, each of which is a hard bump, and the last patch encompasses the last full hour of the show (the patches are from

Comments: This is a Oade recording . Very clean recording with good dynamic range. This is an excellent alternative to the SBD since there are no jarring patches and the best part of the show (UJB thru Good Love) is in better quality.

Other 10/12/84 AUDs at the Archive as of Sep. 14, 2008: 356, 8795, 17412, 20022, 30192, 77979 and 85219.

Comments: Recorded By Rick Pauline. Transfer and mastering by Charlie Miller. Better sounding than any other version, but with a few minutes of drums missing. Crowd is unobtrusive. Other versions are either missing even more of the drums/space or they have lousy sound.

Other 10/14/84 AUDs at the Archive as of Sep. 15, 2008: 3592, 77477, 77990, and 78934.

Comments: Recordist and lineage unknown. This is a tough call; all four sound good. But this recording has a more open sound that puts my head in the room; it also is the most complete with about three more minutes of drums captured than the others. All four recordings, though, are missing most of the drum segment.

Other 10/15/84 AUDs at the Archive as of Sep. 15, 2008: 22022, 79023 and 91434.

Brendon Byrne Arena, East Rutherford, NJ on 1984-10-17

Set 2 Help On The Way -> Slipknot! -> Franklin's Tower, Man Smart (Woman Smarter), Terrapin Station -> Jam -> Drums ->
-> Space -> The Other One -> Truckin' -> Stella Blue -> Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad
Encore: Brokedown Palace

Comments: Transferred and Edited By Charlie Miller. Excellent SBD, flawed only by lacking the last minute or so of the jam after Terrapin and the entire drum segment. In spite of the missing material, this is the version to get, but getting the AUD is suggested for the sake of completion.

Other 10/17/84 SBDs at the Archive as of Sep. 16, 2008: 21783. Note: this is just the 2nd set and comes from the same source files (with identical timings and missing material) as the C. Miller version cited above.

Comments: Recorded by "Willy?" (the text file is ambiguous). This is is the best of the AUDs: good sound, the complete show, and well edited.

Other 10/17/84 AUDs at the Archive as of Sep. 16, 2008: 27975 and 78015.

Brendon Byrne Arena, East Rutherford, NJ on 1984-10-18

Comments: Transferred by MattMan. Good SBD with strong bass. This SBD really captures the "room" (an inflatable stadium) in a weird way, even though it doesn't have an audience feed; there's an airiness to it that brings it all back Very Happy The bad news, though, is that 6 minutes of drums are missing. In spite of the missing drums, this is the best version to get.

Best AUD (of two up at the Internet Archive):

Comments: Recorded by Bruce Fried ; transferred and mastered by Mike Lai. A merely OK recording with a minute of missing drums plus a tape flip between Esau and Bird Song. Much better sound, though, than the other AUD. But get the SBD.

Other 10/20/84 AUDS at the Archive as of Sep. 16, 2008: 33341. (NB: This recording is the worst sounding but most complete.)

So.... Who's reviewing the following nine West Coast shows that wrap up 1984? Very Happy

Just a quick post to push this puppy up into everyone's radar.

Jump in and review a tour, guys, everybody benefits. I found upgrades for six of the 11 shows in the tour. It was well worth the effort.

Very nice work here. Augusta the 12 was my first show!!! Not a bad way to break in huh? Anyway really good reviews of the entire tour and one that always has held a little special place for me. I like 84 as a whole despite some burps, and now I want explore further into this tour a little more. Listened to some of the Charlotte show from the tapers section, and there have been praises of that show on another board so naturally I'm going to have to listen in for the rest. Again, thanks for the effort and nice work.

great offering on a neglected period zephyr. It won't change worlds, but an easy access list like this will probably make a nice helping of converts for fall 84. Gems in every direction. Like the j straw, ramble on rose, & shakedown from 10/20, not my fav straw, but I get the hype for sure. SBDs that have this slight AUD vibe are the best, as soon as I read your note I jumped on it and totally agree. Nice pick!

fwiw, the 10/20 straw is viscious. For my ears though, it gets lost in its own speed with plenty of unachieving notes. For my money 9/14/91 is the one. The solo is so precise, it's one of those jerry solos that sounds like he'd been rehearsing it note for note for months. So focused, no wasted notes etc...

I'm glad you find it useful. Maybe someday we'll review EVERYTHING. Maybe not. I'll check out the Jack Straw from '94. Thanks.

What do you think about this source? I think it wasn't available at the Archive when you did your review. I came across it from Tetzeli's list of awesome AUDs.

Yes, it was: it is 91434, and was awarded "also-ran" status. Note that this posting is another classic example of why I originally started up Speedingarrow: All the tracks from Scarlet B's onward are mislabeled as a result of Baby Blue getting stuffed between the first and second sets. Laughing

Shit, my memory span is really short. Like, I looked at the numbers at the bottom of your 10/15 post... then I clicked to another page to see what number Tetzeli said was best... and I forgot it that quickly.

Man... so now, the ultimate question.
Who is right? Zephyr? Or Bill Tetzeli?
